Now with Hornacek talking about how important it is to not only have a good backup PG but also a 3rd PG on the roster (I fully agree), I just can't believe that we chose not to get involved in the latter part of this draft somehow/someway for one of those PGs. I mean, what, we get Derrick Rose and everything's OK at that position now? Hardly.. Attractive as he may be in several ways, his injury history still scares the piss outta me, low risk trade or not. I mean we're trying to win this year now, right? You take on a player with his injury history, it's more important than ever that you look to acquire more capable depth behind him. Yeah, FA is one option but with the overly-inflated contracts that almost every FA is likely to get now, that can't possibly be the only solution. At least Jeff H. knows this. I gotta believe if they asked Jeff for input on this draft, he would've said with our limited resources, go get me one of these young PGs projected to go late..So what's the story here -- why no move for a late 2nd round/UDFA PG? As usual, little to no communication from the front office so all we have is speculation: (1) did Dolan reject the idea because the pick would've cost too much money? Ok, what's the solution then, Jimmy? Throw $10mm/year at DJ Augustin?? (2) We didn't have the money to use because we blew some of it in the KOQ acquisition? Well that sucks but if that's the case, tell us!!! Here we were believing these reports from "sources" saying we were looking to trade for/buy a pick. How, if we didn't have enough money to? (3) Another one of my favorites--Phil grabbed 2nd rounders in the last couple of drafts. OK, and? Does that somehow give him a pass to no longer be aggressive now? We needed a move like that now more than ever. Look at this roster -- where's the depth?!? And again, you can't tell me FA, with all these absurdly inflated signings that are about to start taking place was their solution all along.. Whatever, but then we had chances after the draft and chose not to be aggressive. Hey man, that's what it looks like to me, but some will say 'well, these UDFAs can make up their own minds--maybe they didn't want to come here.' I don't buy that -- why'd the Knicks even bother working out some of these guys then (not sure about GP2 but I know we worked out Barber and Ferrell)? Not only that--this team just upgraded the head coach spot with a bright/well-known name (who values and has had success with young PGs btw), got Derrick Rose, already have Melo/KP and have Phil Jackson at the top. Now we're all hoping that mix can attract a major FA, but you mean to tell me that's not good enough to attract an UDFA??? What UDFA is turning us down for a potential backup PG spot and potentially decent PT? What agent is telling his UDFA client the Knicks aren't a good choice (on paper now with Rose, there's a chance to be successful with the top-heavy star talent in place AND there's a chance for playing time behind Rose as that spot's wide open right now. Plus Rose could pull up lame at any time which would open up more PT)? What agent is telling Phil Jackson, 'no thanks, Phil. My guy's gonna pass' (that's IF he was even aggressive in reaching out to these players--was he?? I have SEVERE doubts here--don't you think we would've heard something, even in a failed attempt?). And then it's tough to fathom that we didn't like any of these guys enough to reach out and make an offer. If you're Phil/Gaines, how the hell do you value the decidedly mediocre Langston Galloway or the troubled/inconsistent/injured Tony Wroten (the first is a FA that I wouldn't bring back; the latter, we already severed ties with) but then have zero interest in a Cat Barber, Gary Payton II or Yogi Ferrell? All 3 of those guys have qualities we should've been interested in. I mean, really?? Hey, I know we can still sign any of these guys even though they're on someone else's SL team but still man, why not be aggressive and try to get them in here learning this system asap if they liked them (plus I would think our chances get a little lower now--you figure any team that signs a guy for their own SL and is in constant contact with him will have first crack at him)? And I know full well we didn't have a pick going in and our chances to do much of anything were already limited but I mean we took the time and effort to work out multiple players from this draft -- who did we like and what the hell was the plan exactly? Can't tell me the plan all along was to grab Ron Baker for SL after it was all over (even though that kid does look promising enough--not trying to take anything away from him or the Knicks. Nice move, but we really needed PG depth too, I think more so)...Didn't have the money for a pick/Jimmy didn't want to spend the money, OK, but there were DAMN GOOD choices for a PG after the draft was over -- 3 of the 6 PGs I really liked for us went undrafted. How is it we're not gonna be watching any of them in SL now? The need is there and the money to retool in FA is gonna be an absolute joke. Opportunity completely lost here imo to pick up a quality/young/cheap PG that we could've groomed into something. Heck, all 3 of these undrafted PGs I mentioned could play in the NBA right now, weaknesses and all. I take any one of them over Langston Galloway right now without even thinking twice about it. just trust me when i tell you that you (Finestrg) spend more time and energy at UDFA that the knicks upper management. yes they want to keep draft picks but for the immediate future theyre looking for NAMES - smart vets that fit their philosophy. theyre not trying to hear about UFDAs
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better
