I'd say its a good trade for us very short term. He is a free agent but I don't think he is enough to elevate the team short term.
Thing is we dont' really know why Ropez is falling off a bit and it would be no secret to bulls to why we'd want to move him just Six weeks into a new season. It also does not bode well to displace new free agents so fast unless its discussed at signing. Free agents would not find that appealing.
THe only starphuch trade I would not mind is being liberated from trying to build around Melo and focus on a longer term goal which my prize would be Winslow in Miami who is in more of a win now mode anyway. This comes at a price and to me a Melo/Calderon for Winslow and Dragic gives me enough to keep us respectable (not tank city) while building a core. I don't think this puts us in the playoffs this year but helps Miami and maybe if Wade can come off his price he can see they might have a 2 year window with that team with Whiteside.
Any trade with Clippers or Lakers Would be centric on picks and prospects and would likely involve a third party.
I have complete confidence that Melo and PHil have laid out scenarios where Melo could be traded and both be happy with the outcome. This even before he resigned with us. There were certain financial realities in place for both to make that deal. Phil has tickets to sell and a legacy to build while Melo wants a big cosmopolitan market to be in. La La's make up line company is based in Miami and Melo's soccer team in Pueto Rico. The gateway latin financial makeup of Miami and their business's are compatable with living in that city. Thus I conclude he COULD be amicable to playing there and them being a contender. At the same time the faster KP can be Dolans "Star" the better the team/ticket sales, but also the better we can perhaps trade Melo for value and have a higher long term ceiling. In three years Winslow is 23 years old while Melo is 34. No guarantee Winslow is a star, but its why Dragic and perhaps a draft pick our way is in return.
Just thinking it thru. Personally I prefer Melo stay and the team succeed with him but I can't see this team getting the infusion of talent in the short run with him unless there are free agent possibilities that desire to play with KP and Melo. With no pick this year and no high potential Euro's stashed (Henrangomez???) I don't see big upside for next year.
But lets not assume because I/We don't see means it can't happen.
