Melo is not the kind of player to make others better. At some point we have to give up on the notion that at 31 he can become that player. If he wasn't so grossly overpaid we'd have a better shot at bringing in that kind of player. Hopefully who ever we draft this year becomes that player. Hopefully we don't trade anymore lottery picks for "quick fixes"

You mean how about we disregard the topic and turn this into a bash melo thread? Do we really have to...

The original post is about Melo and Melo is the reason for this post

The original post is about melo AND cp3 which is the reason you requested to forget about him the post I quoted. Melo was the reason it was posted but the discussion is more so about Paul.

Where you been? People are constantly $hitting on Paul, Harden, George & Blake in a desperate attempt to pump up Melo. Do I have to find the threads from the past 3yrs?

I've been here. Guys from both the pro and anti melo camp bring up those players and they've both done it either initially or in response to the other camp. Its not always about propping melo up. You've bashed him enough to know it goes both ways.

it certainly goes both ways.

Both sides have some really silly extremists.

I can only think of 1 or 2 anti-Melo extremists and one is no longer with us. I've seen far more $hit on other more successful players to try to pump up Melo

well of course being that the pro melo side has gotten obliterated over the last couple of years.

many of the extreme melo apologists have started to distance themselves from him (and rightfully so, he has not helped them at all).

No they haven't gone anywhere as evident by this thread. They rather go down with the ship. I root for the uniform more than I root for any particular player. I'm certainly not going to root for a primadonna like Melo over the Knicks

I am a Melo fan, but am a knicks fan first and foremost. If Melo left tomorrow, i would not be concerned one bit. I don't defend his lack of playoff success, or his struggles as a passer and defender. He's a great scorer, one of the best. He's also a star in this league. That being said, as a Knick, he is actually more criticized than most other stars, Paul included. I think people focus way too much on pro-Melo or anti-Melo. It's either one extreme or the other, never in between. I would consider myself pro-Melo because i think he's a great player and we benefit from him, however i am not blind to the criticism that is warranted, which plenty of it is. I know you weren't referring to me, but obviously as the thread creator, i have to take some responsibility knowing this thread would bait people into a Melo conversation.

fair take ... and I am sure you understand why he gets a beating by many. There is logic to it.

I was mostly pro melo and held out hope until he signed this contract and to top that off, he played like sh1t this season and refused to pass.

Then that Joke with the all star game? C'mon ... any other player would get absolutely crushed for all this crap.

He is not held to a higher standard, he is held to a much lower standard by fans who are desperate for a savior.

I absolutely do, and the criticism is all warranted. What i disagree with is a few folks severely underrating him to make a point. Saying he belongs as a 6th man or whatever is just an insult to basketball minds. He is what he is, a flawed star. Hopefully we can find the right combination of players to play alongside him and get this team competitive again.

yeah ... thats also a joke.

some people hate him and can't see past that.

I don't hate him at all. I hate certain attributes of his game.

If he could just pass more and shoot less/smarter, he would be a great offensive player.

Choosing to chuck instead of pass is all on him. No excuses! Look at Houston, they are enabling crappy players and they are coming through. If Melo was on that team and taking 35 shots a game, his apologist would be asking

"well who should he pass to, they all stink"

Well .... they partly all stink because you won't pass them the ball.

Look at all these players who are shining away from the knicks.

Yeah, playing alongside 2 and 3 all stars in their proper roles and not trying to decipher the triangle with a clueless coach...That's a level playing field...

The triangle is suppose to make it easier for star players to score. Instead of working hard to isolate. Unfortunately Melo is not in that league. He doesn't have the IQ and is not a 2-way player by he is paid like one. This is why Melo had such a hard time sticking with he triangle and downright stop trying and wound up doing his own thing again.

don't try to put any blame on him.

Before you know it, someone will post some articles about how great Melo plays in the playoffs when all evidence says otherwise.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

The more the decision making is taken out of Melo's hands the better we will be. And Melo's scoring output will be more effective instead of multiple empty 25pts on 10-30 playoff performances

How did the triangle do with just Kobe???? Or when has the triangle worked without PJax in the NBA Or When has the triangle worked without a defensive stud on the front line and two all stars...

Fine because Kobe played defense and like Michael understood the value of trusting teammates in crunch time

I was referring to the Gasol championship team but to answer your question. Kobe won 37 games playing alongside Smush Fuckin Parker. 37 wins! We won 17 this year and Melo's ex-teammates are succeeding for their teams in playoffs . That is the difference right there between Volume Scorer Melo and 2-way Kobe

That's where things get a little muddy. They aren't succeeding just because they are no longer playing with Melo. There are so many factors that play into their current success that get conveniently ignored by some.

yeah ... there are other factors too. But Melo is the biggest one and its probably our fault since we were a bit fooled and overrated him.

Now at least most agree that he should be a #2 and pass the ball a lot more.

Amare was a black hole bonehead that did not help either.

As of now, the Melo signing looks absolutely terrible and (...let me put on my Nixluva suit...) Phil is not happy!

We are very close to an era where Melo's contract is not overpaying, it will not prevent us from adding talent the next 2-3 years. I personally don't think he's overpaid, because i think a player is worth their market value. His market value is a max contract. But fortunately his max will not be the max next year for a lot of players, so there will be flexibility.

You know what's crazy is that the Clippers won one game without Paul and another largely because Austin Rivers took over the game. How odd is that when Paul put up all time great numbers?

I like Paul's game, I don't like some of his on court antics, and the only problem I have is him letting Jason Terry guard him in the 4th ate of game 6. That's pretty much it.

Come on man, they won 34 games and had Odom and Butler, both all-star caliber players far better than anyone on the knicks. Kobe has always played with talent, but never won without a superstar big man alongside him.

that is the Jeremy Lin argument ... sh1t happens sometimes when the star goes down. Other players step up when given a chance.

whats the point of all this?

Are we trying to compare Melo to Kobe? Kobe is obviously the much better player but he has his own flaws and was also a super chucker.

I don't agree that he is the biggest but I am with you on everything else.

as long as he continues to not move the ball and dribble it into the ground and chuck instead of pass, his teammates will mostly look terrible.

He needs to create to pass sometimes instead of always looking to create his own shot.

If his shot is off, the team is screwed! He can't make up for it like other top tier star.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

You can't compare Melo to Kobe.

When Kobe doesn't have talent he turns into arguably the most selfish player in the game.

Shaq is likely one of the 10 greatest players ever to play the game. Can someone please tell me when Melo played next to someone that was averaging 27pts 12rbs 3ass 2blks every year?

The guy had Odom, Gasol and Bynum.

You took MJ off the Bulls they almost went to the coference finals. Pippen was a top 30 player all-time.

Let's see what happens when we give the guy one All-Star player before trashing him.

At what point is Chris Paul criticized for lack of success?
