i know you are the king of optimism which is fine but that was a totally different situation for the spurs. Again nobody is saying we are doomed but you just gotta be realistic too

For real. The Spurs tank season happened in 96-97; before that season the last time they finished below .500 was 88-89 and they finished with fewer than 50 wins only twice. David Robinson was only two years removed from winning league MVP. They were looking to add a lottery pick to a team that had finished with 59 and 62 wins each of the previous two seasons.

The Answer Man Misses Charles Smith, Who Was Also in San Antonio

Q. nixluva - Is this what it was like for Spurs fans when they tanked and got Duncan?

A. Nope

That 20 win Spurs team included Avery Johnson, Vinny Del Negro, Sean Elliott, Will Perdue, Vernon Maxwell, Dominique Wilkins and Monty Williams. None of them would be considered D-League talent.

Jim has made some mistakes in the past, no doubt, but he's really turned things around in recent years. The results just aren't visible to fans yet. We really do need to give Phil enough time to do his job and turn things around. However, I firmly believe that process has already begun and we'll begin seeing improvements next year.

StraightShot - Of course there will be improvements. We are the worst team in the entire league. We have won 10 games. There is no place to go but up.

The Celtics and Sixers have multiple quality selections in the first round. The Wizards, Cavs and Bulls are high quality teams with a clear sense of who they are. The Raptors and Bucks are rising. The question is whether any so-called "improvement" will be enough for our expansion team to leapfrog a significant number of teams in the Eastern Conference?

The game is not played in a vacuum.

How about a different example. The Nuggets won 27 and then 17 prior to getting Melo in the draft. They won 26 more games and made the playoffs with Melo in his rookie year.

Exactly. The improvements have begun at the organizational level, and Jim has made clear that nothing less than excellence will suffice. He wants to reward loyal knick fans with a winning team. So we need to be patient and give the new GM time to continue this process. It's going to be an amazing journey.

Dolan has not ruined anything. He is fighting to improve this franchise.

they were tied for the worst record but the cavs won the lottery. They also were really bad the previous season but I guess that doesn't fit the agenda.

StraightShot - patience?

Please define "patience" and the benchmarks (in measurable terms) that Jim has set for the teams performance.

Uncle Phil has a five year $60M contract. If he stays the duration, he will be 75 years old. You really think he wants to grind at that age?

CrushALot - no agenda. We are the worst team in the NBA. Before making any comparisons, please let that sink in a moment.

Phil's an amazing guy. He has a great depth of spirituality and he speaks a language the players understand. Jim has empowered Phil to take the basketball operations to a new and deeper level. so, yes I absolutely believe Phil will stay for his entire contract, and we'll have a championship team before he leaves.

I didn't say the Knicks weren't the worst team. I am very aware of how bad this team is. What I did provide was a second example of a team that was the worst team had a 26 game turn around after adding a lottery pick.

If the New York Knicks are NBA Champions within five years, Phil Jackson will have a bust on Mount Rushmore.

StraightShot - how long have you been on the payroll?

Lol. I'm not on the payroll. I just want to get out the good news that they're turning this thing around. Loyal fans who hang in there this year will be well rewarded in coming years.
