Despite never really liking Melo's game all that much I hoped the Amare/Melo/Chandler imitation Big 3 Lite scheme would work or at least be competitive against the Heat and the other top Eastern conference teams (lets be honest, there aren't many).
What's clear now is the experiment, strategy, whatever you call it was a failure for a myriad of reasons. It's my opinion that the franchise is better off letting Melo walk. He's not young anymore and paying guys in the their 30's almost usually goes bad a year or two before you think it will. Pretty much always, actually. Add to that that Melo isn't the type of player who anchors a team. You can build with him, sure, but you're going to need some strong personalities or an alpha dog clearly better than him. We have no chance of doing that anytime soon.
So, yeah, whatever! If Melo walks we'll be even worse than last year but we have our pick. We have our other huge contracts expiring after only one more season. It's time to see what Phil and Fisher can do. Do I wish the Knicks had been better the past couple years? Of course, but the era was a failure. Let's move on. Im not going to shed tears and certainly ain't gonna be joining Melo-optout-anonymous though I will never deny I hoped for the best while the guy was here. Adieu, dude.
Let's get that top pick in 2015.
