However, even a 4 year deal is by no stretch a franchise killing blow. If he continues his level of play we're getting him at a decent price and he would be an attractive piece for a trade down the line. Heck, even at $6.5 per year that's only around $2.75 more than we had committed to Novak.

Even on a 4 year deal we have a ton of cap space down the line.

Im starting to believe the other guys saying we wont have cap space this was just the first 1 to drop. Melo isnt going anywhere he counts as 20 million , Felton and JR are 10, Hardaway option picked up "which is fine cheap deal", Shumpert wil get a deal worth 6-8 million, bam we are up to 40 million space for 1 max with 10 more roster spots to fill. Knicks are fing stupid, really stupid, its hard to be a fan when the team constantly over pays. Put Grunwald in a room with Jerry Reese of the Giants. Reese sets a value and if a FA goes over he walks away. For once I would like to see the Knicks walk away from a contract or a trade instead of being forced onto to their knees. Every damn time its unbelievable. It doesnt matter who the GM is either.

He signed for less than he could have got last season, so we still owe him for that. Likely the bucks offered him a 4yr deal and he decided he'd rather stay with us- its not a case of the market drying up.

We all knew he was getting a max length deal, seems like you just started this 'oh hope it's 2 years' nonsense so you could complain more when the inevitable happened.

Then u walk away and thank JR for his contribution why he was in NY and to enjoy playing for the Bucks. He likes big backsides lots of them in Mil. There is no differeance to the Knicks title hopes with or without JR the best chance of the Knicks winning is the cap space in 2015 and thats going to disappear real quick

An avg of $6 mil/yr for 4 years is a very fair deal for JR. He can put a player option in for year 3 if he wants too. Then we possibly can re-sign him for a higher amt if he has played well. But first sign some top Free agents.

To tank for 2 years with the hope of signing Wiggins or signing top free agents just isn't sound strategy. Nor will it happen. We are still going for a championship this year. And minimum goal is to beat the Nyets.

lets be realistic, he has flaws (mainly attitude, mental, and off the court issues) but he is much more talented than the 7m range players which is getting payed higher than him
Redick and Kevin Martin are HORRIBLE DEFENDERS and has to be the weakest defender on the court in order to be a fit for the team

Can smell Chris Smith coming along to make up the difference

Would be a flexible contract as is Felton's. Teams with cap space would be more then willing to trade for Felton 1yrs 4mil left or Smith 2yrs 12mil left if we got commitments from Love and Irving and needed the extra space. Shump could possibly be swapped for first rder at the draft if it came down to it or used in a S&T with Felton. The flexibility is still there since these deals are cap friendly.

What is interesting is that JR hasn't even had a good shooting season with the Knicks. IF he gets his 3 ball back to where it used to be look out.

This guy has no market nobody wants him. 2 years 5 million take it or leave it. Are the Knicks just stupid once again they are bidding against themselves. That's justice.

Marc Berman ‏@NYPost_Berman 5m
Source saying J.R deal is completed with Smith accepting terms on 4-year, 24.7 M deal.

Berman also tweeted it.

There is no bidding against themselves with money they can only use on Smith. Also, he has a market, teams just might not be giving him way higher offers or only comparable offers. The years 2 or 4 does not really matter because unlike N0vak he will more than likely still have trade value because he would still be on a good deal.

This deal is very fair...but I hate it. JR isn't a winner. I hope he proves me wrong. He shows flashes every year but he has to commit.

Plus, this negates some of the reasoning for the Bargs deal. I guess it shows Woody and Grunwald think they can still put together a winner until 2015 free agency.

I think the Knicks just really want him. Hes Melos closest friend on the team, Woody LOVES him, and I remember reading somewhere that him and Dolan played golf together at some point.

And that is why I have no faith in this organization

I'm getting tired of this Melo guy too. Can't even shoot 50% and make teammates better.

Its starting to seem like neither of them are going anywhere (whether thats a good or bad thing remains to be seen).
