I have to say I have barely seen him play in years. He seems to be a shell of what he once was. But he was always a great rebounder and shotblocker.

I see one previous post and you claimed he was decent but very old ---- so why not go after the much younger guy that basically does the same role ?

I think because all of the money is locked up in Amare, Tyson and Melo. The Knicks can only offer vet minis. Maybe Kevin Wilson strikes gold again in Europe but the Knicks are in a bad spot. If you need a role player that you can count on in pressure situations you go for the vet winding down his career versus the summer league call up that has some nba experience and might have more upside. No guy under 25 worth much is signing for the vet mini. The Knicks have been very lucky finding guys for nothing, Lin, Prigs and Cope. Hopefully that happens again but I don't think you can expect or pass on a guy like Brand because a young fringe guy might fulfill his potential. Not at least if you have the Knicks cap situation.

Despite all the alarms from the media, the Knicks actually have a chance to be a better team than they were last year. I think Brand has a lot more left in the tank than Sheed or KT did, so you have to think it would be a better roster move than what we had last year. In fact I think that would continue the trend of adding more live bodies. So far we've replaced Novak and Camby with a younger and more talented player in Bargs. It almost seems to be assured that when they replace Kidd no matter who it is, that they'll be younger and more robust guard. We've also got our kids from the draft, T Jr. and CJ, who I think will be able to give us some useful minutes. At least more than White and Novak did. Brand just seems like a safe tho not spectacular move.

Sorry I mixed up threads. I posted in the thread about Hansbro. He is definitely high energy but not high intelligence. I watched him in Carolina too he is the same IQ level as cave trolls.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Is Brand better than Kenyon Martin at this point their career? Kenyon is a bit older, but more ferocious. But Brand seems more steady. It seems like its one or the other right?

Don't believe Brand will be telling his teammates to dress in black as if they were going to a funeral. If Kmart does come back I hope he leaves the high school stuff at home. And Martin was wondering why it took so long to get on a roster last season....

Kenyon Martin Says Knicks Will Bury the Celtics in Game 5The trash talk between Boston and New York is reaching epic levels, as the increasingly testy series shifts to a crucial fifth game. Knicks bruiser Kenyon Martin told his teammates after yesterday’s Game 4 defeat to prepare for a Celtics funeral. Per the NY Daily News: “[JR] Smith will be back Wednesday for Game 5 at the Garden. ‘I don’t care if Patrick Ewing comes back for them,’ Terry said. ‘We’re going to treat it like a Game 7.’ Terry had a right to talk big. He made all three of his shots in overtime, including a pull-up 3-pointer off a 2-on-1 break that broke an 88-88 tie with 1:32 left and gave the Celtics the lead for good. But his talk was also the talk of the Knicks’ post-game locker room. ‘The guy was mouthing off before the game,’ Kenyon Martin said. ‘He told me, ‘You’re not dancing at my funeral today.’ [...] ‘We’re ending it Wednesday,’ Martin said. He even made it a point to tell teammates what to wear when the Knicks look to win this series in five, then get ready for the winner of Indiana-Atlanta. ‘Wear black,’ he said. ‘Funeral colors.’”

I was glad when we signed Kmart and I wouldn't mind bringing him back if he can keep that stuff in check. Needs to let his game do the talking.

That dressing in black stuff is pretty commonplace in the playoffs and was only emphasized to create drama post-Boston tragedy by media dbags that wanted to dig into the "cocky" Knicks on the verge of a sweep. It had no impact on the game and is of no importance whatsoever. We did not lose two games because of some stupid change of clothing. Kmart was great last season, I'd love to have him back. When Kmart gets pumped up after a sweet block it gets me out of my seat as a fan and makes the game more fun, not everyone is a robot. It's not like he's getting t'ed up left and right and costing us games. He doesn't need to cut out anything, he saved us when Tysoft pulled a Houdini and peaced out halfway through the season.

Its not nearly as commonplace as you suggest and those that have done something similar in the past didn't make such a big production out of it like the Knicks did. The media knew in advance what was coming because some players couldn't stop talking. Not their fault for doing their job and reporting it. It was the Knicks fault for doing a victory lap before the series was over. Absolutely nothing admirable about talking a good game, posturing, and getting your hat handed to you. Showed that they weren't focused enough on getting the job done. Dressing in black and talking trash was a symptom of their lack of focus, not the root cause.

I want Kmart back. I want him to bring his energy and enthusiasm, but I want him to leave his juvenile antics at home. Stuff like that does more to fire up the other team than ours. More bulletin board material for them to use. Others ways to get the team fired up.

I have no idea why he wouldn't feel that way. Why overpay and dip into this MLE for a guy that won't play more than 20 mins a game backing up the 4/5 spots?? We could get a young guy (with a higher ceiling than a 35-year-old Brand possibly -- maybe we could uncover a gem with a younger big) at league minimum money....At the very least, we could get Earl Barron who's a good 3-4 years younger than Brand, for the vet minimum...Backup PG is where I'd look to use the $3.2m exception. I mean what if there's nothing to this Eric Bledsoe thing, Collison won't take the mini-ML, neither will Devin Harris and there winds up being a bidding war for Aaron Brooks in a week or 2? Shouldn't we want the mini-ML for that scenario? I hope they know what they're doing man...Speaking of Bledsoe, I'd love to pry that kid away from the Clippers. For that, I'd be prepared to S&T JR Smith AND even include Hardaway Jr. if need be.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brandel01.html

Brand's per 36 production has not really gone down. He only played 20 minutes per game last year but still averaged 7 points 6 rebounds and 1 and 1/3 blocks per game.

He's a much much better player than Bargnani and if we can get him without giving up any assets it'd be the best move made by Grunwald so far.

I'm not sure how anyone can like Bargnani at all, he's pretty much the exact opposite of what we need. We do not need a perimeter big who doesn't rebound and can't pass.

Rose is not the answer.

Ok, got that out of my system -- anyone recall Brand on Dallas this past season? How'd he look -- does he have anything left?? Also, this has got to be for the vet minimum, right? Do we dip into the mini-MLE for this guy? God, I hope not..

Because the young ones like Blatche stay with their teams for less or sign somewhere else for more.

Not talking about Blatche...I couldn't give a **** about that guy. I'm talking about adding a guy from SL, a young FA in their low 20s that fits the bill, someone cheap...Even Earl Barron is bigger and a good 3-4 yrs younger. I dunno man -- I hope I'm wrong and this guy has something left...They just love pushing the envelope with these guys that are on the downside...Get some more friggin' youngsters in here for Christ's sake..

Guys in their low 20's that are good are still on rookie deals. If they are 23 and they arent straight from the draft or Europe they probably arent any good. Any guy under 25 That can play isnt playing for the vet min.

When I'm wrong (i.e., never)

Uhm, Tyson Chandler(COUGH) Best Player on the Knicks (COUGH)

Sorry, had a tickle in my throat.

During that stretch he was. I never said he was for the full season.
If you go by the advanced stats, it's ambiguous who the best player was for the full season.
If you go by the eyeball test, you'll just see what you want to see.

Advanced stats are fine when comparing same types of players at the same position but they are very flawed if u think Chandler is a better basketball player overall then Carmelo. Individual skill is still the most important part of the game even though its a team sport. No metric in the world is going to tell me that Chandler is a better player then Melo.

How many players were connected to the Knicks last year that didnt sign here and were reported close about 10. I think most of these NBA beat writers have zero contacts.

Here is the problem I foresee with this team:
No continuity. The roster will be overhauled once again - the Knicks have had a dramatically different roster almost every season for years, especially with Melo.

How can we expect this team to gel? Sure out core 2 (plus Stat) are constant but our PG's are a revolving door, not to mention the flaws in our roster in general.

I love the Knicks but it has been really frustrating to be a fan with such poor decision making going in to our roster/future.

I hope we find a mix that works with Melo otherwise we have been wasting a lot of time.

Brand is clearly more valuable than Kmart since he has an array of moves in the post and can actually shoot. We were embarrassed by Indiana last yr cos both Tyson and Kmart gave you nothing offensively leading to Melo one on five ball. Adding Bargs is nice but not enough. Amare won't last so Brand will be invaluable as a post player. I want him and Kmart. Both guys along with Amare block shots unlike Tyson but I understand if Kmart bolts for more money.

Hopefully JR Smith bolts. It would be a great day in New York Knicks history
