No!

Would you rather Smith have hit the ones Kidd made?

Kidd made his fair share of big 3s. 2nd Nyets game comes to mind at the Garden. Doesnt minimize JRs 2 buzzer beaters

Stats suggest it had nothing to do with Woody and more so to do with Volume and Smith's natural progression to maturity. He's had better or say far more efficient yrs in Denver. I do feel he was more "timely for us and the stage on which he plays helps tremendously.

"Coach Woody and I talk so much, our communication is, not a day goes by where we don't have a conversation about the way I am playing or off the court or whatever it is. He's just such an influence as a coach, the most I've ever had."

- Earl Smith

There are a lot of things you can point to -- maturity, better shot selection, less late-night clubbing -- to explain J.R. Smith's renaissance in New York this season.

But, sometimes, an explanation is simpler than that. You might think NBA players are concerned solely about winning when they're on the court, or, more cynically, that they're worried mainly about their statistics.

As it turns out, in his five seasons with Denver, Smith sometimes had an agenda that was all his own (courtesy of Newsday):

"I just look at the game totally different," Smith said. "A lot of times, I was trying to score as many points as I could just because I knew that would [tick] George off and do certain things I knew would get him mad. But at the same time, I couldn't look at it that way because I wasn't winning that situation, anyway, which I didn't."

It all makes sense now!

The step-back 3-pointer over two defenders, the permanent green light he gave himself, regardless of the situation in the game ... he was just trolling George Karl!

In contrast, in the same article, Smith's dad called his son's relationship with Mike Woodson a "friend-father-player" one. Woodson has given Smith more slack when it comes to his decision-making on offense, while Smith has returned the favor by doing what the coaching staff wants and trying hard on defense.

As a result, Smith is having the best season of his career, with career highs in points, rebounds, assists and minutes played.

In his ninth season in the NBA, he's finally becoming the player everyone knew he could be. You might wonder, why did it take him so long to figure it out? Well, let's just ask him:

Smith takes some responsibility for what happened with his other coaches. He said he could have done things differently and been who they wanted him to be, but added, "That's just not me."

So in other words he grew up on "his terms" pretty much what I said earlier....

EXACTLY, he is trying to get a contract now, so he is playing the right way.. on his terms... now how long that will last, is the question.... and really, that is not cool...

very good post bonn... again PPG seems to weigh heavily with many posters, regardless of shooting % and other factors that make up a complete ball player...

yes, he was, i sat behind that hawks bench many games.. He tried to be that figure with josh, he used to get on josh smith repeatedly.... they used to verbal spar in the media, on the court.... Josh didn't like woody's constant use of iso joe.. Josh made reference that many times... believe me, woody tried to no avail with josh..

I never made reference to ppg. The 41 games i picked out did not include the games he had 28pts on 25+ shots

I know what im doin and what to look for

41 out of 82 is good

Is it Lebron good? No

But its 54wins good

JR had a better season than Tyson

I hear people in the media saying Tyson is our 2nd most valuable player all the time based on last yrs DPOY

Real fans know its JR

guns, I don't think he is trying to minimize it, but trying to put things in perspective... early in the year, kidd was as important to this team, and as big a shot maker as anyone on the squad.

Early yes but when felton went down and kidd ran out of gas playing close to 30mins per he was worthless for a very long time. I killed Woodson then for continuing to start him and play him so many minutes even when felton returned. It wasnt til Woodson benched and limited his minutes that he got his legs back under him and back healthy that he started hitting open 3s again. I got on woodson for allowing JR to chuck. I questioned woodsons IQ and job. Woodson shook things up in late March like I had pleaded and the rest is history. We won 54games 2nd seed. Game 1 of the playoffs and jr prigs kidd shump and cope are playing their best ball of the year. Even Felton is sucking less.

Is Kidd putting up 18ppg at this stage? Someone has to score for us to go deep in the playoffs. If not Amare it has to be JR and JR has picked up the slack in a big way. The burden of scoring cant be all on Melos shoulder. Its a recipe for disaster. See the last 2 playoff series. Hopefully Cope got through the initial nerves of the playoffs and he takes on some of the scoring load

No one was minimizing Smith's Buzzer beaters but he was all we had. It wasn't like Woody had a well of options when Smith was making his game winners. Like he preordained Smith into becoming a Hero Baller. Kidd also hit big 3s against the Spurs and Mavericks.

But at times it seems like the fan base is only cool with certain players getting glory or who they perceive will get glory nationally, therefore it's automatically backed. Smith's numbers weren't that good this year for his career and he didn't do anything remarkably consistent this year besides score at volume. Yes he had some clutch moments.

How did we get to 54wins then? With Amare missing the season and Melo felton and Tyson missing a ton of games? Camby sheed etc

JR was the one constant. He played EVERY GAME. Was involved in each of the 54wins

He not only gets credit but he gets a ton of credit in my book

Not sure how that's a knock against Woody, or has anything to do with JR. Woody reached out to Josh, Josh didn't take to it. Woody reached out to JR, and we're getting very good ball out of it. Not all problem children necessarily grow up.

It could be that JR is playing for a contract, but he was playing for a contract last season as well, and accepted one well below his market value to stay another year +. Everything I've heard is only encouraging of the Woodson/JR relationship. I hope it plays a part in JR signing another contract with us.

The award was well deserved, congratulations JR. If you really want to cash in on a great year, let's see some big things this post season. You're stepping into overtime.

JR said he took less money to stay. I know that last year was an up and down year for him but i bet some teams offered him at least 5-6 million per which is double what he is getting paid. He is from jersey and seems to like woody so hopefully he will stay

Much like George Karl reached out to Smith but Smith wanted to piss him off instead of heeding constructive criticism. In the end players do things on their terms. Contract yr for Smith....Contract yr for Smith.

Those who commit the long term dollars to them will have to sweat the evolution being on an upward swing.
