Gallo only played in 28 games his rookie year after injuring his back and that fought through back problems for the rest of the time he was here; remember him lying down on the sideline and stretching when he was taken out of games? He was also only 20 years old while Tyson is 30. The decrease in weight on the neck compared to the back is offset by there being less protection in terms of muscle and more movement; after one of the last games he played it was reported that Tyson wasn't even able to look up because of this.
Yep, Gallo was hindered by the back all season until it got treated in the offseason- never had any problems with it since. Think they ended up shaving a bit of his spine that was pressing against a nerve or something. Basically a bulging disc can heal itself in a few weeks. If it's still a problem after a few months then it's not going to heal itself and needs surgery.
Bulging disc's aren't an ever lasting problem- it's herniated disc's that seem to affect players for years to come (though there are exceptions). I always worry about Knick injuries, like you do, but there's a good chance this injury isn't as bad as you think it is.
