Melo's a smarter basketball player than J.R Smith.

J.R Smith is about as dumb as it gets. Very low Basketball I.Q.

Fields and Lin got what they got because those teams figured if we were to match, they signed them at a price that made it difficult to think on matching.

Now explain to yourself why other teams would bid against themselves to get J.R. Smith when there's no RFA status on him and they know the most we can offer him? Why would any team approach a near $50mil deal which is double what we can offer him. You realize all it takes is about $5mil to beat our deal?

You're talking about O.J. Mayo on pace for a payday and guess what guns it would his first and he's only 25yrs old. Not looking for a second big payday like J.R., not happening.

And Villanueva's making $8M, Ben Gordon's getting $12M, Biedrins' getting $9M, etc... there are tons of bad contracts all over the NBA.

Subtract Mr Smiths tenacious defense, end to end hustle, durability, 16 points (some with a Kobe degree of difficulty), 5 rebounds and three assists, more than one steal for each game that he plays - and consider where the Knicks (with or without Carmelo) would be without him.

Smith has made some immature decisions in the past - on and off the court - but calling him dumb says more about Synikos inability to appreciate the present, than JR. Insulting a young man is far more entertaining than applauding his growth or recognizing his positive contribution to a winning team. Syniko's stance is only a window to his insecurity and resentment.

Sad.

There's going to be nothing special about 2 volume shooters on multi year deals leading the team going forward. And I mean nothing

True but When you have guys maxed out like Melo and Amare you really don't have a choice. JR is the best you can do. There are far worst players than JR making more money

guns sorry man, i usually agree wit you.. but that is not the best we can do...

Coug those deals were signed under the old CBA and J.R. Smith is not going to be compared to Andres Biedrins and once again those guys were coming off rookie scale contracts?

So this is the thread where all the Somberites gather to plot doom and gloom. 2 volume scorers on multi-year contracts are nothing special moving forward ? That just beggs for "so true" or "+1, good point" response. The dark force is strong here, I can feel it.

I think JR can go for the first big deal or go for full bird rights with us and a new deal during the season. All depends on him though.

JR WILL be overpaid on his next contract and it can be with Knicks, if not Knicks someone will give him ridiculous money and he will one day be traded as an expiring

So? What does that mean? We've only had one offseason under the new CBA so there isn't a lot to go on.

Not sure about $50 mill total, but I can see an annual $8-$10 million salary as realistic.
