Actually, they were comparing Tyson Chandler to Garnett. Melo is Pierce, Tyson is Garnett, Shumpert is Rondo(?), and Amare is Allen (??). And that's how we're built like the Celtics.
This though came up while posting in the Pierce/Kobe/Melo thread. Someone may have already pointed this out. The biggest problem with this roster is what makes the 2012 Knicks NOTHING like the Celtics other than 3 highly paid OLDish players, with Melo/Amare on the 2nd big contract of their careers (meaning they are not stars who JUST broke out and we're getting their primes)
Chandler - best as pick and roll finisher
Amare - made his career as pick and roll finisher, working from the elbow, not the greatest defender
Melo - best at working on the elbow, not the greatest defender
The only way this roster makes sense is that Chandler on D makes up for crappy defenders. Offensively Amare and Chandler get in each others way. Melo and Amare get in each others way. Perhaps Hakeem and Woodson solve all this.
Pierce/Garnett/Ray Ray make TONS of sense offensively cuz none of them do the same thing. Garnett can bang inside/post up OR step outside.
Ray can move without the ball. Pierce can do what he do. All are pretty good and willing passers.
I can't really think of any championship teams over the past few seasons other than Miami (Wade and Lebron both succeeding dominating the ball) where the roster was constructed like this. Can anyone? Maybe Duncan and Robinson early on?
Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
