You guys are delusional. I loved watching Sheed in his prime but he's clearly a player who only tries when he's invested in the team; something he wasn't his last couple of years in Detroit and his season in Boston both of which were better than we are now. But he's going to come in here, two years removed from playing organized basketball, and he's going to be in better shape than at any point over the last 5 or so years of his career and he's going to be invested in a team that's probably going to win around 50 games and lose in the 2nd round?

Based on the entire rest of his career we can expect him to come into camp out of shape and, since he's now 38 years old, he'll stay out of shape the entire season. And then, because he's never happy on any team and even more so on a team that's only above average, he'll pout and mope and complain and not try at all just like he did on a Boston team that went to the Finals and a Pistons team that won 59 games two years before.

My point about Felton is that some people are expecting a guy who's been in the league for a while now to be a different and better player this year than he has the entire rest of his career. Kind of like they expect Wallace to be a different player than he's been his entire career. My point about Kidd is that some people a 39 year old player who was terrible last year to find the fountain of youth here and become an effective player again. Kind of like they expect Wallace to regain his youth even though he was awful the last time he played 2 years ago.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

So we needed another power forward? If that was the case fine, but Melo plays best at the four, Amare at the five, you keep bringing in older vets with strong personalities and bad things will happen. We have three starters that are always amongst the leaders in technical fouls and you bring in the craziest player arguabley of his generation. For spot minutes years removed from contributing.

We needed a shooter. Shump and brewer are injured. Will Kidd hold up? We sign some Euro who hasn't been a top player overseas for years? Where does this leave Novak a 4MM per? No reason to let Lin go to sign Steve and Jason.

The only problem I have with these moves is they appear to have little blueprint or thought. Much the way buying out billups to get Chandler without a point guard or a shooting guard on the roster.

Sheed was good five years ago. Much like Steve Francis, Tracey McGrady and every other veteran we go after. thomas, Kidd included.

On offense, Melo is exceptional at the 4, but is a liability at the 4 on the defensive end because he is not big enough to guard legit, wide shoulder 4's in the paint. Depending on the opposition, Melo should only get spot-duty at the 4. When we are matched-up against a perimeter oriented 4 or a 4 who is not offensive minded, then I can see Melo get those left-over mins. But when we go up against David West, Garnett and other legit 4's, then we cold use Wallace's length on the defensive end.

People seem to miss the point. Rasheed can keep the paint open for Melo since he can step out to the 3 and be a threat. I don't care what his 3pt % was in his last year. This guy can still scare teams with his shot and that should lead to more space for Melo to operate if they're in there together. He just gives Woody more options and that's a good thing. Rasheed is a SKILL player and not just a guy who got by on his athletic ability. It doesn't matter how old he is as long as he gets in good shape and has worked on his skills he should be able to perform at a decent level. I balled with a guy that was 70 and he was killin dudes with hook shots inside and 3's. He wasn't the fastest down court but once in the halfcourt he was effective.

The Expendables

Meanwhile, if this season ends without us seeing a Prigioni-Kidd-Wallace-Thomas-Camby lineup, I will be irate. Nickname ideas for this lineup here and on Twitter have included "The Expendables", "Space Cowboys" (my favorite, but apparently nobody else LOVES that movie), and Matt Moore's offering of "The Jurassic 5", which is pretty great.

I assume Sheed's deal will be guaranteed (making it the 14th such contract on the roster), but that hasn't been announced yet, so you never know. Either way, New York's training camp roster will hit the maximum of 20 mans. If they want to make another signing, they'll have to cut somebody.

Welcome to our team, Rasheed Wallace.

The Answer Man double dares Charles Barkley to diss the Knicks one more time in the press. Without question, Rasheed will have a snappy reply.

We must protect this house.

Who Died And Made You Mike Woodson?

Sheed will be good in spot minutes in certain games.

The cool part about sports is that they are unscripted. No one knows what will happen. We can speculate, which is a nice way to spend spare minutes, but the only thing that is a stone cold fact is the Knicks are never dull.

Given Mike Woodson's experience with Sheed in Detroit as an Assistant Coach, there is already a point of reference. There is no better motivation for a proud veteran than the incentive of someone telling him he cannot get it done. Sheed, with more pride genes than the average bear, will take to the attention in New York City like a duck to water. Playing closer to home (philly) will also give him a comfort level that he did not have in Boston.

Sure, he could pull a hamstring on the second day of practice... after he recognizes the speed of the game is too much for aging knees to handle he could suddenly call it quits... again.

But... if he discovers that he missed the game he loves more than he thought, and bonds with Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas and Jason Kidd like the reunion of Simon and Garfunkel... we could be in for more fun than The Cyclone at Coney Island.

"Let it play."

You can bet that the Old guys will slow it down to Playoff speed and look to pound teams inside with post play. The old inside/out style will be the order of the day. Kidd will bring it up at a reasonable pace and the Knicks will play smart and deliberate BB. Look to draw fouls and get to the line. The style of this team will not be 100% uptempo anymore. With the exception of when they get steals and the younger Guys get out on the Break. Even then if they don't score they'll bring the ball back out and get into their halfcourt sets.

I like the idea of having these old guys. It's never really been done like this before. Perhaps the closest is the Celtics, but this team has gone out of its way to add vets off the bench over young inexperienced players. Will it work? I have a hunch that it will. I think these guys know how to get it done and play the game at their pace. If Woody has this team focus on Post ups, player and ball movement and floor spacing in a halfcourt style of play, they'll get more FT attempts and higher % shots. All of this will help them defensively against younger faster teams.
