when you consider that the salary cap in the new system is essentially $208M total over the next 4 years... and the Nets have invested $130M of $208M on two 31yr-old former all-stars... wow.

throw deron and brooke in and it's a decent team... especially with marshon brooks and kris humphries... but damn they're capped out beyond belief.

BroPez, Gerald wallace, Humphires, MarShon and a pick or two could get it done.

you could have JJ, Deron and dwight.

Not sure how you balance the rest of it but its three all stars and pretty balanced.

Dwight freaking blew it. He could have come with no trade and they would have been stacked.

there is literally no way they can trade for dwight and give him a max deal with JJ, Gerald and Deron on the books.

Nets would have flexibility and a decent roster, but there is absolutely no way they'd have room for Dwight. Ken Berger broke down the numbers:

So let's play this out: The Nets would have Williams, Johnson ($19.75 million), Wallace (about $10 million), Lopez (whose cap hold until he's either signed, traded or renounced is $7.6 million) and Brooks ($1.16 million) on the books for a total of $55.9 million. Seven spots would count at $473,604 each -- the rookie minimum -- as cap holds, including a spot for second-round pick Tyshawn Taylor, bringing the total to $59.2 million. The Nets would be over the cap, but nowhere close to the tax apron ($69 million), so they'd have the full mid-level exception of $5 million, the bi-annual exception of $1.96 million and minimum contracts to fill out the roster. They also have two trade exceptions -- one for $3 million and another for $1.4 million -- to toy with

There was a pretty good comment left by a commenter on that article named Jeff that posted the following:

Lopez is a decent center and was only hurt last year (and Dwight just had major back surgery) and Brooks is a good young player. They were in the rumored package from this past season. Wallace is a decent player albeit overpaid, but if they can unload Hedo (somehow) for him, that’s a better trade off. And as long as Humphries isn’t overpaid (and he will be, so hopefully by not too much), he’s good for a double double. Picks on top of that are a bonus, they can be packaged later.

Honestly, I can’t think of a deal better than this. Lowry + Scola and picks isn’t as good. Bynum + Artest and picks isn’t as good, even though Bynum is a better player than the Nets players. Jason Terry + Shawn Marion + Yi Jianlian and picks? I don’t think that beats it either. Amare + Chandler + Lin + picks? Yeah that probably beats it, but Orlando likely doesn’t want Amare and I don’t think the Knicks would do that. Maybe Chandler + JR Smith + Lin + picks, but even that’s a stretch. And I don’t even know if all these add up on the cap.

It really does make Dolan look incompetent if this goes down. Nets were able to do what the Knicks have been trying to do for over a decade in the mecca of basketball in year 1 in Brooklyn

If this all goes down and the Nets wind up with their own version of the big three, MAJOR KUDOS to King and the Net hierarchy for circumventing the cap.
But, just thinking out loud here....has any reporter thought to ask Stern or the owners exactly what did they accomplish with the lockout?!? Wasn't it supposed to prevent situations like this?!?
