Calling Fields a SG is a bit of a stretch. He's closer to "designated half of the SuperNerd pregame ritual guy." Or "Gimmick Glue Guy Starter"
The link our sponsor has on the home page to KnicksBricks shows some sort of telling stats that either elaborate JR's black hole syndrome and/or the fact that with all the injuries/alzheimer's patients we had at PG this past season, he was thrust into more of a creator role than he ever should be.
I still liked the dunks. Half a season and all we got was a bad twitter pic and illegal operation of a moped. Not bad. Let Dolan give him some cash.
I think we're dissing Fields a bit hard. I mean, he's shown a lot of promise, and a lot of deficiencies. Does he get caught out there too often against quicker, more athletic guards? Yea. Do we as a community think he is a true SG? No. Can he be that Glue Guy (minus the Gimmick part) off the bench that can efficiently come into the game in the 2 or 3 spot and contribute to our winning? Yes. Has he shown flashes of being a consistently good NBA player? Yes.
As long as he works hard, like works his A** off, he has lots of upside for us.
Knicks fans love him (openly or secretly)
He's always ready
He's not overly flashy or dramatic
Has added toughness to his game - mostly shown when going to the rim against a bigger defender
Can get to the rim much easier now than he ever has
He's a positive figure for the youth of NYC
I say we see what's in store, and then make the judgement.
My point was, he's not a starter. JR or Shump should be 1 and 1A, interchangeably. Landry's your third option, which may not do much for his game after living as a starter for the past two years.
Your list of upsides is a bit wanting, although i have to concede not being injured is a major plus and almost an aberration on this team.
He can get to the rim easier than he ever has? As opposed to what? I doubt that trend continues as defenders continue to lay off him and his farcical j. Don't get me too wrong, I like Fields, he's a throwback Bill Bradley plus hops with a big minus on the jumper. But he's a bench player at best on this team when everyone's healthy now, let alone if we land another scoring option at guard.
Again, given the backcourts injury history and JR's inconsistencies, this whole conversation may be moot. "Now starting for your New York Knicks..."
Wonder whatever happened to Andy Rautins?
