Melo has lost in the first round 8/9 years, including the year after their conference finals run. Since when is a career average of 12.5pts on 43% something you make an exception to a bad behavior. He's not a fringe star, he's not an AllStar he has a problem with every coach he has ever played for and isn't a strong defender.
We have Baron coming back, a top 4 center by all accounts, according to the fan base two supertars. Why would add someone to the mix that plays one on one basketball, has an attitude and doesn't play defense. That's going to put us over the top.
I'll use your argument against you and say most of the playoff loses the Nuggs suffered with Melo was bad matchups in terms of the Nuggs were usually the higher seed. They lost to the Spurs and the Lakers twice (total of 4 playoff loses) and with the exception of Utah, I believe they were the higher seed every year and did not have homecourt advantage.
As far as Smith is concerned, I'm not arguing that point. Smith is super talented, and is 2 times better than anything we have at the 2. We certainly need an upgrade there, however, I wouldn't touch him either. He's from Jersey and bringing him home might not be a good idea.
