i'm going by what i've seen on the court from him. he looks like a SG and plays like a SG. and donnie isn't here anymore, so what he says doesn't matter much does it? i liked donnie a lot (check my signature) but he's gone.

I think they're going to DEVELOP him as a combo guard. Donnie and Mike felt the kid was able to play the point, so who are you to say otherwise? You saw him play and saw SG? What the heck does that really mean? Once they get him in camp and start to work with him, then we'll know if he can do it or not. If TD can play PG, i'm positive that Iman will be able to do it for stretches of time.

The kid can bring it up with speed and he has a great handle. I think he just needs more work in a pro offense with great coaching. I'm not saying he'll be great right from the start only the great pure PG's have it down from day one. Heck D. Rose is still learning as it Westbrook!!! I'll post it again so you can let it sink in:

Shumpert does not need the ball to be effective, making him a solid complement to the Knicks’ three stars. Although he is considered more of a combination guard than a true point, Walsh said Shumpert has the requisite playmaking skills. The Knicks need an eventual heir to Billups, who will be 35 next season.

“I think with our team offensively, he probably will play more point than he will two guard, because Chauncey can play ‘two’ probably as good as anybody,” Walsh said. “I think he can run pick-and-roll, I think he’ll see the play, and he’ll get better at it.”

Combo guard makes sense since he has the size, athleticism and skills to play both positions.

the one thing I am seeing in Shumpert that the Knicks clearly do not have: a guard who can break down his man and get into the teeth of the lane at will.

I think he'll look better in Woodson's offense than Pringle's. Man up on d, let Melo and Amar'e play the high and low posts, ping it up, defense react, Shump/Fields/TD/Shawne attack or pop a three... as opposed to get it to Melo or Amar'e/jack a three. Not to mention a slower pace lets him beat the other guy up on D

Woodson had an offensive scheme beyond "give it to JJ and watch"?

You could break down your defender and get into the teeth of the lane at will in these highlights. I love the Iman, but seriously, look at the defense.

We need to see the man playing against someone who will try to play D, at least half as aggressive as Iman does.

I don't need to see that. I really don't have a doubt that he's as agile, quick and explosive as he's shown himself to be in college, at the combine and in his workouts. If you have eyes you can see his quickness and smooth handle even without a tougher defender in front of him. Also let's be honest, there aren't that many really serious defensive players in the NBA anyway. I mean who is gonna really stop Rose, Wade or any other top guard when they want to get off? What you want is a player that gives max effort on D and helps the TEAM defensive concept work. It takes a TEAM to stop the best scorers in the NBA. I don't see Iman being any different.

It's not like he was being stopped in College and couldn't score. He got to the line at a good clip too. Even those who bash his passing have to understand that his role changed. He started off avg'ing 5 asts a game and that number went down as he was playing more as a scorer.

Summer leagues generally favor guards and swing men. Some guys at impact are putting up amazing numbers. What I take away from this is that Shumpert is and has been working on his game and that Billups recognizes his talent and teachability. Every time I see Iman interviewed I am impressed.

Let me tell you all what I believe it the biggest difference between Iman and most of the guys we have seen come in with lot's of hype. Iman already has a mid-range game!!! That's a huge development for a guard. He's 6-6 with a strong and athletic body, but more important he can pull up and get's great elevation on his shot. It's a weapon that usually helps players to be able to be effective even against good defensive teams. So what you have is a player that can get to the hole and finish, with power but can also pull up and hit a mid-range jumper. That's what I see in this kid. I could be wrong, but I was ecstatic when we took him cuz I felt he had a lot of potential to be really good.

Seeing this kids highlights only makes it even more unbearable that there's a lockout and we already have it effecting the usual preseason!!! I hope the owners and players realize how angry this is going to make the fans. If it goes into the regular season, they may lose much of the goodwill they had built up.

Good young players that will be together/grow together/win together for years to come is exciting. But this is the Knicks. Without the wise guidance of Donnie. Iman will star, Fields will grow, and then they'll be shipped out in a pre-deadline deal for some PG with bum knees. It's just a matter of time.
The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.
