well, here is what Donnie is saying on conf call:

- Dolan wanted multi-year, Donnie not willing to do that cause he knew he would put in 100% but couldn't over multi years.
- Donnie: other assurances weren't prob.
- Donnie: no prob working with Dolan

- Donnie OK with 1 year deal offer but with uncertainty with new deal it made it tough for both Dolan/Donnie.

Now you can stop you rampant speculation. It was Walsh's call.

This is truly a sad day for Knicks fans, after waiting for more than a decade for this team to finally have the pieces to build a contender, James Dolan let go the one guy that with patience and creativity made possible. For all the fans that are happy because MDA may get fire now, they truly don’t know that as the President of the New York Knicks, Donnie Walsh’s job was way more than hiring a coach, just look at the Knicks; we can truly say today, that we don’t have one single bad contract on our team. On top of that, we may have enough flexibility to probably bring another superstar or bring two quality starters to round up the team. How many teams in the NBA today have two superstars and still posses enough cap flexibility for big improvements? Let’s just hope that Dolan hire a good and proven GM, because there are other good ones out there, otherwise, I don’t think I can’t wait anymore.

Islah's contract with Florida International ends after next year, right?

Duck Folan. He's gotta be ripe for an early death with the drugs and excessive lifestyle. Where's Seal Team 6 when you need them.

Reading between the lines went out a long ago, it went with Isiah, Brown, LeBron sick of reading between the lines because it is always wrong.

Walsh didn't give the multi year commitment that Dolan wanted him to take. Walsh probably still wants Indiana.

Disappointing for sure. DW brought the team back to respectability. He acquired 2 super star players but missed out on the big superstar. The next part of the team building is the hard part and will take some good leadership.

Perhaps this is the prelude to a change in coaching too. Perhaps a new GM will see that defense wins and that a new coach will be needed.

I hope Grunwald does not get the gig. The Denver guy would be good. I would love to see Rod Thorn but he is taken.

Let the speculation begin!

Reading between the lines Walsh wanted what Riles wanted and that was total control.

I think Dolan when dolan took control of the MeloDrama that was the end for Donnie.

Lets be real, as it stands we likely don't have the juice to have a true contender but one that can compete and puts out a very good product and promotes the brand. Maybe over time we can build like th Lakers or Spurs and get to the next level.

My opinion does not mean "We are phucked" but the direction of the team has a ceiling.

While Pre melo was certainly no juggernut and lots to do you had a core of players with rising value and service and picks. Maybe smaller deals adding up could have amounted to a better result. WE can speculate in any direction here.

Reading between the lines Walsh wanted somting Dolan could not offer anymore and perhaps Walsh knew it was not there.

Best scenario is two men who basically agree on 90% of how they want it to work but can't get to 100%. IT happens.

Think of how better off we would be if DOlan had not stuck his nose into the Melo trade. We would probably have Moz and at least one more draft pick.

Spoke with an NBA source who said contract extension talks included $3M reduction in salary, from $5M to $2M.

Any truth to what Isola is saying that Dolan offered 40% cut on salary to Donnie? Just a crazy day...

back when i was a Mets fan a few years ago (i have since abandoned baseball) i was having an offseason baseball discussion with Yanks fan and UK poster, Fishmike. it was pretty brief, he asked me "What do you think the Mets are going to do this offseason?" and i replied with my own question, "What's the worst possible thing that can happen?" he answered with a catastrophic series of decisions that they could make and i replied "That's what they're going to do."

this is how i feel about the Knicks now. i know i'm just catastrophizing at this point, but i'm envisioning the repeat of the Marbury years. now Melo will play the role of Steph and Amare will play the role of Allan Houston. i'm just being extreme, but doesn't it seem just slightly more realistic after today?
