We got 2 all-stars, 1 veteran pg. We can make some noise in the playoffs.

Melo was on Dream Team, perennial All-Star..has carried his team to 50+ wins almost every year, Won a NCAA title damn near by himself, gives Lebron fits on the offensive end..He is indeed a Superstar. Not even close..there is Kobe, Lebron, Wade and Melo just below that 3.

So where do Dirk, Durant, Howard and Rose fall? My problem isn't really with Melo. I'd take him on my squad any day of the week...unless of course you're asking for all of my assets + I gotta pay him 20 mil per. Melo is what I'd call a star player. Basically what I'm saying is, I like pairing Melo with Stat but I'm upset because Isiah got fleeced.

From that pool last ten seconds you need a gamewinner who do you want with the ball...Kobe, Wade, Melo & Dirk...with Durant trailing a little. Lebron is not as clutch as Melo by the way. Melo plays hard on defense by the way..Not as strong as Wade and Lebron but he is no slouch and has great pride.

If we're talking gamewinners then I'm taking the four guys you mentioned plus Jamal Crawford, Paul Pierce, Rudy Gay, Manu Ginobili and possibly even a guy like Tim Thomas over several top 10 players. But what about if you need a defensive stop?

Rudy Gay & Tim Thomas??? LOL..come on man..now you are reaching. Not only is he a gamewinner but he is a multiyear Allstar. Defensive Stops are important I'll give you that..but we have also lost several games this year because certain players disappeared offensively (Gallo/Chandler) or we didn't have a closer on the wing. We have erased both those problems cause Melo brings it every night.

Crazy cause this sounds like the same stuff people were saying all off season about Amare. Then we see the product and go DAMN..so this is what a Superstar Player can do.

Rebuilding takes time and can be fun also.

I hope melo is up to the pressure. I hope he is up to the task.

And don't even think of taking Earls number down!

sad in a way.

Yeah gonna really miss Gallo and Chandler. Good Guys but change is never easy.

exactly

The term "no-brainer" is one of my least favorite terms. I especially hate it when it is used in reference to any deal the Knicks are a part of.

this is an excellent point... but I would make this deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I do not think we ggave up one "A" talent. At best a bunch of "B" talent. Melo is one of the most clutch players in the game. Our last shot options are Amar'e And Melo in the high and low post. Billups, Fields, Walker, and Williams shoot high percentage from three. I like what Turiaf and Brewer bring tot he table. I like what Earl Barron would bring. And I will hopefully like what the Knicks add and UFA, as well as if they draft Kenneth Faried.

I will take this scenario over and over again as opposed to hope and pray our young players turnout into stars. If that happens, yeah, the Knicks lost the trade. But what's the likelihood that actually happens?

Briggs, you have to tone it down. You have really good points and it gets lost when you post stuff like this.

Watch Donnie and Mike D reload the bench with guys who were playing street ball last week and make it work.

Your favorite player, Earl Barron, will be back shortly and the only thing we need after that is a quick pg.

Amare isn't going to have to work as much for his shot, I also have a feeling that Melo and Stat will be better at moving the ball around than people think, especially with Billups around. Sometimes players need a change of scenery to get their game going, I wouldn't be surprised if someone who we have already written off from Denver turns out to be a pleasant surprise and helps the team.

I honestly don't see Isiah ever being in the picture as long as David Stern is around. He's embarrassed the team and league too much. Definitely think those were empty rumors that will disappear since the trade is done.

That said, I have mixed feelings. This isn't the worst trade in history, that's preposterous. But it's hard for me to get excited. I retired that part of my brain after The Decision, and wasn't a huge fan of the Amar'e trade, but was proven wrong there.

I am weary after the melodrama of this, and I really haven't watched Melo play much. But looking forward to watching some basketball games and rooting for the orange and blue.

Read the thread. Very disappointed with all that we gave up. INFURIATED that we're getting Balkman back. Was very attached to departing players, even though Felton was out of control sometimes. Still a fan, just not a happy one

I think this is a very marginal situation as far as who got the better of the deal - in my opinoin this is a very even trade.

Sure we did not end up raping the Nugs, but why should we have?

Our starting linup is very good, and we have nice deapth:

C: Turiaf / Barron
PF Amare / Sheldon Williams
SF Melo / Williams
SG Fields / Walker
PG Billups / TD

On the bubble: Brewer, Mason, Rautings, Azu

In the off season we will spend the MLE on a starting C and the LLE on a backup PG and we should be a complete title contender next year.

Then in 2012 Billups comes of the cap, and we can get Deron or Paul, plus use the MLE and LLE to further upgrade the bench and C spot.

I would say we are in great shape.

Lets keep some things in perpsective, if 3 years ago Walsh promise us Amare, Melo and Billups, and a guy like Fields plus a decent bench, we would all gladly accept that.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Two words I'd been waiting to hear since August, when this started to become a reality, were finally uttered to me tonight on a brief phone call:

"It's done."

Here are the details of a complicated three-team trade that was finalized Monday:

The Knicks get Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, along with former Knick Renaldo Balkman, forward Shelden Williams and guard Anthony Carter from Denver and Corey Brewer and, though I can't entirely confirm it, it sounds like a first round pick from Minnesota, as well.

Denver gets Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton and Timofey Mozgov, plus the Knicks' 2014 first round pick, two future second round picks, $3M in cash and a boatload of cap/tax savings as a result of the deal.

Minnesota gets Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph and $3M in cash as well, plus GM David Kahn gets a huge Thank You from his mentor, Donnie Walsh. (Perhaps the Knicks promise to lay off Ricky Rubio as a gentleman's agreement in this deal...kidding...maybe not).

From what I'm told, neither Brewer nor the first round pick may remain in the Knicks' possession beyond Thursday's trade deadline, but what either could be used for remains unknown. The deal leaves one open roster spot for the Knicks to fill with, perhaps, some much-needed big man help with the departure of the 7-1 Mozgov. Right now the Knicks' size consists of 6-10 Amar'e Stoudemire, 6-10 Ronny Turiaf, 6-9 Shawne Williams and 6-9 Shelden Williams. Has Earl Barron kept working out?

What about Rasheed Wallace, who actually would be a perfect fit in D'Antoni's system? There was talk in January of Sheed possibly coming out of retirement to join the Celtics, but nothing has materialized.

The Knicks could open up other spots by waiving Carter, Williams, or even Roger Mason, who are each on expiring one-year veterans minimum deals.

As for the future, the cap situation is impossible to project because there will be a new CBA in place for that season.

So let's just provide the payroll for now: $60,610,763 in salaries for nine players, with $1,577,744 in non-guaranteed money ($788,872 for second-round picks Landry Fields and Andy Rautins). But that's not taking into account the team's 2011 first round pick, which is an automatic cap hit. The Rockets, as part of the Tracy McGrady trade from last season, have the right to swap picks with the Knicks if Houston finishes with a better record.

We don't know what the new system will bring, but considering this year's cap is $59M, it's safe to assume the Knicks will be capped-out for the 2011-12 season. So, unless there is a shocking development in collective bargaining and the reviled mid-level exception survives, the Knicks won't be able to sign anyone. So forget making a play for Tyson Chandler or signing Marc Gasol or DeAndre Jordan to offer sheets. The most the Knicks will be able to do is add a few depth players on veteran's minimum deals.

So who will be the starting center in 2011-12? Don't laugh, but the team does have 2010 second round pick Jerome Jordan, a gangly 7-footer, playing over in Europe.

As we've explained here at the Fix before, the Knicks could get some cap space if they waive Billups within five days of their final game (playoffs count) of the 2010-11 season. After five days, his entire $14.2M salary for 2011-12 locks in. If he's waived, the team only owes him $3.7M, which means a $10.5M savings.

But, of course, it would also mean a huge deficit at the starting point guard position, which is an area you don't want to have to address until 2012.

The Carmelo trade, once he signs the extension, will have a major impact on the 2012 cap situation, of course. If you factor in the 105 percent increase (and check my math, Fixers, because you know I'm brutal), Carmelo's salary for 2012-13 will be $19,444,502. Amar'e is slated to make $19,948,799. The only other salary commitment the Knicks have, to date, is Balkman's $1,675,000. The team doesn't have a first round pick in '12 (that goes to Houston), but the salary for their '11 pick will also be included here, plus the anticipated extension that Fields is likely to get if he keeps up his quality play. But just factoring in the commitments currently on the ledger, the Knicks are locked in for $41,068,301 for three players.

Again, with the uncertainty of the new CBA and the system that will be installed, it's impossible to predict how much cap space the Knicks will have to spend to fill out a roster of at least nine more players to reach the requisite 12.

Will it be enough to be able to sign the much-needed third piece to the roster, a star point guard such as Deron Williams or Chris Paul? It might not matter. Considering that the Nuggets came away pretty well from the experience of trading Anthony rather than losing him for nothing the way the Cavaliers, Suns and Raptors did with their stars last summer, perhaps the Hornets and Jazz follow the same script.

If that's the case, the Knicks have acquired a valuable commodity in Billups, with a $14.2M salary slot as an expiring contract to help match a salary such as Williams' and Paul's $16.3M in a trade deadline deal. The Knicks would still need to develop at least one, if not more, quality young assets that would interest the Jazz.

But would Williams or Paul follow Carmelo's strategy and make it clear they would only sign contract extensions with a certain team. Williams has already said he wouldn't want to go through what Carmelo just went through this season.

You know what? None of us want to go through it again, either.

Mr. Hahn to back me up.

Unless someone wants Billups' expiring and some scrub prospect like Rautins or Walker then there is no third max guy.

Merry Christmas.

Plus we may still be able to trade TD and one of the many extra 2s on the roster for a better backup PG, and maybe try and pickup another C.

I think Corey Brewer and Shelden Williams can be pretty good here. They were thought of as top 10 talents in their draft class - actually both went top 7.

Knicks bench will be fine.

Hard to believe that some folks are not understanding this. With the uncertainty of the new CBA and potential incentives for players to remain with their original teams, we are facing a period of time where the Knicks will be an entertaining, but ultimately unsatisfying team which will never get over the hump.

... but we WILL have two perennial all-stars to gloat about and serve as consolation for being knocked out in the second round.

We got back crap talent in Brewer, Balkman, Carter and Williams add those guys to Rautins and Mason Jr and that's nearly half a roster of guys that bring nothing to the table.

EXACTLY

I think Corey Brewer and Shelden Williams can be pretty good here. They were thought of as top 10 talents in their draft class - actually both went top 7.

Knicks bench will be fine.

Carmelo Anthony is one of those rare players that makes his teammates better too, so that should be factored into the analysis. Him and Amar'e together... should open things up for everyone else. Maybe guys like TD will start driving instead of chucking
