Just because the Nets are out of the picture doesn't mean we should low-ball Denver. Our standing offer of 1 of Gallo, Chandler, or Fields likely hasn't changed. The only thing that's changed is Denver's willingness to accept our package now.

i agree we shouldn't lowball... but i don't agree that denver is more willing to take our package. they don't want to deal with NY. we know this. they dont want to deal with NY.

That could be, but that's also just unsubstantiated speculation.

My point was that we would NEVER have been considered as long as that Nets deal remained on the table. Now that it's off, Denver has to start entertaining our calls. I highly doubt they'd be so unprofessional as to not even listen to the Knicks out of spite.

I think this killed the deal. The owner was so set on meeting with Carmelo and confident he could convince him, I think he got his feelings hurt. New York makes to much sense for Melo and his career. He is subtly forcing his way to NY while trying to be careful of his image.

In a post-game interview on Sunday night, Carmelo Anthony expressed no interest in meeting with New Jersey's top officials, who want a face-to-face discussion with Anthony to convince him to sign a contract extension with the Nets.

Anthony said contact with the Nets should be made by Denver's front office.

"I don’t want to talk to nobody. I let the front office handle that type of stuff."

Reports are swirling that the Nuggets have granted the Nets permission to speak with Anthony as the final details of a three-team trade are apparently being hammered out.

Anthony elaborated on his statement, saying that he does not want to get involved with speaking to any team, specifically mentioning the Knicks too. However, it is widely believed that the Nets will need a meeting with Anthony to sell him on joining their team.

I think Melo told the Nuggets ages ago that he wouldn't sign with the Nets. The Nuggets probably thought they could still pressure him to agree to a trade if they set it all up, and got Hamilton to the Nets. Then last week he again told them and the Nets that he wouldn't agree to a trade and that he wouldn't even meet with the Nets owner. I think this is why the trade didn't get done, then to save face the Nuggets leaked that the hold up was them not agreeing to a framework, and then the Nets owner to save face about Melo not meeting him has declared the trade dead, then Melo out of courtsy is now claiming he would have met him. All party's with talking a whole lot of BS! Now the Nuggets will play up the chances of him going to the Rockets and Bulls to try to maintain some leverage.

Excellent explanation.

I think the Russian is lying. In my opinion he gave very good tangible reasons not for why the deal is dead, but why the rumors are disruptive to his team.

The price has gone up but this would be a technique to pull some of it back in. The Nets look desperate and Prokhorov is a man hardly desperate!

IT boils down to Money for Melo. If he wants the money. He has to stay or go Nets. Nets should still offer more than knicks but they likely have used this to slow it down and take it underground.

Im speculating on the fundamentals of communication and logic, not wishful trade scenarios where I dictate players and sugar coat with a second round pick and 3mil in cash.

If the Russian is lying, it was a smart lie. The Nets beat the Jazz -- on "Russian Night" no less -- with 7 Nets in double figures, snapping a six-game skid.

More from the rumor mill... Golden State Warriors commenting on the Melo situation:

http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm

Lacob said the new ownership group has already agreed that, if an elite player is available, the Warriors would be willing to increase their payroll above the current luxury-tax level. Yes, Lacob said, he has been actively monitoring the Anthony situation. "We've had discussions with Denver," Lacob said. "And I think it's possible. But unfortunately, he clearly wants to be one place geographically." San Jose Mercury-News

Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Trade, Carmelo Anthony | share
Lacob suggested the Warriors' potential package -- which would certainly have to include Curry or Ellis, just as a start -- is better than anything the Knicks could offer. "We think we have better assets to go after someone like him, that caliber, than most of the teams out there that are being talked about," Lacob said. San Jose Mercury-News

This somewhat confirms what I have suspected from the start: Melo only wants The Garden. He'll be a Knick within 3 weeks. Book it, Danno.

I think the Nyets will come back to the table with a lesser offer - one they'll make without Melo signing an extension. Then they'll try to convince him to sign the extension by July 1.

The Nets aren't out of this - this is the oldest negotiating ploy in the book. Walk away from the table to get what you want.

Do you hold press conference to go this route? Usually it's a gesture and the news gets out, but calling a televised press conference to say go blow seems a bit more than a bluff OR it's the most over-the-top bluff EVER!!!

But who am I to judge the Russian mafia...I mean legitimate business people.

dude, give it up already... Melo doesn't want to be a Net... ESPN showed a clip of him last night saying he was done with all the NJ talks... how much clearer can he make himself without actually coming out & saying "I don't want to be a Net"? why the hell would the Nets give up anything for a rental when they know Melo's gonna leave this summer to join the Knicks anyway? that would just add further embarassment to an already ridiculous situation for their franchise. they are not going to be a championship contender with Melo in the fold, they want him as a longterm face for their franchise... they won't be interested in any rental scenarios.

I haven't even read your post beyond the first few words. I think NJ is done going after him, I was just responding to crazymad's speculation. I think they pulled too big to be bluffing and I like the idea that they used a media event to say "we're out." I know Melo doesn't want to play in Jersey even if it's just for one year.
