I agree that we should not bargain against ourselves. At he same time, we want to make a credible offer for a franchise player that spells the end of Denver's current run. We want them to accept our offer before the deadline.

How about...

Curry + Buke + AR + TD + 2014 1st (lottery protected) + 1 of the GS 2nd rounders + $3mil for Melo. We keep Gallo. We keep Chandler by using his Bird rights to exceed the cap. We use our LLE on Williams and our MLE on a defensive C. These moves allow us to contend for a chip for the duration of Amare's contract, starting THIS season. Yes, that roster can beat any team in the league. The only defense we lose is TD's, and we still have backcourt defensive stoppers in Ray Ray and Fields. We can draft a backup defensive PG this summer.

THIS is our best offer, take it or leave Ujiri.

We still have to beat out teams who may be willing to rent Melo. They won't offer a lot, but surely they'd offer more than just Randolph/Curry. That's such a craptastic package that Denver would likely just hang up the phone.

I still think Gallo or Chandler will be included for Melo. One of them will be expendable anyway with Melo on the team. These latest developments just means that Denver will now be more willing to accept this offer, but I don't think we'd go so far as to lowball them.

Name a team willing to trade for Melo as a half year rental. Now, are these teams you just mentioned willing to gut their team to get Melo. Melo has a huge contract. They would need to make a 3 for 1 package assuming they have a contract like Fat Curry.

Any GM would not risk getting fired by trading for Melo for just a little over a half a year and sending almost all their assets to get him. That is just not good business.

For all you guys thinking we are giving Denver a great deal. You do realize picks from us will be late first rounders right? LOL at the idea of Denver excepting lottery protection on a pick that will be guaranteed late first round unless Amare AND Melo go down in the same season.

Yeah, these aren't great packages...they can't and probably won't offer more...but they still beat out a crap AR/'Buike package.

i agree... u want to present a good deal for the Knicks perspective but u also don't want to insult the other team by presenting a crappy package either... including Gallo in with AR at least gives the Nuggets 2 high 1st round worthy talents out of this deal, which is a lot more than what CLE, TOR or PHO got back this past summer... throw in our 2nd round picks, a future #1 or cash considerations & expiring contracts & that's a solid package for a guy they'll likely lose for nothing anyway... & from our perspective, we really don't lose much... pretty much replacing Gallo with Melo in the current rotation if you make that trade... it's a no brainer.

Chris Sheridan just did a chat largely about his recent reporting regarding Carmelo Anthony. Sheridan is adamant that Anthony will not sign an extension with the Nets or Nuggets.

Knick fans have been thinking: Well hell, if Anthony insists on playing for the Knicks, why give up anything for him? Why not just sign him as a free agent?

Sheridan, who says it's 75 percent likely a trade will happen before the trade deadline, explains:
Carmelo is under contract through next season, but he has an opt-out (actually an ETO, basically the same thing). So Carmelo is not considered an expiring contract, and he remains tradeable right up until June 30 if the Nuggets hang onto him past the deadline. Also, the extension that's sitting on the table is good through June 30, too. This is a piece of leverage the Nuggets hold over the Knicks, because N.Y. needs to make the trade by Feb. 24 in order to include Eddy Curry's expiring contract in the deal. And you need the Curry money to make the salaries match.

... No one knows what the rules of the new collective bargaining agreement will be, and there could be a lockout. If you trade for him this season and sign him to the extension, you have the piece of mind of knowing that he's on your roster for the next five years, no matter how long the lockout (if there is one) lasts.

Don't we still have enough room to sign Melo after June 30th if/when he decides to opt out?

Hell yes we do. Takes some maneuvering, but yes.

Your Dallas package, you need to add more contract. You would need to add either Marion or Haywood to make the trade work. I don't think Dallas will trade for Melo for a half year rental for that much asset.

For Orlando, Vince for Carmelo works straight up but why would you get Vince at that money at his age for 1 more year. They want assets not expiring for the following year. Adding Harrington for Denver and Orton/Gortat for Orlando does not work as per realgm trade checker.

Gettting Curry's expiring and the talents of AR is a lot better than both those packages I believe.

Does Melo want to leave Denver for basketball reasons or because he wants to come to ny, team with his buddy amare and make wifey happy?

If he's leaving to win Dallas makes sense. OrlandO does too. I suspect he's leaving for non basketball reasons because Ty Lawson nene and whoever they sign once billups is traded/expires aint terrible

I suspect we don't really have to sweat other teams

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

I was just naming the principals. Caron Butler + Deshawn Stevenson + Beaubois + 1st rounders works under the cap rules, and also saves Denver an extra $3M from luxury tax payments.

Vince is an expiring, his next year is unguaranteed. He's included to match contracts. And even then, at least Denver gets a servicable player over fatass Eddy Curry. Adding Harrington for Orton/Gortat does work, and if you're using RealGM trade checker, it's only stopping you cause Harrington can't be traded until Dec. 15.

I'm not making the argument that these are good packages. They're pretty awful and they're likely the best Orlando or Dallas can and are willing to offer. But they're just as competitive with a Curry/AR package, and if you think otherwise, you're likely overrating the value of AR.

My point is that there are no other teams that will want to trade for Melo if they are not signing him for an extension. It is difficult enough to make trades without limiting yourself to your trade partners. Denver does not have a lot of options. Overrating AR is not the point. If Denver does not want to lose Melo ala LeDouche then the only thing we are giving them is Fat Eddy's expiring and AR. Azabuike is contract filler.

The teams that want to trade for Melo are the Nets and Chicago. If they are willing to gut their team for a half year rental then good for them. I will wait for Melo in the summer.

I wouldn't go so far as to say there are no teams willing to rent Melo. If the price is low enough and the GM feels that Melo's addition may push them over the hump and get them the championship, they may risk it...just as Detroit did when they traded for an expiring Rasheed Wallace, who had publicly stated he was going to sign with NY in the offseason. A championship run can change any player's mind.

My point is that we have to beat these teams' offers. And it's pretty easy to do since their likely best offers are pretty garbage. But I doubt AR/Curry/'Buike/2014 1st gets the job done, and that's also an insult to Denver's FO.

Rasheed was not a max player. What was his contract? It was easier to eat his contract than what you would have to surrender for Melo.

kind of a bad comparison cause Detroit gave up nada for Wallace and there really wasn't much of a threat from Rasheed to land in a particular spot.

Melo wants to be here PERIOD! Thing is what does DW want to do? This thing with Denver is likely to go on
until the trade deadline and who knows what our situation will be then. It may be that Walsh feels less inclined
to give them what they want. I think this thing ends badly for Denver. Their best play is to make a deal now
rather than wait. By waiting the pressure shifts even more onto them to make something happen. Forget it if
we're in the playoffs with a high seed. Then DW will really play hardball with them. It might end up being a
deal of Fields, AR, AZ, Curry and picks.

Trade ID #5764314
Congratulations on a successful trade.

Due to Denver and New York being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Denver and New York had
to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did
happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Change in Team Outlook: +2.1 ppg, +2.7 rpg, and +1.3 apg.
Incoming Players
Carmelo Anthony
6-8 SF from Syracuse

Is the company line as fans still acting like we don't want/need Melo or is it ok to make Sigs and homemade Melo knicks jerseys???? LOL

You gotta believe Ar and Gallo is good enough for a player demanding a TRADE NO???

Besides the backtracking of Melo, his people, and other "sources" behind this story, the dynamic has changed greatly. Melo supposedly finally used the ultimate power and leverage he has to demand a trade to only NY (I stress the newly "suppose-ed" nature of the notion). This forces Denver's hand if they want to get some value in return for losing their franchise for a few years or more. Now, however, Denver has regained leverage with NY in that they can start to make demands. These demands now have further strength since Melo is now saying he never made the trade demand. So if the Knicks still want him, the Nuggets are going to want the best deal they can out of NY. Don't be surprised if that means Chandler AND Fields/Gallo (hell, maybe all three), along with the contract and AR traded for a first round pick. I'm not saying that Walsh agrees to that deal, but the Nuggets aren't just going to settle for scraps. Denver doesn't care if Melo goes to Jersey or Chi-town instead of NY.

The reality is back to Melo not enforcing the full leverage of ONLY going to the Knicks. If he really wanted to come to NY, he'd play out the season and sign as a free-agent when the smoke from the CBA clears. He could start signing NYC-based endorsements once his season ends and be ready to sign with the Knicks when the lockout ends. That way he doesn't gut the team he's so interested in playing for... But he's made it clear that he wants that extension money, so it's gonna cost whatever team he's traded a lot of talent and a lot of money.

He could start signing NYC-based endorsements once his season ends and be ready to sign with the Knicks when the lockout ends. That way he doesn't gut the team he's so interested in playing for... But he's made it clear that he wants that extension money, so it's gonna cost whatever team he's traded a lot of talent and a lot of money.

to melo. pass on this guy.

what Marv said

Who is the "source"?

Until an author is willing to attribute the quote to a person it is ALL fabricated. To the very last word.

The Knicks do not need Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo Anthony needs the NYKnicks for leverage.

Source: Melon will only sign an extension if he's traded to the Knicks
