Frank Isola Bores The Answer Man

Rather than throwing out random guesses at who the starters will be, Isola should be thinking about the three Cs: chemistry, creativity and compatibility.

Chemistry - because you gotta switch on defense and hit the open man on offense (25 assists per game)

Creativity - because Anthony Randolph defies traditional position stereotypes, Danilo Gallinari just might play center and Timofey Mozgov is at his best on the move. 6'11 - 6'10.5 - 7'. You do the math.

Mozgov was the first person, ever, to make all the ladies in the house say "Owww!"

Compatibility - the Knicks have versatile talent at the 2. Roger Mason started for the Spurs, Bill Walker is in his rookie season and The Mayor is a fluid 6'8, 240. If 6'9 Shawne Williams is approaching his basketball career with an increased dose of professionalism, we may be treated to a glimpse of why he was a first round selection. Think Tayshaun Prince, righthanded, with more muscles.

That makes four.

One more thing, it is not who starts but who finishes.

Indeed cement has been known to crumble and stone beaten to dust. We may see Amar'e/Mozgov/Gallo/Douglas/Felton to start; but d'Antoni has historically favored vets. And at least in the first 2-3 game stretch WillChan will play the 2 likely with Turiaf at the 5. Mozgov shall absorb the NBA ruleset in a mind-meld moment and push for rookie of the year.
Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

A Chorus Line

Olbrannon - good take on the veteran thing, but I have a sense that seven seconds or less will take a backseat if 25 turnovers or more continues.

Look for D'Anotni to take a critical look to determine his best ball handlers and weave them together in a pre season game.

It's totally crazy, and not so sexy, but if Andy Rautins keeps walkin the walk, he will get a long audition.

After hearing of knee issues and his poor showing in Summer League Rautins stellar play against Minny was a nice surprise. He did not appear slow and knocked down his looks.

The vets (Mason, Felton) who have the least time in the Knicks offense look the most out of sync. I seem to remember TD doing the same thing in pre-season last year...and taking some time to find his rhythym within the flow of the offense.

Chandler has looked real good. I'm not worried about Gallo or Stat at all.

"Pretty impressive 'd' for Toney against Telfair...turned him into an assist man" Clyde informed us during last game. He's getting there ...he just needs minutes at this point.

NEW York

Olbrannon - we are all witnesses to a Knicks paradigm shift. The culture of our beloved franchise has changed right before our lyin' eyes. In the coming weeks the competition (especially at guard-swing spots) will be fierce and the practices (man, we talkin bout practice) intense.

It won't be dull.

IN

Rautins - from Orange to orange and blue, he has that pro mojo and knows how to use it
Fields - Allan Houston meets Doug Christie, without the shadow of the old lady of course
STAT - yo, put some clothes on dude! nobody here wants to see your package.
Gallo - with the Milan tour guide duties behind him he can focus on playing ball
Felton - scrappy do
Mozgov - "panhandlers who pass Mozgov on the street become instant celebrities"
Randolph - nice socks
Douglas - poised to make it do what it do in his sophomore season
Turiaf - thank you for the off season workout memos
The Mayor - is always in

OUT

Junior - needs a dramatic statement in a pre season game
Mason - this ain't San Antonio, you better bring it
Walker - "what have you done for lately?" - Janet Jackson
Williams - see above, and stay away from that loco weed
Curry - get thee to a therapist, immediately, there are some things more important than basketball
Azubuike - get well soon and don't push it

Theme Music: "Got to give the people, give the people what they want." - The O'Jays.

How about a 6'5 guard with a trustable handle and a dependable shot?

"That's why they brought me in, to be in this system, get up and down and hit open shots," Rautins told The (cough) Post. "I'd love to be part of the rotation to help the team win, be part of the turnaround in the city. I definitely think I can help them."

Rautins is a dead ringer for the lead guy, Lillo Brancato, in A Bronx Tale. Kinda cool huh?

I LOVE that movie. One of those great stories that brings back memories from my youth.

Rautins gives you a good feeling cuz we really need what he brings to the table. Felton, TD, Mason and Rautins could be a really good safety net for the ups and downs of this season at PG. I can't think when we've had this many defensively strong guards. I was saying this all summer that our biggest improvement would likely come on Defense. I can foresee some really intense pressure from our guard contingent this year. I really like that Mike is trying to institute that concept this year.

that movie should've been required for Nate, Craw, and Curry

Lorenzo: "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent."

The Answer Man is shocked no one has delivered the side by side photos of Rautins and "C"

If Benjamin Franklin knew Mozgov would get the start against the Celtics on Wednesday, he would have invented cable television a long time ago.

Youngsters Not Serving Knicks Well

"The Knicks have a roster with one star player, Amar'e Stoudemire, and several talented but young players around him. Heading into tonight's preseason game against the Nets at the Garden, that's exactly how that roster has performed"

- Tim Bomtemps

Who is dis guy?

He patches together a few quotes and offers absolutely nothing to back his juicy headline.

The Knicks have one star, Amar'e, and seven dwarfs. Nice theory. Where is the persuasive evidence that it won't work?

Nah, let's just pack in the season and get ready for the draft lottery.

Fields provides more intuitive ball movement and will attack the rim for rebounds. He has a quick bounce in his step. Make it so.

Starters

Felton 6', dump the white socks with the black high tops son
Fields 6'7, bold move and a reward for a Summer and Fall of solid play
Gallo 6'10, go strong
Amar'e 6'10
Mozgov 7', will become a target for Fields

Who Got Next?

The Mayor 6'8, will add some punch off the bench
DWTDD 6'2, will listen to Daddy and work hard
Walker 6'5, will continue to gain confidence
Turiaf 6'10, will keep a smile on his face

Pine Brothers

Mason Jr, needs to prove he can make the shot
Rautins, work on your handle
Williams needs to stay out of trouble and in the gym

Nice Suit

Randolph 6'11
Curry
Azubuike

The Report Card

G - "Don’t compare me to Steve Nash. … I don’t want to be compared to nobody. I want to be Raymond Felton … my own person."
The recent performances of Ray Felton (please stop with the silly trade speculation and Steve Nash slurpfest) give credence to the notion that he reported out of shape. Finding his rhythm may be as much a by-product of chiseling some pounds off his frame as much as Amar'e picking hard and rolling smooth

G - Thank you for the early Christmas Gift known as Landry Fields. A bold move by Donnie Walsh and a bold move by D'Antoni to start him. His assist numbers will increase as the word gets out that he must be accounted for a all times. Having a strong 6'7 guard is a huge plus on the defensive end and on the glass. Steve Francis, please pick up the orange courtesy phone.

F - Gallo - keep shooting, but don't forget to floss and don't forget the pump fake.

F - The Mayor - now that he has a role model in Amar'e, he only needs to follow big brothers footsteps and go hard. You bring that weak **** in here and you will get it marked "return to sender." Fast don't lie? 22 and 7 don't lie. Vote early and often.

F- Amar'e said "The Knicks are back" and the reporters snickered. Stoudemire did not stay late after practice in Greenburgh to work on his interview skills. He was at work on his moves. I miss Kurt Thomas

C - Turiaf - take your time a heal. We need you on the floor.

C - Mozgov - D'Antoni needs to leave him out there. Let Mozgov play until he fouls out or runs out of gas, but he needs to play. The adjustment to a new country is huge and the refs tendencies will remain a mystery until he has been around the league at least once. He works hard, hustles, runs back on defense and is always in motion. What's not to like, except for the fact his hands betray him more than a Buffalo Bills wide receiver. Let him play!

DWTDD - help is on the way. Stop dribbling into traffic or into the corner. He has court awareness but if he continues to turn it over, don't be surprised to see Landry Fields cameo at lead guard. It could happen. Nah. D'Antoni ain't THAT crazy, right?

Bill Walker - he lost the headband, now he needs to find his way to the rack for a few dunks.

Anthony Randolph - stay thirsty my friend. Yo will get your turn.

If Pass / Fail Was Good Enough For The Answer Man, It's Good Enough For Shawne Wiliams

Q. vmart - Where are the grades?

A. Grades? We don't need no steenkin' grades!

But since you asked nice...

Felton: A- dig the orange kicks, hate the stupid trade rumors manufactured by lazy beat writers on a deadline
Fields: B+ you still a rookie son, remember what your parents taught you about focus
Gallo: B- move in one more step and take the shot, repeat after me, "I am World B Free, I AM World B Free..."
Amar'e: A you said "the Knicks are back" and backed it up. Lead on bruh!
Mozgov: C+ baggage claim is downstairs and on the left... yes, it's okay to hit back

Who Got Next?

The Mayor B+ "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee... rumble young man, rumble!
DWTDD C+ "you're still a young man, baby, don't waste your time" pounding the ball
Walker C+ you appear to be working hard, stay with your man dude
Turiaf B+ heart and soul cannot be measured with any grade

Pine Brothers

Mason Jr, D as in "damn, can you just make ONE shot before The freakin' New Year?"
Rautins, incomplete, carry a basketball with you everywhere you go and you could be an answer at lead guard in a year
Williams incomplete, stay away from the wrong crowd and stay away from those skeezers waiting at the players entrance

Just win baby

Beat Boston

Let's check in with the guys

Felton: his leadership seems to grow with every game. Double figure assists become the norm.
Fields: some laughed when John Havlicek was mentioned. Those same people are only grinning sheepishly now.
Gallo: love the competitive fire in this young man.
The Mayor: making crisp passes and nominated for Best Supporting Actor
Amar'e:

Who Got Next?

Turiaf: enthusissm, heart and soul. Forget the box score.
DWTDD: slowly learning the offense.
Walker: yo, you got some minutes.
Williams: don't be so shy dude. Keep firing, but love the fact you look for an open man.

Mozgov: stay thirsty my friend

Pine Brothers

Mason Jr: keep working, you still have a job and may be needed later
Rautins: see above

Q. vmart - Where are the grades?

since you asked nice...

Billups: C "Your body's here with me, but yo' mind is on the other side of town..."
Fields: B you still a rookie son, it's a long season
Carmelo: B- adjustments to his game must be made for the team to flourish
Amar'e: A you said "the Knicks are back" and we trusted you. Get some rest, and more ice, for those knees
Center: vacant, INC no one to grade in this position

Who Got Next?

Shawne Williams: B at least he is making a sincere effort on defense
DWTDD B "you're still a young man, baby, don't waste your time" thinking too much, drive it stronger
Turiaf: C productivity fading fast
Jeffries: D+, if it don't show up in the box score I can't use it

Pine Brothers

Walker: incomplete
Mason Jr: C at least you have seen some light
Rautins: get thee to summer league
Derrick Brown: see Rautins above
