Yao Ming a national hero in China.
I have seen many Chinese movies where the guys are american "Thugs" and the hero is native. YOu have too.
Nationalism easy to predict except in this country which is a melting pot.
that's just the problem... this country IS a melting pot, but all of its heroes are portrayed as white for the longest time, & only until recently have African American heroes been portrayed in the mainstream media... all i'm saying is i'd like to see Asian American portrayals progress beyond the typical yakuza/kung fu master/helpless villagers stereotypes in mainstream productions... attitudes & perceptions will never change unless someone makes the moves to change them.
Im not saying its wrong to want Asian heroes, but they do exist! And they exist in all movies made in native lands.American audiences want the same thing they want in china, japan and other countries. We as a country can relate to American sports heroes white or black. Same with actors.
whereas "We as a country" can't relate to Asian heroes? you're making no sense here... so as far as you're concerned, the fact that Asian heroes exist in Asian countries should appease my apparent need to have Asian heroes depicted in movies here in the States? that makes absolutely zero sense... sorry, but i live here in the States... if you have a problem with how white people are portrayed in Asian movies, feel free to make a thread about it.
What is the sterotype Asian in this country? Computer geek? Why, cuz they are book smart and introverted. Is there any degree of truth that Asian families that immigrate here have a different value system then other "americans"?
Is there any truth that parents who have little or no education make a priority that the children all study to assimilate and do well? Is there any truth that Asian family values take pride in every member and each help each other out to achieve? American family values mimic american values with is the "pioneer spirit" of going it alone and individually take glory. Ever hear an amerian family feel shame? Mostly an asian family will feel shame for the failure of a member.
In this background are individual HEROES created? Most heroes are lone wolves, go at it alone, defy the establishment, and are wreckless. These are not traits found in most Asians LIving in America. IN Asian movies the heroes are leaders of men!!! Leaders of like kind men who share the same commmitment to some sacred value.
Its offensive to portray ethnic groups in stereotype images but its done with many. Jews, Arabs, French, etc are all extreme. Its the Movies!
for the record, my dad was an accomplished journalist in Korea & my mom was a registered nurse when they came to this country, so your assumption that Asian families typically stress education in their children in this country because the parents are uneducated is completely false & without any basis... in fact, most of my Asian friends' parents all are well educated with university degrees, many of whom have doctorates in their chosen fields... the importance Asian families place on education has absolutely nothing to do with parents being uneducated in this country... that assumption is just another negative stereotype you have been spoonfed by the media... the same holds true overseas... it's an intensely competitive environment you grow up in Asian society... only the cream of the crop gets a chance to even attend the good universities in Korea... children study all their lives in order to do well on their national tests, parents enroll them in after school learning institutes & pay out thousands of dollars just to try & gain a little edge over the other kids in preparation for these tests... the national tests & where each individual student gets ranked determines whether their kids will be accepted to the best colleges... it's like the SAT but on steroids... many times that one test will make or break your life's future over there, whereas here in the States, you can still make bank & get ahead even if you don't go to college at all... there is a completely different value system when it comes to education that you have no idea about... THAT'S why Asian families place so much value on education... not because we're all a buncha rice farmers with no education & we want our kids to have something more.
as to your other questions, yes there is truth that Asians take pride in every member & help each other to achieve, but so do other nationalities... there are dysfunctional Asian families out there just like there are in every culture as well... there's always the good & the bad... to only portray 1 aspect of a culture is limiting the scope of what the public can percieve an ethnic group's traits to be... that limits their ability to understand the beauty of diversity in this country... diversity is what this country is supposed to be built upon is it not? is it wrong to want that diversity to be accurately portrayed in the movies? i don't think so.
no one said that positive stereotypes in different nationalities should not be portrayed, but there shouldn't be just 1 stereotype, because there are many levels of diversity WITHIN every ethnic group & race in this country, & people need to be educated about that diversity & not just spoon fed the same old tired images all the time.
