ATLANTA - Nate Robinson's agent wasn't aware that his smallest client had been benched against the Orlando Magic until receiving a phone call late Wednesday night from his biggest client."Dwight Howard called me after the game and said, 'I can't believe Nate didn't play,'" Aaron Goodwin said Thursday. "I was just disappointed because I think he deserves a chance to play."
Whether Robinson is rescued from the Knicks bench for Friday's game against the Hawks remains to be seen. Nate-Gate entered Day 2 with Mike D'Antoni telling reporters that he would likely meet with Robinson before or after this morning's shootaround. D'Antoni, upset over Robinson's preparation, focus and general behavior, handed the backup guard his first DNP in nearly two years and made no promises that Robinson will be in the rotation tonight.
"We'll talk," D'Antoni said following Thursday's practice at Georgia Tech. "It's a fluid situation. I'm going to play the eight or nine best guys that I think will be able to get us a win that night."
The lineup D'Antoni used on Wednesday did little to prevent Orlando from a 118-104 victory. Three days earlier, Robinson scored 22 fourth-quarter points in a home loss to the Magic.
"At the end of the day Mike's the coach, but you'd think that if they're trying to win games Nate would play," Goodwin said over the telephone. "He still plays hard and helps this team win."
Goodwin is in town on other business, but in light of Wednesday's events he decided to meet with Robinson yesterday. He says he also spoke by phone with Knicks president Donnie Walsh.
"I have the utmost respect for Donnie," he said. "I want this to work out for everybody. I've spoken to Nate and he'll do whatever Mike deems necessary to ensure that he has an opportunity to play and help the team win."
