I think code kind of hit in on the nail. There was no proclaimation of awsomeness.

I have read stories of guys getting harrased in NYC cuz they are black. Thought I'd do nothing more than share what happened that morning to me.

Some of y'all really are looking to jump on some issues. ANd no, I don't have the "black experience" thing down.

Here is where I come from......

When I 9 I got my bike stolen from me by two black teens who put a knife to my throat. That hurt my pride. Can't say it did much for my racial profiling experience. At 14 I got jumped and my wallet removed from me. The larger three black teens had authority over me and when I got mad they kicked the **** out of me. At 16 I walked into the house and two black guys are walking out with my moms jewlery (not riches of gold and diamonds but her mothers stuff, grandmas stuff, lockets of memories and memories of loved ones they stole her memories.)and the Sony Color tv. I was angry but the gun pointed at me kind of chilled me very quickly and they said be cool or someone will be back. Now I never had any white people do this kind of stuff.

To balance this was my black basketball teammates and friends who were not black, not white, just friends. So I got this race thing down pretty good. There are good guys and bad guys.

BUt I don't hear too much there are good cops and bad cops. So I digress into a discussion.

In Soviet Russia and Mexico I was profiled and perhaps my experience taught me to diffuse the situation and you win by not losing any more. There are good people and bad people.
I didn't have to travel there but I wanted to. Did I have any rights then? Maybe we need to look at human rights not just black vs. white. I do. But thats my experience, not most.

And Maybe we can ask GAtes the same question as to why he was not smart enough to just be cool and diffuse the situation so he could go to bed early after a long flight? Would have that been just better?

What you said is right, but this all is not about who did the crime, but about excuses...
All this black guys you motioned are criminals because of history of slavery and segregation in US which resulted in poverty and crime in inner cities. Right?
So they have a good excuse for all that. And white criminals have no excuses. Are they looking for some?
The Law treats all people equal... but it looks like it is more harsh to blacks... because they have an excuse. Right?

I was called naive by a certain poster, but this whole thread reeks of naivete at best if one thinks that your response to the officer and Gates' response should operate on equal ground..

If you want to be straight up, though, you have to understand that white supremacy is a concrete American reality. That means that this society functions (not necessarily intentionally) as anti-black in general (no, Obama doesn't really change this, statistics remain much the same.) You can find race in most things because race has historically been involved in every, single facet of American society, and for blacks, whose case has been absolutely unique, it's played a very particular role. There is no aspect of American life in which racism does not currently operate to disadvantage blacks. Because black people live through this on a daily basis, many are far more aware. To the white world, it's mostly invisible, because the operations that aid white supremacy aren't necessarily things that white people see on an everyday basis in real life.

I know that you are an elderly man, so when you where 9 and 14 America was even more racially divided then it is today. Reguardless of that, Nalod let me ask you a question. My shift tab doesn't work which is why I can't really use question marks or parenthesis. Do you believe that you were targeted by those African Americans in those instances because you were white.

Also why is Gates the only one to assume responsibility for that incident. Why does the cop not need to assume any responsibility. He did not handle the situation the best that he could have as well yet he is supposed to be more trained and experienced in dealing with those types of situations then Gates since he is a police officer. Also why should Gates not stand up for something he believed in. Its worth the trouble if it somehow provokes positive change and bring issues that need to be addressed to light.

The daily interaction between cops and African Americans is an issue that needs to be looked into. Of course people who aren't African American or cops who heavily go through these day to day interactions are not going to be able to relate to these issues. Which is why a lot of these opinions don't hold much weight.

I have been a thin black male my whole life. It would be like me trying to give my opinion on obese white females and the issues they go through on a day to day basis.

Elderly? We talking early 1970s in brooklyn and queens. Yeah I think they took from me cuz I was white. I think at 14 they wanted more than my money.

I grew up in part with a single parent and was never taught to disrespect anyone, but I was more afraid of many of the black kids cuz they were pissed off most of the time.

Why blame gates? I think it was on him to diffuse the situation. And I think they BOTH over reacted in total. The cop over reacted to Gates over reation. Bottom line Gates didn't get to be early and the cop drove his ego into a **** storm. Nobody won. But nobody really got hurt either.

If you believe that Law in US is in general unfair to some people why are you here?
There is no restriction to pack your bags and go anywhere else where the Law is fair to everybody.
Why to leave in racist undemocratic police country like US?

The history of any nation is absolutely unique.
A lot of people faced and are facing oppression in the world. Some in the scale more the African American and some less.
My point is that history cannot be used like an excuse for any nation or group of committing crimes and leave a ****ty live.
Every man responsible for his actions and his live today and now. We can explain what he is doing by looking on his heritage but it has nothing to do with his responsibilities.

I also believe they got you because you were white. Not *just* because you were white, but there decision to execute those crimes against you were heighten by the fact that you were white. I believe the same thing goes on with police officers and blacks at times. Why white people are so adamant at believing these things don't happen I don't know.

Gates felt disrespected by the cop. He felt the cop treated him as a criminal before he found the facts, because he was black. He felt if he was a white man the cop would have treated him differently. You agree or not that is how Gates felt, he felt he was wronged. I don't expect the person who felt that they were wronged to be the one to defuse the situation. The cop could have easily defused the situation himself by staying calm, giving his name and badge number to Gates then explained himself at a later date when Gates filed a complaint which probably wouldn't have been taken seriously anyway. Instead he looked to add flames to the fire.

NY,

YOu making a lot of assumptions. According to the cop, he did give his name but gates was yelling. In any event at that point the cop felt one of two things, he gotta make sure there is not crime being done cuz if he just brushes the whole thing off, and the real mr. gates comes home the next day to an empty house the cop if really on the hook.

ANd if at that moment the cop is still doing it by the book, he felt disrespected by Gates. So like I said its just one over reation to another and its getting out of hand. SO what is the first "Disrespect"? Gates is the Harvard professor and the brighter of the two. The cop had some training, and teaches it, but Gates is the bigger man here and he failed to take control of the situation. Any truth to the comment about him yelling "yo momma" back at the cop really degrades his status of respect and perhaps the cop is thinking "nutjob". Gates become "George Jefferson" all of a sudden?

Fair enough to I got hit cuz I was white, but not just for it is fair. The white kids have better bikes, the white kids don't fight back, the white kids get scared. The white kids left the city cuz the white parents were tired of getting robbed. It ain't fair, just was. Real estate values drop and there went "the neighborhood". Typical White flight. Yeah, we wuz scared.

Crime victims either perpetrated by bad guys or bad cops still strip dignity. I have collegues and friends that are nasty racist *******s about it and some of it is based on experience. Same for victims by police, same for blacks from white and white from blacks.

White supremecy? I don't think it exists anymore, but racism does. Its natural as the color of our skins.

It is not about black and white it is about people bind together.
American whites are all alone. They are relying one the power of Law not on any bond with each other.
For the same reason Latino and Asian emigrants of the new wave will make whites and blacks run.
But later they will become like us and somebody else will come. This is the natural way it goes.

So the belief is that racial profiling is due to the high crime rates committed by blacks. So in theory, in order to reduce racial profiling we would need to reduce the amount of crimes that blacks commit. So the question becomes, why are blacks committing so many crimes. The answer that seems to be the norm among whites according to the arguments on this board are that blacks commit crime for no other reason then because we are black. That our blackness alone causes us to commit crimes. Which is a flat out joke and embarrassing. Of course Nalod did state that there are good guy and there are bad guys. But if you go by the amount of blacks in prison and the statistics. Using that logic tells me that there are an astronomical # of blacks by chance who just to be bad guys.

Me personally, I believe in cause and effect. For every action there is an positive or negative reaction. The truth is that guns, drugs, liquor stores have flooded poverty stricken communities which in most cases are filled with minorities. Yet the schools don't get the support of funding they need, dealing with out of date books and under qualified teachers. And the funding they do get gets a chunk taken off of it by the crooked majors and governors. If I told you I wanted to conduct and experiment of flooding streets of with guns, high potent drugs, liquor stores then load up on police officers. While turning my back on the education system. What do you think the outcome would be of that experiment? Guns, Drugs, Liquor stores do not enter communities in America without the government allowing it to happen. I think that makes more sense then blacks committing crimes only because of there blackness.

Now if they did/do what they did/do because of race I'm not arguing that at this time. But the government allows this to happen because when it comes to poverty the government profits off the peoples pain of poverty through the negative. While on the other side they profit of the pleasure of the wealthy through the positive.

Obviously the plan they have in place of throwing African Americans in jail since they commit the most crime hasn't been working for the decades they have been doing it for. If they really wanted to reduce the crime rate then they would be reducing the amount of guns, drugs and liquor stores that infiltrated these communities while at the same time targeting the schooling system. They say they are yet always seem to fail. Throwing people of poverty in jail is the band aid mentality. Locking drug dealers is not going to reduce the rate of drug offenses. Shutting down the supply will. Locking up a man who has committed homicide isn't going to reduce the rate of homicide. Cutting the supply of guns will. Not saying they should not lock up people who commit crimes, but its obviously not fixing anything. If we really lived in a time of equality where race is no longer an issue then that would be the line of thinking.

dude, I didn't even read the rest of your post. No way that what I bolded has occurred, not that I have come across. If so, you had better find it and quote it.

My point is that as easily as you could put blame on Gates you could put blame on the cop. We could go back and for all day breaking down this situation again and again but at the end of the day we weren't there we can only go by the he said she said. Which is why I don't understand how you can just come to the conclusions that you have come to with this thread. Gates has also denied he said anything about his momma. So coming to strong conclusions like you have if you meant to do it or not is only showing bias.

Also my point is that regardless of the Gates situation he does have a point of cops treating of African Americans. If the cop did do that to him or not. At the end of the day there are tons of instances where African Americans are treated like they are guilty before being proven innocent. Its an issue that needs to be looked at.

Also if you are profiled and treated guilty until proven innocent then you should have every right to be upset with the officer. Not saying this is what happen with Gates but just my opinion.

i don't want to put words into Nalods posts, but I think if you ask him if a white Harvard prof was found in the same incident as Gates but with a black cop, his answer to you would have been the same as above.

Nalod made a simple point, he was pulled over and acted like a gentlemen. The officer in question showed discretion. He simply asserted that if Gates had conducted himself in a similar manner than the outcome would have been different. I dont see how anybody oould disagree with this, and if they do I dont understand why it would bring out this venomous anger out of some people.
