Let me ask you this. How bad do we look if we let Lee walk, and then soon after, we trade Curry for T-Mac. The reason people here don't want Lee is b/c of Curry.

Giving us room for 2 max FA's and a guy like Nash? I'd survive.

And what if we got none of that?

If I was Donnie Walsh and Jimmy Dolan, I would arrange to sign a smaller contract with Lee and then pay him extra money off the books so that he can get the $ he wants but also stay in NYK and keep us under the cap. I am really surprised more teams don't do this. I know it is probably illegal, but how hard could it be to pull off?? This is the type of move we need from DW to shake things up.

You can keep playing that game as long as you'd like. What if we don't get LeBron? What if we don't get any of the other top FA's? What if we can't sign comparable talents like Tyson Chandler? What if no FA's sign with us at all? What if we can't put enough guys out on the court and have to forfeit the season?

We'll be in GREAT position with that much cap room. I think Nash would be almost a sure fire sign, and I think he and D'Antoni alone would draw in some of the top talent. Like I said, I love Lee, and losing him would suck, but it's not a blow we can't take. Moving Curry afterwards is irrelevant to what happens to Lee - it helps us either way.

The hardest blow to take isn't that Lee is leaving-- it's that, if this article is true, he will walk and the Knicks will have nothing to show for a player that, at the last trade-deadline, had a TON of value.

I do wonder what offers were out there for Lee and if the warning to Memphis last year scared away any possible suitors. I'm not using this as an excuse or suggesting there weren't offers available, just thinking out loud here.

TMS, I absolutely agree that losing Lee for nothing would be a mistake, but I'm not fearing our position too much as of yet. I'm not convinced a team (that Lee actually wants to go to) will make an offer to far out of Walsh's price range. Even then, there's still ample amount of time to work a sign and trade. I guess we'll find out very soon.

i'm not saying that losing D Lee for nothing will bring doom & gloom onto the Knicks franchise, just saying it was a big blunder in terms of GM maneuvering on Walsh's part (if it goes down like that)... i think Jordan Hill will definitely make people forget about losing D Lee in due time, but u have to expect some kind of dropoff in production there this season... i'm still holding out hope that Donnie's got something up his sleeve w/Lee's S&T tho.

I don't think Walsh is stupid enough to let a very good homegrown player walk unless he has an idea of what he's going to be able to get in 2010.

And so far all his moves have led me to believe that we're going to be getting a very good player then.

why not offer lee a deal for around 5 yrs/40 million starting at about 6.5 millioon the first year and then put in an opt-out clause after year 2 of the contract which would be the 2011 offseason. We can tell Lee to opt-out of the contract and then we can resign him to a slightly bigger contract in the 5 yr/55 million dollar range for doing us a favor with the initial contract.

Now if we can trade him for picks/young player in their rookie contracts, id be all for that. But if you could get lee at a cheap price these next two years, and then overpay him a bit after 2010, id think it would be well worth it considering we'd be over the cap for the next 4-5 years after 2010 anyway.

I don't see why everyone is thinking we will let him walk, regardless of what the article says. It's one article and who knows if it's true or smoke and mirrors. We will have 7 days to match and look for S&T possibilities. (Even if Lee doesn't agree we could find interest for after signing him.) edit - Question - If we match an offer to Lee, how long do we have to wait before trading him? I mean can we match an offer on the 9th and then S&T him to Toronto a week later?

We match all offers. Then if that amount cuts too deep into our 2010 plans we trade him at some point during the season for an expiring and pick (at least for something of value). (If you have to you involve him more in the offense and inflate his value a bit more).

I just can't see management letting him walk for nothing, UNLESS they know Lebron is coming.

Read some of this thread and I feel like I just walked into a gay bar...

David Lee is not Elvin Hayes...He's not Bob Petit...He's not Dolph Schayes...He's not Karl Malone...He's not Barkley...He's not an all-nba power fwd...

He's not even Charles Oakley....there was life after Oakley, btw...

If he is gone...get over it...Knicks save money by not signing him to a stupid contract. There are bigger fish to fry.

Crazy... Now david le is ogd and we're lost without him.

Comon guys, if he gets 10 millions, we'd all kill DW cause he ain't worth it.

I'm sorry, I love lee but at the right price tag. I hate seeing him get burnt again and again and again every single game. It's just plain useless to score 2 and get scored 2 right after. I just can't stand it, and it applies to Nate.

Now before the sky falls on us, remember WE ARE IN CONTROL. We can match or we can let him go.
Let's wait for the offer to come before crying.

Apparently we just offered Lee 4 years 32M - take it or go sign an offer sheet.

Line Of The Day

"Read some of this thread and I feel like I just walked into a gay bar..."

EnySpree is dead on. There are much bigger fish to fry than David Lee. David Lee is not Gus johnson... he is not Dave DeBussschere... he is not Lonnie Shelton... he is not even George McGinnis or Dave Stallworth... okay, so maybe he is Truck Robinson.

So let me get this straight the Knicks won 9 more games because MDA was the coach. Lee stats were inflated because of MDA but Lee being a bad defensive player and the Knicks being gross is the players fault and not MDA. There is a reason why MDA didnt win in Phoenix
MDA didnt win in Phoenix? Yea... and Lee didnt win in Florida and there's a reason for that also. I guess the Gators just needed Lee to move on so they could win a couple of titles eh?

I like and have always liked Lee. But you have to look at where the Knicks are and what makes sense. Lee is not a good value at $9-$10mm for the Knicks. He just isnt. I also think MDA soured on him a bit late in the season. Several times I saw the coach throw his hands up in disgust when Lee clearly missed a defensive assignment or simply didnt defend his man. It got to the point where he was a liability late in games.

I hope he comes back with a reasonable (and tradable) contract. But if the Thunder want to pay him $10mm than he and his girlfriend can enjoy all the excitement Oklahoma City has to offer.

What the Knicks will miss most is Lee's passing

A team source claims the Knicks will offer Lee a four-year deal worth $32 million, which is below his asking price of $10 million per season. The Knicks have the right to match any offer given to Lee, as well as Robinson, but the club wants to remain fiscally responsible as it pertains to the summer of 2010.

Take this to the bank and lock it in. If we lose David Lee we will win 25 games next year--bank it.

We won 23 games twice with him so that's not saying much.

You mean 'at least 25 games'. I'll put out my own prediction. If we lose Lee our starting PF will average a double double.
