Well I went to the Dr. in May and learned my cholesterol was above 300 points - family history of it being high and mine jumped 100 points in 2 years. So I decided to get healthy and I am also on a statin.

Diet wise I cut out a lot of cheese, still have it on occasion but not often. Cut out butter, cook with only olive oil. Eat vegetarian meals, meat wise I stick to chicken and turkey, red meat only once in a while and I try to get as many fruits and veggies in as I can. Limit eating out to twice per week, usually one lunch and one dinner. Allow myself to have things I want if I have been good for a week - so when I go out I usually eat what I want within reason and dont worry about it. I also dont drink a lot of alcohol and I make sure I am getting at least 8 cups of water per day.

Exercise wise - I have a courier job right now since I just graduated from business school and cant land a serious gig - I walk 1-2 miles during the day and then I hit the gym 4 days a week. I do 30 minutes of cardio on a regular basis during these 4 days, try to make 2 days running and the other two low impact cardio. I lift weights usually once per week and sometimes twice - just do a circuit and dont lift heavy, just trying to keep muscles and not lose too much. I do about 30 pullups with the weight assist set at 80 lbs, do 40 crunches, 40 leg lifts. Stay at the gym for about an hour.

I wouldnt say my program is anything special, its just trying to eat healthy and get exercise - not overdoing it so it has been easy to follow and maintain. From time to time I slip and eat bad but I get back on track and have had some great success. My cholesterol is down to 134 and the 20 lbs weight loss has me feeling great. I would like to get to 200 and maintain it and at that weight I might be able to get off the statins.

Eh to you it's nothing special, but if it helped you lose 20 lbs, then it's obviously a good plan. Keep up the good work.

Can you explain statin though? Is that a type of med?

A statin is a cholesterol lowering medication - Lipitor is the most well known but there is Zocor (generic simvastatin), and a few others. It prevents your liver from producing too much cholesterol.

The idea being that lower cholesterol lowers your risk of heart attack and stroke.

I agree - it may not sound like a special diet/exercise routine but it has shaved 20 lbs off so it is working. The willpower part is the most important as you know. You just have to make good choices with food and make sure you are getting exercise. Don't let your body get too used to a routine, you need to switch it up once in a while. Also allow your body to rest when it is sore, and every once in a while take a week off and just do walking or something so your body can heal up.

I also think the walking during the day combined with the gym at night and the diet is a pretty awesome combination for losing weight and getting fit.

Are there any side effects to that drug and is it expensive? I honstly have no clue what my cholesterol level is right now. I don't think I've ever had it measured either, which is probably pretty stupid.

Good luck though. Post your updates on here! We'll soon both be 200 lbs!

There can be side effects - you need to have blood tests to measure liver function every 6 months and some people get muscle aches etc. I had a little when I started but have none now.

You should go to the dr. and get your cholesterol checked - they usually do it when you get a physical. If you dont have a family history of it being high you are probably ok - just make sure you eat right and exercise and you should be set. I definitely recommend getting it tested though.

No, you've succeeded in modifying for your lifestyle for the better. That's built for the long haul and that what's special--so give yourself some credit.

As for the walking on top of the gym, yes, that is a great combination for weightloss. Japanese researcher said by taking 10,000 steps a day, you maintain your current weight. Some researchers say it may actually be as low as 2,000... the point is exercising on top of walking means the exercise goes right to weight loss whereas if you didn't walk some of that exertion would go towards maintaining your weight. If you're interested in how many steps you take throughout your day you can go to Sports Authority and buy a pretty cheap pedometer (I wouldn't recommend living by the thing, just to use it every few months to monitor your activity).

I actually got a free one a couple months ago and I get about 10,000 on a busy day and 2,000 on a slow so pretty good. I really like the walking because it is low impact and you can just do short bursts at a time - they add up throughout the day.

The diet is the harder part - that is why I still allow myself the fun stuff :-)

Yeah, I gained 3 lbs this week. No excuse. I just went off b/c my sister was back and that led to a bad weekend. No excuse though. Back on track now.

Hit 210 this week...10 more lbs to go to hit my goal

I guess I will reassess when I hit 200 whether or not I can maintain that or if I should try to go lower. I feel like I have been taking steady weight off, about 2 lbs per week, and it has not been too hard to cut out certain things from my diet. I am wondering if/when I will hit a wall. Last year I got stuck at 215 and couldn't seem to get below it so I am definitely doing better now and feel I will hit 200.

^You're all wrong on the cycling.

Biking is fun because you go fast, go far, and you get a fun work out. Try sprinting up some hills and then you coast and sprint another hill. It's so awesome.

And you can ride through traffic and it's like an adventure.

How is that working out for you?

Just wanted to let everyone know. The precore machine is sooooo much better than the elyptical. My legs feel like rubber bands every time I finish using it, and I burn more calories too.

Bip, why you getting so skinny on us?

I ruptured my achilles a while back. The doctor asked me if I was having problems before this. I said I was having problems with my knees and ankles but not my heal. He took a look at me, and said

"The problem is not with your knees and ankles, it's with your weight".

That's all I needed. The moment they said I was okay to work out I started riding the bike, eating well and walking. My body is the type where I can carry 190-200 without problems. If I worked out, my legs would get thick and I would put on weight and noone would notice. But as I get older, I don't work out as much and my metabolism has changed. Now the weight has gone to my stomach and arse. I can't carry the weight like I used to. So my goal is to get down to around 165(not a natural weight for me, but the proper weight for my height) and then see what type of diet I need to keep to maintain that weight. I won't be the same physical speciman on the basketball court, but I will probably live longer and walk better in my old age.

Plus, no matter what weight I am, I can still stick a 30 footer in your face.

I agree about the precor by the way. Easier on the knees and ankles too.

man, I have the opposite body type - slight frame at 5'11"+. I hover at 168 and if I get up to 172 I am bloated and slow.

Nice job regardless. Do you do a lot of weight lifting too?

Oasis, nice job again. You clearly did better last week than me, not that it's a race.

Some of you should seriously consider going online and buying the aforementioned X-Zylo. Once you learn how to throw it good, it's a really good workout because all you're doing is sprinting in order to catch the thing and you frequently have to sprint long distances because as I said, it's unpredictable at times.

It's fun as hell though.

I lift 3 times a week. Very light stuff, more to burn fat then build muscle.

My workout is 20 minutes of serious stretching, 20 minutes on a bike/precor/walking and 20 minutes of high intensity low weight lifting. I take 30 second breaks in between sets. My breaks are ab only breaks. On off days I am going to run when I'm fully healed. Now I walk.
