Yet, Larry wanted to trade Ariza for Steve Francis because he was Larry's answer to Marbury.

LB has been in the league for decades. How many times has he been responsible for a trade like that and how many for Isiah? At least credit Brown for knowing we needed to get rid of Marbury.

Actually Brown is the same guy who wanted to trade while in San Antonio David Robinson, while in Indiana, Reggie Miller, while in Philly, Allen Iverson, while in Detroit, Chauncey Billups. I think you may want to rephrase that question. Generally when Brown come with a trade request you just shake your head and throw it in the garbage. I pretty sure many of those Bobcat Curry trade request had a legit source.

Phar, I'm not sure I buy all those rumors. The only one I do is Iverson. Any coach worth his salt would have been knocking heads with Ivy in those early years, and we see post-Brown he's constantly in play and having a harder time to find a home.

Brown struggled with Robinson's lassitude. Did David to be in the Navy, an concert pianist or a basketball player? As we all know, Robinson had HOF potential, which he ultimately fulfilled on, but Brown knew he wasn't giving near as much as he could. So, did he really want him traded (and for who, Hakeem?) or did he use that as leverage to get through to him?

Never heard of him wanting to trade Miller, and I really doubt he would. Reggie was the hardest working man in show biz in the Brown years. And FYI, Reggie is as big a BRown fan as they come. When the Knicks got LB and not Phil Reggie was on TNT assuring us we got the best coach in the NBA, bar none. "No contest," he said

The business about Chauncey is equally murky. I read one, and only one report (from a journalist, not a first hand account) that accused Brown of wanting to trade one of Detroit's starting 5. Since then I've seen posters of taking their pick for who it might have been. (My own guess would be the inconsistent, weed smoking, tech generating, Sheed.) And, even if the report is true, again what was the context, did he really want the player gone, or was it used as leverage to get the player to conform?

I'm not saying I know your statements to be false, I'm just saying a lot of hearsay gets thrown about without documentation. If you've got anything concrete to back up these assertions I'd like to see it.

Brown all but admitted to the Reggie Miller trade request but all you have to do is ask the man running the show now at MSG and he is willing to go into a bit of detail about those strange request from Brown as he told NY media on his hire when asking if he can deal with Dolan since Brown couldn't. Brown indeed asked for a Robinson trade which got him fired immediately. Brown stormed into Dumar's office after the NBA finals and demanded that Billups, the Finals MVP be traded because Brown was so tired of his horrible shot selection. Dumars was caught off guard but told Brown no. This continue to be an issue with Brown and Dumars the following season which led Brown into talking fondly about coming back home to NY and all those nice rumors. We all know how that worked out. Danny Manning btw, the guy he talked so much about during his career, wanted to be traded from the Clippers as soon as he learned that his former college coach would be joining him. It goes both ways with Brown, there are those who say great things and others who you thought would say negative.
I am not sure if any of Brown blowups are really murky. Just some people refused to believe that such a quality coach would have this type of issue.

Huh??...If I remember correctly, Brown was the guy who went to the media and began speaking about the construction of the team...He was the guy who went to the media and questioned the intelligence of the players and the schools they attended...

Brown got treated like a rook because he disrespected himself and his players...

I don't know what this is in response to, but coaches are required to speak to the media after every game, and everything he said was true.

Earlier this season I was posting/laughing that the stuff D'Antoni was saying was just as bad, if not worse than LB. For instance, Eddy's throwing up was good for losing weight. And can you imagine what he'd be saying about not having a head out there if he didn't have Duhon running the show?

Thick skulled players need to be challenged, why do you take such offense to that? Are you still of the mind that Isiah put together a roster for the future that only needed a good coach to reveal their greatness, and coach after coach fails the team because they are driven by a sordid personal agenda?

Free Steph! Free Isiah! Free Eddy!

Pointing the finger at Brown is weak. Personally, I would have given him at least 2-3 years and allowed him to participate in personnel decisions, like any coach should. At the same time, I would have been okay with his firing if Isiah and Marbury went with him.

Brown landed in a dysfunctional cesspool and tried to purge the mess. If he was supported by management he might have made some headway. Instead management increased the turbulence, insuring failure. Then management got its chance to get pulled under by the same mess they created.

Ultimately, Brown is a damn good coach. If management works with him he offers you as much a chance to win as any coach in the game. If you're Isiah, you get 23 wins with him or without him.

I think we all can agree that Michael Jordan is a horrible executive, but even he was smart enough to let Larry partake in the the roster decisions. It doesn't take a genius.

I don't know. There is a reason why Brown is known as the Nomad Coach. Sebstar hit the nail on the head, he is a very good coach but has similar issues like a T.O. that interfere with his ability to stay focus. He falls in and out of love with his players so quickly. His only championship team didn't care if he came back or not. The only called him a "bad" man. I give it another season and we see what will happen. Like I said Bobcats are very lucky that Curry has been injured so far this season. Because it could have been ugly for them.

Aside from the Ariza building up talk (and I still don't get it) I am very happy for Larry. Redemption has it's day.

And with 19 wins, just over the halfway point of the season, he's proving that he's just as good a coach as he was before he went to NY and ended up with only 23 wins. But isiah also ended up with 23 wins. So it wasn't the coaching of Larry that was poor. 'It was the team isiah put together that was poor'.

Blue, you choose to argue the same arguments again, as opposed to the underlying pop cultural dynamics of the failed LB experiment? Why God, why?

It was certainly the coaching of Larry that was poor here. We certainly did have a bad team but he did a miserable job from player relations to Xs and Os. SOme believe it was intentional on his part and he just wasn't coaching like he could but rather trying to play politics. He's doing a good job there, but he really, really sandbagged it in NY.

Phar you beat me to it. I'll admitt, I dont remember the Reggie Miller trade request, but I do remember the Billups article where Brown wanted to trade him while his MVP trophy was still warm. I also remember Danny Manning, who just won a championship with brown at Kansas, didn't want him as a coach in the NBA......Excellent post Phar. But I'm sure the Larry lovers will want proof...IE,the actual article, a still photo of Brown talking to Dumars about Billups, Audio, Video, Fingers prints of him on the scene and an affidavit with LBs sig....and still they will dismiss it and defend him.

Do me a favor and post this stuff for my own edification. I've googled arond looking for Brown wanting to trade Billups, Robinson, Miller, etc, and come up empty. Stuff like Robinson and Miller I can understand since articles weren't posted on the net back then, but this Billups stuff is recent history. It shouldn't be hard.

I also remember Danny Manning, who just won a championship with brown at Kansas, didn't want him as a coach in the NBA......Excellent post Phar.

Danny Manny was a soft ass p/ussy with HOF talent. He was the face and leader of a soft ass Clippers team. I'm not surprised Manning was a cry baby for being coached hard.

The stark reality is that Brown will take on his franchise players in exactly the same way as he does 2nd round scrubs. There are guys who want it that way. Duncan asked Pops to treat him like Parker and everyone else. After Brown, Ben Wallace told Chicago before signing that he preferred a hrad style of coaching and made it a prerequisite to signing. Guys like Ewing and Malone loved to be coached hard by Riley and Sloan respectively.

And then you have guys you can't get through to, like Marbury and Iverson, who in spite of HOF talent are now journeymen in the league. Yes, Brown and Miller clashed heads over his role, but ask Reggie what he thinks of Brown in retropsect. Ditto David Robinson, Mo Ckeeks, Billups, etc. Brown is willing to get ugly with his players, but its not personal, its about buying intot the team concept and fulfilling potential. Are you surprised that some little bitch boys get upset when their superstardom is challenged? Do you want the coach to cater to their whineyness? Do you think spoiled little 19 year olds like Carmelo know more about winning basketball than legendary coaches?

But I'm sure the Larry lovers will want proof...IE,the actual article, a still photo of Brown talking to Dumars about Billups, Audio, Video, Fingers prints of him on the scene and an affidavit with LBs sig....and still they will dismiss it and defend him.

yes, I defend Brown for knowing how to win.

Read at least page 1 of this three page article. It's written in the regular season of 2001, the year Philly went to the finals. It tells how Iverson got the wakeup call when Philly actually started to shop him. He finally got that the team needed him to to take his leadership seriously, and he did. And that's when they made headway and peaked.

But you guys don't care if LB got through to him and they were successful before it, you care that they didn't like him, or that his methods are too harsh. You want someone warm and fuzzy who the players will like because he puts them above himself and the team. But when does that sheet win?

T.O. is an excellent comparison. Both have talent for greatness but have some real issues going on. I am not sure if it is not enough love or just a need to be a diva and the center of attention but it seems to effect them both the same way. Nice sebstar.

Good lookin Phar, appreciate it. I think the comparison is apt and the parallels are striking. Only difference between the two is perception. Every stop Larry has made has been met with considerable dysfunction; yet some just want to concentrate on his ability as a coach to shield and cover for his moral ambiguity. For T.O, even though he is a hall of fame player and has been successful at every stop, all people talk about is his ego and his destroyed relationships.
