David Lee is averaging 18.1 points 14.5 rebounds and shooting 62% in the 9 games since the trade

what are those numbers worth in the NBA? Certainly it's worth 11- 12mm a year. Unless he is injured--does anyone think his production will magically stop--the guy is very consistent tough and smart.
its a great 9 game stretch. NBA GMs give $70mm contracts on 9 games? (Isiah aside).

Lee is OK4 now? Are you for real? Lee has no defensive pressense what so ever and anyone scouting the Knicks can see those numbers are inflated by minutes and the pace the Knicks play. Lee also has durability issues and is usually outplayed by opposing PFs which is why he was benched for Wilson Chandler before the trade.

I have yet to see anything to tell me the Knicks are not in the drivers seat.

fishmike--you are living in a fantasy world David Lee is not coming back to the Knicks for 6-7mm hes going to be paid 10+mm whether you believe it or not--Knicks Grizzlies Bulls Blazers or whatever team --come back to this post in the summer. The only card the Knicks have is they can match any offer. That is the only control they have.

This is starting to remind me of your posts where you said Palin would carry the GOP to a double digit victory. Or Curry would be a franchise player. You may not realize it, but you tend to drastically overstate numbers.

Briggs, I think nysportsfan11 is correct that the cap number is not 100% about the formula. See the 2005-06 season when the league and players associated agreed on a cap number that was different.

If revenues drop dramatically--you will see a much lower cap number--take it to the bank.

And if it dropped that low, you can guarantee David Lee will not be making $10 mil a year. There is not anyone who can make a valid case that he should be 20% of a team's cap.

A lot of stuff can happen over the course of two years. Why are we always predicting our own doom. This summer we were never going to be able to get rid of Zach and Jamal. Now we are going to let David Lee walk. Now Gallinari is injured forever. Now we are never going to be able to get rid of Curry. A lot can happen. If all I knew about the Knicks was from this site all I would know is that D.Lee and Nate are goners and for nothing, Gallinari is going to die of back pain, Marbs is crazy(everyone knows that), Duhon is a goner, and the only free agent we will sign in 2010 is Antoine Walker.

There are a million D.Lee scenarios that could take place in the next 2 years. Why fret?

david lee is going to get paid - an average of $10 mil a year.

forget system and all that jazz. nobody is able to stop lee from getting his #'s. he does not have the skillset as guys like bosh or amare which is why he won't get the max.

he's an elite nba rebounder. and he's scoring alot of points with efficiency. does it really matter if it's from a post move or not? duhon + lee have been basically unstoppable in the pick and roll this year. he played on the US-select team 2 years ago as well. the league knows about the guy and i think he is wanted by many teams.

he is worth $10 mil a year to the knicks. what he brings is not easily replaceable. whereas guys like chandler are easily replaceable.

If DLee is a 10 mil per year player...What is Josh Smith who is currently making 10 mil per worth? or Anderson Verejao at 6 mil per?...If the Knicks pay DLee 10 mil per yer, it locks out the other potential big name forward that can possibly occupy that spot...So tell me, do you think DLee and LeBron are two guys you can build around to make a run for it...That is really the question...If DLee at your forward spot is not the answer to build a contender, why would the Knicks pay him 10 mil?...The Knicks traded a better player in Zach Randolph that fits this system better...

Holfresh, if you make DLee the starter, then I'm pretty sure that the next step is to either get a shotblocking center that's a stud on the defensive end (Think Thabeet) (And don't ask me who else. I'm not that good at fantasy trades) or go for a guy like Chris Bosh when 2010 hits. A frontcourt of Bosh of Lee is nothing short of excellent.

If that is the case then yeah, I agree but isn't it "Bosh OR Lee" instead of "Bosh AND Lee", if the Knicks was so lucky to land LeBron?...One more point..In building a Championship team, you have to have some players playing above their pay grade...If your players are being paid over their skill level, I think we all have seen how that strategy has turned out all too well...

How about a guy like Paul Millsap who can do what Lee does for 1/4 the cost?...

He is making about $800,000 now and will be a free agent next year...He can be had for less then $3-5mil per...

That's assuming that WE WILL land LeBron, and who's to say we can't land all 3 if we can't dump Eddie Curry. Nothing is guaranteed and just remember, if we don't get Lee AND miss out on a free agent that Summer, than we are REALLY screwed.

There's no right answer though. Lee is playing GREAT and is even improving his defense a little bit and is probably the most important player on this team (If not, he's at least tied with Nate and Duhon). We need him.

Also, if Lee is worth $10 mil a season, then he'd be a great sign and trade chip in 2010. Add Lebron or another star and then Lee + Chandler for Bosh is A LOT better than losing Bosh for nothing if he tells Toronto he's leaving. Heck, Lee alone for Bosh is a lot better than losing Bosh for nothing.

Well if we don't land a player like LeBron, then have to sign Lee,Nate and Duhon to big contracts, we will be pissing in the wind for many years to come...But I don't think Donnie is on that trajectory...

Also, you don't NEED anyone when you are in last place year after year...

josh smith's #'s are impressive. but until last season, he was getting major minutes on one of the worst teams in the league. and last year, they finally make the playoffs with a sub .500 record.

once the knicks get lebron (or whoever their guy is), they will have to spend spend spend to put together a top notch team. just the acquisition of the 2010 guy alone is not making the team elite or a contender. it will still take 2-3 years after that, and 2-3 years of starphuching to make the team a contender. so this whole thing about "building a team around" doesn't really mean anything. the $10 mil being paid to lee will not prevent the knicks from starphuching.

and the only reason zach was dealt was b/c of this pricetag. that $17 mil made lebron unattainable. now he can be had.

To be fair, I think Lee's a double-double guy in any system. That's what Lee is - he's 10pts/10 rebs every night. I just don't know if that necessarily equals $10 mil. a year or more for 5 or 6 yrs. Plenty of guys out there who might be able to do that with the same amount of PT.

10/10? Maybe if he's playing 28 mpg. There are NOT plenty of guys who will give you 15/10 on 55% shooting.
