The NY media has a lot to learn about Donnie Walsh.
how so?
All of this speculation about who he's going to bring in, whether he's going to keep Isiah, etc, which is based on nothing more than who he's "friends" with, who he hired in the past or who he has previous relationships with. That's not how Donnie operates.
and how does he operate?
Unlike the high school girl the media is speculating him to be. Donnie's not Isiah, who won't hire Patrick Ewing because of who his agent (Falk) is or who is friend (Jordan) is.
1. Larry Brown:
Donnie's not Phil Jackson. He's been with the Pacers 22 years and is buddies with Herb Simon. He doesn't need a bargaining chip for a better deal. If he wanted Larry Bird out, all he had to do was say the word. Instead, he wanted to leave. Does anyone really think he'd use the Knicks to get a better deal with the Bucks? As if the Bucks wouldn't already give him what he wants? He doesn't have a score to settle over the Larry Brown fiasco. Larry's friends with a lot of people in the league. If that was the case, no one would work here. Donnie's not George Karl.
2. Keeping Isiah
Donnie giving him his first job has nothing to do with anything. Where was all this loyalty when Bird swooped in and fired Isiah right under Donnie's nose? His reaction was a far cry from the strain Carlisle's departure put on Bird and Walsh's working relationship. Donnie knew he built a talented young team that Isiah basically alienated and couldn't get out of the first round. I have a hard time believing a guy like Donnie would risk getting off on the wrong foot by keeping Isiah on the bench. I'm not saying it definitely can't happen but I strongly doubt it.
3. Dolan's money
Donnie's not going to come in and allow himself to be Dolan's emasculated puppet for the money.
The relationship that the media is severly underestimating and the only one that matters is Donnie's relationship with David Stern. The same David Stern who has been publicly and privately predicting wholesale changes for the Knicks this offseason. If it were all about freezing some ping pong balls he wouldn't be so damn giddy.
