The Frye/Francis for Randolph and extras trade had nothing to do with DNic.

2 completely different trades, so yes, this was a completed wasted transaction.

Martin, it was one deal: http://www.nba.com/transactions/jun2007_transactions.html

"New York acquires Zach Randolph, Fred Jones, Dan Dickau and the draft rights to Demetris Nichols from Portland in exchange for Steve Francis, Channing Frye and a 2008 second-round draft pick."

oohah

Nope, 2 separate transactions that happened on the same night. The above is just a run on sentence. For real.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/teams/transactions?team=nyk

Well my source is the NBA so I think it may be a little more official. Regardless, even if it happened in two short bursts, it was all one night, so that strikes me as one deal, package, etc.

oohah

it's worse oohah, it really is: If Isiah had had the moxie, he would have made Portland INCLUDE the second round #53 pick as part of the Randolph package without giving up a future second rounder.

And let's be nit picky here: just cause it happened in the same night don't make it 1 deal. 2 deals.

Again, I am not certain that it was 2 separate deals: http://hoopshype.com/general_managers/isiah_thomas.htm

And I am not sure that the Blazers would have gone through with the deal you proposed. That "moxie" might have queered the deal.

Something tells me that Nichols was part of the Randolph deal any way it went down. It stands to reason.

look at my post last week. I predicted this... good, I hope he kicks the shyt out of the knicks on friday, right in front of dolan and Isiahs face.. really, I am going to be rooting for this kid to drop 30 with 6 threes!!

That's being too kind how about 50? That's what I'm hoping for.

I am dead serious, I hope lebron drives and kicks, and nichols is just hot as hell... I find it funny, over at real gm, all I hear is how this kid was never going to be a star, but during summer league, all the talk was how legit this kids shot was. Now all of a sudden he is a nobody.. LOL.. hey, I may be a knick homer at times, but I am real bro.... This move stinks. People can treat this like we are cutting walker JR, toby bailey or lavar Postel, but nichols was a real, and legit NBA rookie prospect,I mean he is, and we now hand cleveland a gift... wow......

I hope he's Hot As Fish Grease. I'm not BSing I really do. I want him to accomplish some kind of record by the half, to the point I SAY UGH feels he has to incite another brawl.

You're a different kind of Homer but now you now the kind of characters we've been dealing with. Quite a few here said I SAY UGH picked 2 of the Top 5 shooters in the draft and now that Nichols gone he was worth just about that to us a Nickel. Matter of fact one of the posters who said we have 2 of the top 5 shooters in the draft informed most of us not to fret over the fact we could lose Nichols because Fred Jones wasn't going to see that many minutes anyway. Fred would be one of I SAY UGH'S situational players and receive minutes here and there. Well reality bit us all in the Azzz and it's nice to know we let 2 2nd round picks go one being the player Nichols for Fred Jones a player who'll get situational minutes.

So you rather root for somebody to destroy your team than rather your team destroying him because of a grudge to the GM and Coach.

Interesting, sorry but I have to say your fanism comes into question.

Nope, HoopsHype got it wrong. We owe a future second round pick (2008) for Nichols.

ESPN lists it differently.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/teams/transactions?team=nyk

Acquired forward Zach Randolph and guards Dan Dickau and Freddy Jones from the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Steve Francis and center Channing Frye; acquired the rights to forward Demetris Nichols from Portland for a 2008 second-round pick.

I was thinking they were the same deal also. I remember a second round draft pick being in that deal. At least I thought it was part of the deal.
I'll never trust this' team again.

The important point is, they got Fred Jones as part of the deal.

According to the article that Trueblue posted, apparently it was intentional and the front office doesn't care, even if they knew it was a gift. Go read the article. It's a very interesting read.

so the knicks didn't want to buy out jerome james, but they will pay him 1/3 of his remaining salary( which I think he has 3 years left) to sit on his fat ass all year, since he may miss the season.... cot damn!!

Yes, it's a mind boggling three more years and how did you come up with 1/3?

no one is saying Nichols is Ray Allen.

The undeniable truth is this team's greatest needs include outside shooting and height in the back court.

I'm tired of watching our midget back court of Marbury and Nate- I'm tired of watching string bean crawford pushed around and go 4 for 22.

I'm dreading watching Freddy Jones try to guard bigger players who will just shoot and pass over him.

I really don't know what Nichols can do but I wish him the best of luck. I wish there was a way for him to stay a Knick. Well the stage is set and Zeke made the decission to move Nichols. I think us as Knicks fan when we saw Nichols play in the summer league hitting shots gave us a spark of hope even though he wasn't playing the NBA level players. Yet it still gave us hope. We really don't know what this kid has, but he was something that we could say maybe he's the one.
Now all of us haters and lovers can be unified in saying that this is Zekes team and if Zeke can't deliver a playoff birth I will be the first to say he must go. If Nichols breaks out to be a david Lee or a 6th man type player, I would then want to know why Zeke let him go and I would be upset but I'll get over it. This is Zekes last stand. I'll be pulling for him and the team. I will enjoy all of the games but at the end of the regular season if we are not in it then Zeke will be gone. As matter of fact three quarters of the season in if it don't look good he will be gone and I will root for the next coach just like I did for Larry Brown and Zeke.
Like I said I wish Nichols all the best because something went very foul with Nichols and the Knicks and now that it's over lets move on and have some fun.

Believe me if Freddy Jones don't work out or if this team don't play 500 ball this team will be blown up at the end of the season.

So not only will Dnic be helping the Cavs out on the court with his outside shooting but he will also be giving the Cavs new plays and a real scouting report about our team.

His real value is his outside shot replaces Sasha Pavlovic's dirt cheap. So, instead of overpaying for him, they can wait and use that money on a player when the opportunity presents itself.

Whereas we showcased him to the entire league and gave up a second round pick in the process.

(Yes, this is the same point in my initial post... but I think all the "****" detracted from my overall message)

Good point SC. As usual.

Isiah just made this kid look like a star. Especially when no team was even thinking about Dnic. Everyone knows that Isiah may be bad in signing players but drafting is a whole different story. Especially after Mardy and Balkman turned out to be good players. I would not be surprised if Dnic makes the rotation of the Cavs around the allstar break.

Thanks man. I retired from RealGM. It sucks. I'll be here though, and I hope you keep posting there because beside you, StutterStep, Bill Bradley, kosmo and the mods, there isn't much reason to stick around (and others, like BnO, dj, Vinny, TrueBlue, etc. who post here). Here, though, you got all the great who were in RealGM or got kicked out. Better convo and I don;t waste as much time.

Anyway, DNic is going to be a STUD in Cleveland. I don't know why the pretend like LBJ is a SF. I know he's built like one, but he's a point guard who can play every position like Magic. DNic is going to get a lot of open threes by mid season. i won't draft him in fantasy hoops, but I'll pick him up in January when he's raining threes, as you basically said.

Nichols going to Cleveland just made me more of an NBA fan. I think this kid can
be a special shooter, we'll see about all round game.

I do hope he bites us a few times, just nothing "title stopping".
