MS - the Knicks have a future.

It just may not be the future that Amateur (notice the capital A) GMs as yourself love to play with.

I like 6'6 Mardy Collins more than 6'3 Randy Foye

Ricky Davis does not excite me more than Renaldo Balkman and The Mayor

Theo Ratliffs string of injuries makes Marcus Camby look like Cal Ripken Jr

and I could give a rats butt about some steenkin' cap space for "the future"

Earl you have no concept of basketball i am convinced. I don't like Davis and I don't like Ratliff but at the end of the year they are both playing for a different team because they are expiring.....

Randy Foye can get by anyone off the dribble is stronger than crawford, can hit from the outside and doesn't have a crazy shot selection. And is a character team orientated guy.

Where is this future you speak of, seriously do we have a allstar franchise player, no. So getting rid of zach's monster deal he isn't worth 17/18 mil and getting rid of crawfords contract that gets close to 11 is essential to make that happen.

MS - I have no intention of EVER trying to impress you, or anyone else for that matter, with my "concept" of basketball. You may wait a while in any expectation of the day I need your approval.

Why is it so critical to diss Zach Randolph before the impact of his skill set can be measured in the context of his new running buddies?

You run random fantasy deals up the flagpole and expect a rival GM to consummate these nutty propositions why exactly?

Take off the Bozo The Clown GM hat and step away from the vehicle

Yes I am on drugs. We are a fringe playoff team with zero cap room. Doing that deal is great for the long term health of the franchise, and thats why the deal would never get done.

This deal will never get done because the T-Wolves just traded their franchise player in order to blow the team up and rebuild, and your trade piles on more long-term contracts while sending out one of their building blocks.

remember, the KG trade? Wasn't too long ago to forget, was it?

And seriously, how long do people have to be fans of the Knicks before they stop proposing trades that send out talent while clearing cap space that will never happen?

Trade proposals like this remind me why I dislike trade proposals.

rembee - if the Knicks were EVER just thinking about clearing cap space, (which they never have and never will) they would never have served up the $68 M to Patrick for his final years in New York.

Anyone who uses Cap Space and New York Knicks Basketball in the same sentence should be banished for not paying attention for the last 23 years.

Earl, it isn’t like the financial intricacies of dealing personnel in the NBA are lost on us. But there are some questions that are useful in evaluating what we have and how we are moving forward, and there are some that ain’t.

Are we bringing in skilled players to help us win, whose contracts are commensurate with their contributions to the team? How do we move higher-priced veterans to make room for the cheaper, younger, and probably better alternatives? Are the lengths of the contracts on the books harming our future flexibility, or do we have ending contracts that can be coveted trading chips in a deal down the line?

I’m not saying that these questions make Isiah Thomas look good. But they are way more relevant to a discussion on the Knicks than “How do we blow up this roster to get cap space” or worse, “Why didn’t Isiah blow up this roster to get cap space.”

You might as well be asking George Bush “How are you going to get our troops out of Iraq.” He has no intention of doing so, not on his watch. And Dolan ain’t blowing up the team.

So let’s move on from there.

I'm with Nixluva. I think the young guys carry a very different attitude than the vets have ever shown in their careers. I think the best thing that could ever happen to the Knicks is if they start stealing playing time.

I pray for this. The time is now to make laziness and ineffective defense a thing of the past. Up the standard.

Oh that I wish we could have that happen. At a certain point you can see the future and you must make a choice to embrace it now or waste time with the old ways of the past. It's the right time to go ahead and start the process. I just get the feeling that we would benefit greatly from clearing out these log jams and allowing the young studs that actually fit how we need to play. I don't know how easy it would be to get it done, but I know isiah could get it done.

Some believe that Isiah is holding on to see what happens with Kobe, before he makes his move. i can understand that, but after that is all over, he needs to make sure that we clear out the guys we don't need anymore.

man that's all i want too. that's the reason i disliked the zach randolph trade. francis was done, and frye could have worked his way into an integral part of that young core, or wait for a good trade for him. instead, we swapped them for a one-way player who will get heavy minutes. whenever this team looks ready for a youth movement, we recycle an out-of-favor vet into a flashy new one. it sucks.

i came to accept the trade as a means to get kobe, at which point we'll have mamba, either eddy or zach, and plug key spots with what's left of our youth. man i'd love to see that team peak in the playoffs...

That's why I think you have to move Zach, because your not moving curry and your never going to be a great team with guys that don't care about playing defense. .5blks between the two of them there is no way getting around that.

If Odom or Rasheed Wallace is there I would move zach for each of them. Sheed would be perfect and would be done with marbury.

Lee is on the olympic team roster for a reason because he brings winning qualities. Where is curry? Of course chandler is there before him because he plays both ends of the floor, a scoring big man is not the be all end all. This team actually looked good when you had lee, balkman, fyre marbury and crawford out there at the same time last year.

Defense gets you places in this league, the cavs aren't in the same talent realm as the knicks outside of lebron but everyone gives effort. Z can't move or jump but somehow he is blocking shots and rebounding. You need to move every player you can that doesn't play defense the difference will really show, we will be in more games and have more oppurtunities to win.

I can’t argue with you there, MS. I too have serious doubts about investing 4 years and $100 million in a frontcourt that doesn’t play defense. I’ve been against the Zach trade from the get-go, but I’m going to reserve judgment on Randolph before I see how he plays with this group.

That said, I don’t think Gazebo (or whatever his nickname is) is the easier player to move of the two. Eddy may have his deficiencies on D, but at $9 mill per he is a half the price for a scoring beast down low, something quite a few teams in the league could use. He also isn’t nearly the long-term investment Randolph is. In two years Curry has an opt-out on his contract, and he would probably activate it if he doesn’t get the pay-day he thinks he deserves (and he is scheduled to make $10.5 that year so he likely will be looking for more). A team would have the option of locking in a skilled and still young center for a few more years at a reasonable rate, or letting him go. No risk there, compared to paying a baggage-laden malcontent over $17 million in 2010-11.

This year is an important year for Eddy in my eyes. I was impressed with the progress he made last year, but he has to build on it. If he wants to continue to be the focus of the team he has to show that he deserves it. Improve the fitness level, become a 22-9-1 center who isn’t afraid to lay down the lumber and get a few fouls on defense, or move on. Eddy needs to fulfill that all-star potential, or our team might be better off moving him for a defense-oriented 5 to do the dirty work while letting Randolph do his thing.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves.

I really think that I've always felt this way, to some degree. No one really wanted the log jam we had last year with Francis, Rose etc. It's also about timing. I didn't feel we had the pieces in place to really make it right to go in that direction, but now we can see what Balk and Mardy are like and you can imagine how Chan and DNic fit in. We already know what we have in Lee. There's a nice Core of players that fit the mold of what a winning team needs. I've been supportive of Isiah in this regard. Not his bad moves, but his CLEARLY good moves. I even like the idea of Morris. He's not ready for much yet, but I like his game so far. He doesn't have to be a star, just play solid team ball off the bench.

I don't have any real problem with Jared, but he's just in the way of guys like Chan and DNic, who are both more well rounded players and they type we need. I don't have a problem with Nate so long as he can continue to learn the Point. He's small for my tastes at PG, but he can still be an asset off the bench. I really want to see him use his quickness on the defensive end. There's no reason he shouldn't be more of pest with his speed.

Curry and Zach are clearly one sided players and we're gonna have to appeal to their pride to get them to defend and hold the fort for this team. I'm not expecting miracles, but dang. They have to give us more than they've done so far in their careers. Overall I just want to see the right moves made with the Roster to give this team a better balance and fit. We can't keep all of these guys, cuz it won't work. So "Trimming the Fat" as Bip has been championing is a smart move to make at this time. But exactly what deal is isiah looking to make? If he can't to the fantasy deal for Kobe or the lesser deal for Artest, then what? How does he handle the overstuffed roster?

The point is, don't waste moves on guys like Steve Francis which create log jams, delay development and place you out of position to acquire players that become available at the last moment. You don't need timing for situations like this, you simply don't make the moves. You think of a guy like Allan HOuston, if he were ever to play again. Would he help us win a title. Of course not. But he would help us win games while at the same time giving us a high character guy that could truly mentor our youth in the backcourt. But we have no room for him. Now maybe Isiah doesn't want Allan, but because of our long-term contracts to useless players we leave ourselves unable to make these signings of opportunity. This is where I feel Isiah has needed the most improvement.

I think we have to allow that Isiah has collected talent not only to keep but to use in trades. In the case of this roster, that surely seems to be the case. He's obviously looking to make a deal and the more talent he has to give increases his chances of making a deal. There are no guarantees, but he tends to take on talent and then turn that into players he wants, trade chips or draft picks.
We don't all have to agree with his methods, but it's not hard to understand how he views things. There were and are opportunities to be involved in deals for bigtime players. Slim as they may be he is doing the right thing by staying in the conversation and collecting talent that might appeal to a desparate GM. Who knows what will happen with Kobe or Artest? So we have to allow for that too.

I think his method has netted some good results in terms of talent and now he has to make probably his most important roster decisions to date. He has to now decide who he wants to go to war with and trim away some of that talent he's gathered. In this case less will mean more.
