Good talking to you too, oohah. Summer's been good. I've actually enjoyed the downtime off the message boards and off the TV watching hoops. I don't follow other sports, so it's a real off-time for me. Been reading books on how to be a better parent, and that's so much more nourishing that my fixation on this team. But when the season begins again I expect my addiction to kick in with full effect.

This gloomy shift in the weather is worrying me. Days are already getting shorter, leaves are starting to change color. So many outdoor household project still to be finished. I don't love the cold, but the short days kill me the most.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, my Birthday... I kinda loath all the winter holidays (I'm more a bbq on the deck kinda guy) but I suppose they give some structure and break up the monotony of the dark months. Damn, it's still summer and I feel like winter is so upon me.

Guess I really am just a pessimist at heart.

Dear Communist Larry Loving, dog abusing, Sprewell immitator:

I am glad you would like to put me on ignore b/c it's good to know you've finally realized I've been ignoring you all these years. You are not a true Knicks fan and you don't root for USA basketball either. Someday, I'm going to be the new Duke coach and I can't wait to recruit Travis Bippity.

Sincerely,

Allanfan

PS: BlueSeats is lying. He would never sig a quote from you. Only losers turn a Bip quote into a UK sig.

dang...I have to run to a yankee game...take one half day to spend time with the family and the two novelists (BS and Bip) take the board over.

Thank GD for eVil, he knows how to grind a board to a stop (jokes)

Quick clarification.

Lightning in a bottle is 50 wins. 60 is kind of absurd, even by an optimists terms. But 50 is like, hly effing sht.

So, 39 wins...to me...IMHO...FAILURE.

Sorry, we won 36 or something before LB, and I believe LB was a mirage (is that spelled correct?), I expected .500 last year.

And we added role players and defense. So I want OVER .500...that's just me...will I root like the dickens...abso-Smurf-ly (I've been with a 6 months old all day...sorry) so I'm gonna say I believe in 43 wins MINIMUM.

Now I have to run to the game and reread some of these good posts on the phone, but good communication.

Funny post...Bip and Oohah predict the same number of wins....did anybody else fall out their chair and drop the laptop on that one?

Well...one thing for sure, we will have 23 wins at the all star break...you can take that to the bank.

THANK GOD, someone else is being reasonable regarding this team. I feel the same way. 36-39 wins would be a failure to me as well. Why should this team be looking at anything but a .500 or better season? Its not like there are so many dominant teams that we can't win half of our games this year. The key this year will be as we've stated before. The young studs on this team will be playing more and with a better sense of purpose. Last year they were pretty good, but they were still rookies who lacked enough knowledge and experience to be depended on. Now I believe they'll be better and with Isiah making better use of them and not wasting their skills sitting them on the bench next to him, the overall level of play should improve. I expect Curry to have a much better start and year and that's gonna be huge. I expect that Jared will give us that glue we need in the SL and Jamal and Lee will give us that quality play off the bench. This is a nice team and I really don't see a need to have an apathetic attitude towards this teams chances this year. We may not be great, but .500 or slightly better isn't too much to ask or expect from this team.

We learned that if Steph and these players are allowed to play teams will have trouble stopping us. So if we pair that with an improved defensive effort, this team SHOULD win games. Consistency, Cohesiveness and a collective will to do better is why i'm so optimistic about this year. We'll see an improvement in all 3 areas. Things that were missing last year.

one thing about the pessimists, atleast they are telling it like it is.

Nobody with something to say that ooh hah (seemingly playing the optimist role) agrees with bip with the number of wins.

Fellas...I'm an optimist because i BELIEVE!!!

RV, Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying, but let me ask you this: What is the minimum threshhold of wins hoped for before you can be an optimist?

It is not about the number of wins so much as what a particular number means to you.

In any case, my prediction casts me not an optimist nor a pessimist, but a REALIST.

The reality is that even though this team has scads of talent, size, athletic ability, ball-handling, and youth, they don't have a foundation to build on from last year. That means they will have to take some lumps and bumps while they develop cohesion this upcoming season. ANd that is not taking into account the possibility of injuries or other normal strife.

I do agree with you that this team could win 50 if everything fell right. But that is really too much to think about while being fair to the team. I think a high-end of 43-45 wins is possible. But a more realistic view says this team will be about what most of us hoped it would be last year: around .500, then hopefully they build from there.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is not really the number of wins predicted by the poster. I think the issue can be summed up like this. An optimist is willing to put the past behind him and believe in this current team and its potential to build something for the future and have a great season until it is actually shown on the court that this team is going to implode and fail to be successful. A pessimist is going to hold onto the past failures and take the view that he is not going to believe the team can succeed until the team actually proves on the court that it is building chemistry and winning games. This is the reason two posters can predict similar wins for next season, but one be considered an optimist and the other be viewed as a pessimist.

Trust the Process

In other words, an optimist never learns and is willing to believe in unfullfilled promise. A pessimist takes the only tangible evidence available to him and processes it to establish his expectations. Sounds fair.
