Another thing worth mentioning. This is the third extremely poor firing in 3 years. The way this was handled was ridiculous. All you Larry haters are going to say, he had this coming. With that said, did Chaney and Lenny?

Dolan made up his mind months ago and continued to string Larry along. Do you really want a guy running your franchise that makes decisions out of spite?

I really think Dolan has a thing with coaches. He just hates them, whoever they are.

Then those people are not TRUE Knick Fans.

knicks refusing to pay out contract

Knicks Fire Brown, Refusing to Pay Out Contract

GREENBURGH, N.Y., June 22 — Larry Brown was fired by the Knicks this morning after just one, surprisingly tumultuous season as their head coach. And the team indicated that it did not plan to pay him the more than $40 million left on his contract.

Larry Brown watched a Knicks game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in April. The team stumbled to a 23-59 record in their only season under Brown as head coach.

Isiah Thomas, the team's president and general manager, was immediately named as Brown's replacement. James L. Dolan, the chairman of Madison Square Garden, made the decision just before 10 a.m., after a one-hour meeting with Brown, Thomas and Steve Mills, the Garden president.

The decision ends a strange and protracted drama that began in mid-April, when the Knicks concluded their first season under Brown with a 23-59 record, their worst in two decades. It ranked among the worst seasons in Brown's Hall-of-Fame career.

Yet Dolan's disenchantment went far beyond the poor results on the court, and he ultimately fired Brown for a number of other transgressions. The Knicks, contending that Brown violated several provisions of his contract, fired him "for cause," and thus do not intend to pay him the balance of his contract, in excess of $40 million.

Under terms of Brown's contract, a five-year deal, he can appeal the team's decision to withhold his pay. Commissioner David Stern will ultimately decide the issue.

The Knicks hired Brown, with considerable fanfare and optimism, last July. Although they kept expectations modest, team officials figured that Brown, who has won both an N.C.A.A. and N.B.A. championship, would reverse a half decade of failure. Instead, Brown exacerbated the franchise's misery, losing games by the dozen, alienating his players and engaging in a public war of words with Stephon Marbury, the team's star point guard.

Dolan wanted specific assurances from Brown that he would change his behavior, both publicly and privately. When Brown wavered, Dolan decided to fire him.

Neither Brown nor any team officials were available for comment. Dolan and Thomas issued a statement expressing their frustration.

"Larry has had a long and storied career," Dolan said in the statement. "We hired him last summer with the expectation that he would be with the Knicks for a long time. Sometimes, decisions work and sometimes they don't. After careful consideration, despite the best intentions from everyone involved, this current structure did not work for us last season and I did not think it was going to improve next season. I have great personal admiration for Larry, but have concluded that it is best for our franchise if we make this change."

Thomas, who assembled the Knicks' unwieldy roster over the last two and a half years, becomes the Knicks' fifth coach since January 2004. He previously coached the Indiana Pacers from 2000-03, compiling a 131-115 record.

Finally good news for Larry.
He is out of this mess.
As per prospect for next season I think it is nothing to do with Isaih.
Hi will coach or some other guy will not make any difference.
After waching the Playoffs and Filals this season it's clear we have no players cappable to win.
One group already proved that they are losers and another has no idea how to play yet.
We will be in the same boat with JailBlazers, Atlanta and Charlotta for a long streach of years regardles GM's and coaches hiring. At least untill Dolan will sell the team to somebody who cares about bascetboll in NY...

Yup, because it would also mean that the Bulls would likely get Oden, which no real Knick fan could live with.

What has IT done to let us believe in him? 3 coaches have failed with Marbury at the core of their roster.

Berman on ESPNews: "It's going to be a dispute on how much money Larry gets. It could get ugly. I don't want to get into specifics. The Knicks are obviously very upset with Larry's performance this year. Dolan wanted Larry to suffer a little bit. Dolan is very bitter. He was told that Dolan went into the meeting with an open mind. He didn't like what he heard."

"Larry wants to be the coach and GM. He was usurping Isiah's responsibility. It was a terrible marriage since the beginning."

i'm actually relieved... the situation was untenable the moment Dolan decided LB was the one he wanted to alienate here... LB had no future potential to coach this team going forward after the messy way the entire season last year & this offseason was handled by everyone involved... as unfortunate & stupid as this decision may be, it had to have been done.

now Isiah can finally be held FULLY accountable for the roster he put together, & Marbury will finally have to answer to a higher authority than him for a change... i'm actually a little eager to see how this all plays out.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

In all fairness, this decision seems to stem from Dolan. If he pushed Brown out and ordered Isiah to coach, he has no choice. I can't imagine Isiah is really happy about all this.

Yeah I can't imagine Isiah is thrilled about having to coach a team he put together of all guys who he likes and gets along with. Isiah had planned to coach the Knicks at some point and don't kid yourself otherwise. Brown's firing made that opportunity available.
So you're saying he gave Brown a $50 mil contract so that he could end up being coach? That makes no sense. No GM who wanted to coach a team would give that long a contract to another coach. He probably could not have conceivably pictured Larry coaching the way he did and him taking over himself as coach.
