If the PG isn't a better PG then whats the point of moving Stephon in the first place, especially when we have someone like Quentin Richardson to play SG and Trevor Ariza SF.

It all depends on the best fit. You want the to have the best players possible at every position. For instance, if somehow Mike Bibby were playing point and Steph was moved to SG, bring Q or JC off the bench. Marbury is just better than Q or JC, as is Bibby.
my top 8 pgs:
Kidd
Nash
Bibby
Davis
Billups*
Cassell (when healthy)
Tinsley (when healthy)
3 way tie for 8th - Parker Marbury Arenas

You have Cassell and Tinsley ahead of Marbury? Ridiculous. You consider Bibby the number 3 PG in the league? Bibby is a nice player, but what has he done in 'career moments' or on a day-to-day basis better than Marbury? Nothing. Don't let one good playoff series fool you.

You are obviously going out of your way to put Marbury low.
my top 8 sgs:
Kobe
T-Mac
Carter
Wade
Pierce
AI
Ginobli
Hamilton

Your SG rankings make much more sense.
Steph if moved could be better at the position than Rip.

Stephon Marbury is better at any position than Hamilton, PG through Center. Marbury is simply a better player. He brings much more to the table. Come on.
* people will try and compare Steph to Chauncey but playing defense, displaying character and leadership were never problems of Billups, he just needed his decision making capabilities tweaked.

Have you watched Billup's career? Do you know how many teams gave up on him? The only possible way to rank Billups ahead of Marbury is to only look at the past 2 seasons, where Marbury was still statistically better, but Billups was much more successful at winning.

While I'm at it, what has Baron Davis done in his career besides accumulate stats? Or Sam Cassell? How about Steve Nash, he was MVP last year, but prior to that, I saw nothing to make him better than Marbury.

The only player from your list who has clearly had a better career than Marbury is Kidd, and you can add Nash if you take into account he is at his peak right now.

oohah

who knew asking your POINT guard to execute a game plan and win which guys like Nash Bibby Davis and Cassell have all shown the ability to do over the course of their careers had such little value.

it took Billups 5 seasons to start to get it. His last one in Minny he played well. thats how he got the contract from Detroit. yr 6 under Carlisle the ECF's. yr 7 world champs.

McK1, you've now shown that your purely a Marbury-Hater instead of someone who is able to make astute arguments about him when you say that Cassell, Baron Davis and Tinsley are better players OR better PGs then Marbury, theres no way. Its just not true. Sam Cassell and Baron Davis are 50X more the Stats-Guys that Marbury will ever be. I'm done with this argument from here on out.

if point guard means score all the points in your basketball handbook than Marbury is your guy.

I don't think Steph is capable of running the show. He is Gee-Money.

seen them all plenty of times thru the years.

I'm not a Davis fan but he can run a team better than Steph. Mash played 19 games in 03-04. He missed most of the middle of the season. Somehow with just maGloire he was able to lead NO to 40 plus wins and the play-offs. We'll see how GS does this year. Davis lit a fire under guys like Dunleavy Pietrus and Biedrins late last season. 2 f those 3 I doubt most here even heard of. If Davis is healthy they'll start to become familiarities.

Tinsley lost Artest for a full season, O' Neal and Jackson for a quarter season and still held his team together won 44 and made the 2nd round. Stephon only "lost" Tim Thomas from his play-off squad and added Jamal in place of Penny. 33 wins and the 8th pick in the draft.

KG became MVP with Cassell at point. They won 58 games and made it to the WCF's after yrs of 1st round exits. since 97-98 (his first as full time starter) where he and KVH led the Nets to the play-offs his teams have made the post-season 6 out of his 6 full seasons and he has 2 conference finals appearances. I know he needs more street cred to compete with Steph as a starting point. his #'s: 18 points 7 assists 46 % shooting 85% from the line. what a slouch! must need more street cred.

tinsley is decent but his shooting will kill you. not even a comparison to Marbury. Plus he has a coach named Rick Carlisle running the show. Cassell is old and was always a headcase and never as good as Marbury. Baron looks a lot better playing next to Jason Richardson than Dan Dickau as would Marbury if he was playing next to some real SGs who score and defend

I would love to see what Tinsley would do on this Knicks team without the likes of Jermaine O'neal, Artest & steven jackson. Guarantee you he wouldn't have all those assists and his FG% would be even lower

1 thing is for sure - it couldn't be no worse than what Steph did.

33 wins

and those guys look good playing next to Davis.

If you have Direct TV spring for the League Pass. Its worth it! Watching Ward/Eisley has warped the minds of many.

Ok, not for me to come to bonnies aid here, but he asks a good question in light of one thing: Why is Larry moving him to SG and trying to make Craw into the PG?

I'll take the first stab. Cuz the 8 assists he avg.s are garbage considering how much he touches the ball! Marbs to light it up always has the darn ball, thus he gets lots of easy assists. The rest are off of dumping the ball when he drives to the basket.

The question should lie in who is our best SG? Marbs again?

At this time, lets just say that Craw is not out best PG, and maybe the PG that ultimatly takes us to the promise land has yet to be drafted, or traded to us!

FOr now, we are making do and experimenting!

I see Larry Moving Steph to SG & Crawford to PG because. You can move Steph to SG and he would be a very good one. While Crawford has way more potential because of his size at PG than SG. That equats to a better balance of using there talent. While if Marbury was PG he is a very good one. But Crawford at SG you would take away a lot of his advantages. Thats what Larry Brown does. He puts people in position to be successful, uses them correctly, and get the best of his players.

Vs Spurs that yr that Marbury took it to Tony Parker. Parker even admitted he was scared to play Marbury more than Jason Kidd when Spurs were facing Nets in the finals. That doesn't make Marbury better than Kidd. But shows you the impact that Marbury had that series.

While Brown might get on all his PGs case more than any other player. In the end he also makes it easier for his PGs to run an offense because he gives them all a structured offense and defense to work in. Some players need freedom, some need structure. We tried giving Marbury & Crawford freedom last yr and you know how that turned out. So I feel there going to flourish in this more structured offense and defense.

agreed.

to add:
Brown has the luxury of trying many and any till someone gets it right. I doubt Brown wants to put the time and energy into battling with Steph and his ego and he doesn't have to since Crawford has a great deal of raw talent as well and he is probably much easier to break.

personally I'd like to see IT's investment in Crawford turn out to be a Jermaine O' Neal type of situation. I didn't like the move positionally for Craw. After watching him the 03-04 season in Chi I thought he'd make a horrible 2. He is a point and that where he should play. KT's best game of the season was with Jamal playing point. Against the Suns, KT showed more skill than he had in a long time. It made a huge difference getting the ball early in the clock on the wings and looking to enter it instead of just standing out there as a pawn to add to Steph's assist total. mo Taylor had his best game as well with Craw. He and Taylor owned the fourth qtr up in Cle late last season with the Cavs fighting for a spot. This pre-season, he and Frye have been on a bee-line with each other in the fourth. in Chi when he wasn't gunning he and Curry made it happen out there. According to those who saw game 1 vs NJ, except for Curry's conditioning and rust, there wasn't much drop-off.

chemistry b/n your orchestrator and your bigs is key in building a winner.

does Craw have the mental capacity to put forth a sustained season and seasons? dunno. time'll tell. thats the beauty of rebuilding.

1st I want to dispel this MYTH that somehow Steph is not a good PG. The MYTH that he hogs the ball and that players do not excel when playing with him, cuz he doesn't pass the ball.

Marion avg'd 15.9 shots a game with Nash
Marion avg'd 17.2 shots yr 1 and 18.0 yr 2 with Steph

J Johnson avg'd 14.3 shots a game with Nash
Playing with Steph JJ avg'd 31.5 mpg in 01-02 and 27.5 in 02-03 and his FGA's per game were 9.9 and 9.7.
With Nash JJ played 39.5 mpg so in about 10 more minutes he got 4 more shots a game. That seems logical. What it shows is that if JJ had gotten more minutes a game with Steph he would likely have had more FGA's.

Stoudemire avg'd 16.7 shots a game with Nash, his 3rd yr in the league
Stoudemire avg'd 10.1 shots in his rookie year with Steph. Just remember he was a rookie and only started 71 of 82 games and avg'd 31 mpg. Meanwhile he was ROY. By comparison KMart avg'd 11.4 shots in his rookie yr with Steph. KG avg'd 9.1 in his rookie yr before Steph and the next season when Steph came on KG avg 14 shots.

JCraw avg'd 15.6 shots a game with Steph.
KVH avg'd 17.9, 15.7 and 14.4 shots with Steph
KG avg'd 14.2 and 15.7 shots
Gugs avg'd 16.5 and 15.4 shots

How about Comparing Steph's FGA and Assists with other top PG's:

Guard ..............#FGA/G - Assists
Allen Iverson .......24.2 - 7.9
Gilbert Arenas .....19.0 - 5.1
Baron Davis..........16.3 - 7.9
S. Marbury ..........15.9 - 8.1
Mike Bibby .........15.8 - 6.8
Sam Cassell ........15.6 - 7.3 (03-04 since he was injured 04-05)
Jason Kidd ..........15.5 - 8.9 (02-03 his last healthy full season)
Kirk Hinrich ........14.5 - 6.4
Tony Parker ........13.9 - 6.1
Jeff McInnis ........12.0 - 5.1
Steve Nash .........11.4 - 11.5 (jumped to 17.9 shots in Playoffs)
C. Billups .......... 11.4 - 5.8
Andre Miller .......10.9 - 6.9
Jason Terry .........9.2 - 5.4 (his normal FGA's is 14 or more, he really tried to be just a passer, until the playoffs when they really needed his scoring and he went back to his normal 14 FGA's )

Nixluva, thats one hell of a post. Excellent research. I never even though about looking up the Shots Per Game that other teammates got while playing with Stephon. It really shows that his 8 APG average isnt just hogwash, it's attributed to amount of times he does pass ball. The FGA to Assists is also very telling, geez look at Iversons... 24.7 to 8! thats ridiculous.

its not that Steph doesn't pass the ball. I don't know what it is but he does make the right passes and the offense is stagnant. Just look at the olympics, he's at his best when his job is to score

like I said the problem is not that MArbury shoots to much. Thats where the media is mistaken when they criticize him. Its hard to explain but if you pay attention to the games there is only 2 things he can do with the ball penetrate and when the defense doesn't allow him to he hands the ball of to Crawford on the perimeter with no time left on the clock. Marbury needs to make plays happen earlier in the possession. Now he has the players around him who can make things happen. Lets wait and see if he finally wins some games as opposed to losing year after year with the exception of one lucky series with PHX where he had Amare and Marion.

yeah great research. now lets look at how each pg's presence affected their teams performance.

for you stat worshippers

with each respective point guard on the court this is how the team fared:

player ........net per 48 .........net total
Steve Nash .........+12.4 .........+662
Chauncey billups .....+ 5.9 .....+352
Jamal Tinsley .......+3.7 .......+101
Mike Bibby .........+2.7 .........+175
Baron Davis .........+5.1 .........+104
Sam Cassell .........+4.0 .........+127
Jason Kidd .........+4.0 .........+237
Stephon Marbury ....-0.4 ....-28

thats the exact reason Amare and Marion went to mgmt and suggested a change in point guards. Amare went on the Nash recruiting trip.
