I love how Barber played last night. I hope he makes the team.

I just saw the line on MSG that the press conf is coming up, but the repeat of last night's game is still on...

Maybe it'll interrupt the game at 4:15.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

MSG carried the conference. As I understand it, his salary comes off for luxury tax purposes this season since he would have met hte waiting period and the salary is measured at year end. i don't believe it comes off for cap purposes until his contract expires

His greatness shined in the 1999 season, but then it went all downhill from there. From 1996 - 2000 he was in the prime of his career in my opinion.
Later than that. Houston had some big seasons in those bad Knick seasons. I remember when McDyess went down, people figured we would be lucky to win 25 games. Instead we won 37. We were #1 in the league in 3's made, 3 point FG% and fewest TOs. Houston scored 20 a game and he and Spree really kept the team afloat until late in the year. The guy played his heart out on that team and the had no chance. A lot of NBAers would have mailed it in. We saw it with Vince Carter. Houston didnt. He's a class act.

100% yes!!!

Allan Houston was always my favorite player. Allan, thank you for always being a class act, being smooth as can be, and never dishonoring the people and city that you represent. I'll always remember you and your jumpshot.

not one mention of The Contract.

and that's totally fine. allan houston was awesome. when we were winners he was a huge part of the franchise; when we were lousy, he was the reason to watch the team. wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but i could watch him jab step and swish his jumpers for as long as he played. he may not have been as spectacular at other parts of the game, but it was never for lack of effort or bad attitude. he played his heart out, and apparently his knee too, for the fans and for his team. lots of great memories, even the 50 point games were highlights of seasons i'm trying to forget. i for one had a tear in my eye when i heard the news. good luck, allan.

this is 2005 man, we are about to embark into another style of play, and that style of play will bring us at least one championship.....forget about the Ewing and HOuston Knicks team....Now we have Curry, Frye, Nate, Marb, Crawf...Zeke and Brown.....

the ewing era was perhaps the one that most fans on this board remember most vividly/are most proud of. It symbolized hard work and spirit. And if you (not you, diderotn, just people in general) think that houston didn't embody hard work and dedication to the game, then you really need to reconsider your knowledge as a knick fan. I am sad to see the last remaining member of those teams go. Now we are truly starting to get left with young players who can be easily misguided with just an old coach to keep them away from bad habits/influences. I think we underestimate the impact of veterans a little (but by NO means am I saying let's go back to the layden-style teams). We need to show a little gratitude to players of that era...

PS: Allan Houston was a class act. The only thing he did wrong was sign a contract that any player would have signed. A lot of people remember him for the things he didn't do (calling him one dimensional), but that's not fair. One thing the guy didn't do was quit. Someone mentioned Vince Carter and T-Mac - Allan might not be as explosive as either of those two guys, but at least he gave it his all 100% of the time that he was here. Sure, all players are supposed to give it their all, but that's not reality anymore. Allan was a rare type of player that remained humble, yet passionate and believe it or not he repped NY more than a lot of so called "fan favorites". I've always sensed that he respected what it meant to be a Knick. He never dodged responsibility or pointed fingers. He shouldered the load for a few seasons and didn't do so bad considering the circumstances. Not bad for a one-dimensional guy. People whose perspectives are one-dimensional can't see the fact that Allan had a lot more heart than people give him credit for.

That being said, it was about time Allan made this decision. I'm happy for him to be able to do it on his own terms. I hope he's part of this team in some form for a long time.

While I agree that Houston was an extremely hard worker. I really don't put him in that class of the Ewing era. Houston actually was more in Ewing's later stages. I think of Starks, Oakley, Mason and Harper part of that era. That was when the Knicks were "really" serious threat to win a championship. People hated on the KNicks so bad. The Riley Knicks. I will miss Houston but please do not confuse the eras.

Say whatever you want about Allan, but he is easily one of the best players the Knicks have ever had. He never quit (a la Vince) when our team had poor talent. Instead, he overachieved and was a big reason why our team stayed competitive even though we shouldn't have won more than 30 games after Camby and Van Gundy were gone. As others have mentioned, I'm going to miss that Allan Houston jumper that has the perfect form and is an art in itself. Farewell Allan, time to officially move on now.

Yeah I apologize for the vague reference. I mean to say that he was there when the Knicks were respectable, which was essentially up to the time when ewing left, because after that I really thought it was obvious they were only going downhill with the spree + h20 combo. That was why I stated rather generally that he was a key part of the Ewing era. I guess I meant to say that he definitely belonged to the type of old school players that the knicks used to be, although it seems paradoxical at first - a jumpshooting guard who wasn't known for his defense. I wanted to empahsize that he tried his darn hardest, NEVER ever btched to the media about his injuries or difficulties, and was someone you could always be proud about having on your roster, which is a stark contrast to what some of the knicks of the past few seasons have been.
To the future and knicks team that has the talent, but just needs some D - if both are combined then who knows what will happen

A sad day indeed.

My two favorite Houston moments:

1. The Charlotte series just before the imfamous Knicks-Miami brawl. For the first time in Van Gundy's career, the Knicks were clicking. The biggest surprise of the series was Houston digging a fox hole on the court and provided covering fire for everyone else. He played heavy D for the fist time and he ran the team when necessary. Ewing seemed surprised at first and then, finally, accepting of Houston's game. Houston spread the floor for some amazing, dead on play and they swept Charlotte 3-0. For the first time since I became a Knick fan, I thought they were the best NBA team period. And Houston, for the first time, showed that he could do way more than score.

2. The last Knick game I attended (damn, it's been years) was a MN game that went into triple overtime. The overtimes were, of course, a Marbury and Houston duel. Houston nailed the winning three from corner in the final seconds.

My favorite Houston quality, other than his shooting and showing up to play:

The guy was so classy that it didn't bother me when he got all Jesusy on us. He didn't appear to change. He continued doing solid community work and seldom thumped his bible in public.
