haha.. well I love these signings. These two aren't as good as what the Rays lost and I love that it'll rub the salt into Red Sox Nation

apparently we just signed bartolo colon to a minor-league contract. normally i'd be against a move like this but apparently he's lost a ton of weight and had a 1.47era in the dominican winter league in 7 starts. low-risk flyer.

Freddy Garcia signed to a minor league deal... low risk move, maybe he'll be another Shawn Chacon for us, who knows.

Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Andy Pettitte, who won more
postseason games than any other pitcher in history and helped
the New York Yankees to five World Series championships, will
retire, ESPN Radio in New York is reporting, without saying
where it received the information.
Pettitte, 38, would leave Major League Baseball with a
240-138 record and 3.88 earned-run average over 16 seasons, all
but three of them in New York. He earned 19 wins in
the postseason.
Yankees spokesman Michael Margolis declined comment on
Pettitte’s future.

Did Andy make it official?? As of the other day, I thought I read that some officials within the organization thought that he was warming up to the idea of returning for one more year and that his wife had given him her blessing. Has anything changed?

Disregard, I just saw V's post..Wow..That stings man..We really could've used him..Thanks for the memories is right man. Dude was incredible for us over the years. Best of luck to him from here on in.

there's a press conference scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30am where he'll make it official... sad day for Yankee fans but he's earned his retirement... the Yankees have never been able to replace Andy when he left the first time & i doubt they'll be able to replace him for a long time now.

What a great Yankee- proud to say I saw his whole career. Andy P was an integral part of some of my best memories as a baseball fan. Will never forget the World Series duel vs. Smoltz. One of the greates games I've ever seen.

Wow, this team is so screwed. We have the highest payroll and are gonna struggle not to finish 3rd in our division.

I'll definitely miss Andy. I'm sad he's retiring because he still had plenty left and the team really needs him.I respect that he has to think about his family though.

I'm sad to see the man leave. He was a great Yankee and one of my favorites, and it was amazing how he was able to keep his level of play up through all these years. He was pitching like a CY candidtate until he got hurt last year too. That was just great and waaay more than you could expect from a pitcher his age. I'll miss him for certain. With that said, I'm happy for him b/c he seemed sincere that he wanted to be with his family and be with his kids as they get older. That's totally cool IMO and he deserves that. Good luck to Andy.

And Yikes is right BigSmooth.

The topic hasn't come up in a long time but I still wish we had CC and Johan as our #1 and 2 guys. Two ace lefties with ERAs below 3 would have put our front end of the rotation ahead of all others in the AL the past 3 years and I'd be more optimistic about next year. Those two plus 3 .500 starters would be solid.

"After a dozen seasons with the A's, Eric Chavez is heading to the Yankees on a minor-league deal, hoping to back up New York star Alex Rodriguez at the position where Chavez has earned six Gold Gloves.

Chavez also can play first - where the Yankees have All-Star Mark Teixeira - and he can DH, a spot held by Yankees fixture Jorge Posada.

"Obviously, they've got the best third baseman in the history of the game, and they have one of the best first basemen right now," Chavez told The Chronicle by phone on Friday evening. "I'm not going in worried about playing too much (of the time)."

Chavez said that with numerous injuries the past three years, this might be a good situation if he makes the club."

So I guess the rock solid play of Nunez meant nothing to the Yankees.

Now that football is over, I am focused on baseball and the Yanks. Good read on Philly Hughes from the NY Post..we really need this kid to win 20 games this year.

TAMPA, Fla. – Phil Hughes had a breakout year in 2010, but he spent most of this winter dwelling on the second half of the season when his performance dipped.

"The wins were there, but I fell off big time in the second half," the Yankees pitcher said Monday morning after throwing a bullpen session. "I was disappointed with that. It's one thing to kind of have a slow start and have a good second half. You think about all that success in the offseason. When you have a bad second half, all I thought about was those bad games because there weren't very many good ones mixed in there."

Yankees pitchers and catchers are not scheduled to begin spring training until Feb. 15, but Hughes has been at the Yankees' minor-league complex for the last two weeks getting a head start.

The 24-year-old came into last spring battling for the No. 5 starter's job, which he won. He got off to a fast start, made the All-Star team and finished the year 18-8.

Hughes said when he looks back on last year, he thinks he did not throw his changeup enough early in the year. The development of that pitch was a big story last spring and a reason he won the spot in the rotation. But when the season began, Hughes did not throw the pitch very often because his other pitches were so good. When he tried to go back to the pitch later in the year, he had trouble throwing it.

"I felt like that might have hurt me a little bit, just not having it," he said. "Then, maybe when fatigue set in and I really needed that changeup to help me get through these games it just wasn't there."

Hughes' role on the Yankees gained importance this winter when the team missed out on Cliff Lee and Andy Pettitte retired. Now, Hughes will be viewed as the team's No. 3 or No. 2 starter, depending on where you slot A.J. Burnett.

"Every time we needed a big start from a guy, [Pettitte's] been the guy," Hughes said. "Obviously, we're going to miss that but that's the nature of the game. Guys retire, no one stays around forever. I feel like it's one of those things we have to move on from. Obviously, the talk this year has been our rotation isn't really deep right now. Things always tend to work themselves out. With the offense we have, we're going to win a lot of games. I learned that last year, throwing out some duds that I got Ws from. It's just one of those things. I think we'll be fine."

Eric Chavez's minor league contract with the Yankees includes an out-clause if he doesn't make the roster by March 26.
In other words, if he doesn't make the team, he'll still have a few days to latch on elsewhere. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Chavez would earn a base salary of $1.5 million if he makes the Yankees roster. He has the potential to make an additional $700,000 based on time spent on the roster and $3.4 million in performance-based incentives. February 9 - 2:20 p.m. ET
