On a scale of Zero to All the Nova boys wanna bro it out… where would YOU be if you were in Mikal’s shoes?
All he has to do is tell anyone who wants to listen that he wants to somehow play on Knicks when his contract ends. Teams will get scared.
Uncle Wes and Leon already know the answer to that question cause I’m not that smart and I woulda asked Mikal that myself already.
What say you?
Did DM want to go to CLE?
Did Lillard not demand MIA?
Hard to make those demands when you have several years on your contract.
but listen if the knicks think those are options then you stand pat.
but otherwise a guy like Lavine for practically free might be worth considering.
Work with me to understand the perspective instead of trying to only find the flaws and stopping there.
Lillard, DM had 3 full contract years left when they were moved, plus player options. That means their current teams have all the control and leverage over player. Their respective teams have absolute control for 2 years and then it diminishes significantly the next year (last year of contract) and is near zero when a player is an UFA (at this point all team is left with is sign and trade opportunities). Similarly, Lillard has other reasons why he would not opt out, like he will be 36 and have a $63M player option… that you think he will walk away from LOL To sign with a team that has cap space? So really Lillard has 4 years and Giannis influence to stay.
And sometimes teams need to take a risk assessment before a trade and just go for it because of the benefits. So we have 3 entirely different situations for DM, Lillard, Mikal.
Today, Mikal has one more year left until his “control” year. Today Brooklyn has its best leverage opportunity to trade Mikal and get the best return of assets. Next year it’ll be diminished greatly, especially if he goes on Podcasts and reminisces about his Villanova days and how much he loved playing with an MVP level guy and his boys.
What team would trade for Mikal (Houston, for example) with Brooklyn and give up massive assets if they knew they were inheriting a player who only has 1 “control” year on contract. Additionally, they would have back channeled and already gotten a feel for what Mikal wanted to do long term, cause why wouldnt they? They would unsterstand how badly he wanted to play in NY versus just signing a massive max contract.
So, I’ll ask again: On a scale of Zero to All the Nova boys wanna bro it out… where would YOU be if you were in Mikal’s shoes?
Cause Leon knows this answer but does the other team (Houston) know that information?
