we'll just have to hope AJ has a big bounceback year & Andy decides to come back afterall... i think i'll play the lottery today... as long as we're living on prayers right now, it couldn't hurt.

Looking more and more like Pettitte is going to retire. I wonder what kind of year this team is going to have. Banuelos and Betances are big time pitching prospects and Montero has a potential all star bat, but it may be a couple of years before those guys can help the team. At this point the Yankees kind of seem stuck in terms of having a legitimate chance at improving the team for next year. Next year might end up being a transition year like a 3 seasons ago.

yea, it seems like all three of those guys (banuelos, betances, montero) could use more seasoning in AAA.

last year montero hit 290 in AAA with a 870 OPS and 21 HRs. i would be surprised if he made the team outright, hope that he absolutely crushes AAA and they can bring him up at some point to either split time or replace russel martin.

banuelos (5'11 LHP from mexico, will be 20 yo for the 2011 season) only pitched 64 innings last year, and only 15 in AA. he is a year at least away from the bigs.

you figure betances (6'8 RHP from brooklyn, will be 23 for the 2011 season) is in the same boat. 85 innings last year and only 14 in AA.

kind of frustrating, was hoping from more out of cashman other than "we're gonna throw a ton of cash at cliff lee and pray that he signs and hope that pettitte comes back." that's not really an offseason "plan" so to speak.

I can't believe we had no plans at all to improve the bullpen. We let Wood walk for peanuts and only went after Pedro Feliciano? NOt only are we missing 2 starters, we lost our setup man and we dont really have any depth. Hughes is really gonna have to step up, because or staff is basically one starter and one closer right now.

If this was any other team, it would be time to blow it up, build around guys like Cano and Hughes, and hoard prospects

Can we at least sign Grant Balfour as a setup guy?

According to Tex, Pettitte is leaning towards retirement. This has the makings of a nightmare season.

Depends on how much he wants but you have to give him serious consideration. Beggars can't be choosers.

we're looking at Jeremy Bonderman... his #'s were whatever last year, but he's still young & has a good arm... i say go for it... can't go into the season with just CC, Hughes, AJB & 2 rookie starters... & Sergio Mitre is a long reliever at best... maybe a change of scenery will do Bonderman some good.

Never seemed the same after that blood clot issue he had a couple of years ago (before the procedure I remember him at 95 MPH consistently; since then he's been more 89-91)..Truth is he was never really all that effective even when he threw harder but you're right, I can't see going into the season with what we have now..If he's the best left on the board & the price is right, why not I guess..What I wanna know is what the hell was the plan B when Cliff Lee spurned NY?? I mean I can't believe there was none..It's crazy..We did nothing to keep pace with the Red Sox here..

VDesai -- I read in the paper that the Yankees weren't all that interested in Balfour mainly because he's a type A FA which would require us to surrender a draft pick to Tampa -- the Yankees supposedly don't wanna relinquish a pick for him..Same goes for Rafael Soriano -- also a type A - not only do the Yanks not wanna give up a pick for him they also don't wanna pay this guy closer money to set up for Mo..

at this point i'm almost tempted to see if Mussina will consider making a comeback for 1 year.

ur right, i can't believe we had no plan B options in place if we missed out on Cliff Lee... that's simply inexcusable... when i see guys like Jon Garland sign for 1 year $5M i can't believe we didn't even try to bring in a guy like that.

I think Manny Delcarmen's still out there -- he'd be a no compensation FA signing -- only 29 years old, quality middle man, throws pretty hard, steal him away from Boston?? No idea what kinda money he's looking for..

Not for anything but they're stupid for letting Chad Gaudin go too btw -- just reading that he signed a minor league deal with the Nats...We couldn't have matched that?? This guy's superior to Mitre, I'm sorry..I can see not bringing Ace back off injury but Gaudin I thought was decent in that role and we could've kept him for peanuts..Dude had pretty good stuff for what he was..

I'd actually give Cleveland a call about Fausto Carmona..I actually wanted this guy last year at the deadline (didn't even know if he was for sale but I was calling for Cash to call up and inquire)..The Indians might be a team in transition right from the beginning this coming season -- maybe they look to cut payroll and restock with young players right from the start..Probably just a pipedream (hard to see Cleveland waive the white flag before the season even began I guess) but Carmona definitely would be a nice front-of-the-rotation starter we might be able to get via trade at some point..He is coming off a pretty bad year for him but he's young and still quality...If we could somehow get Carmona and reliever Chris Perez from the Indians without giving up Montero that'd be nice..Could we get him for something built around Brackman, Brandon Laird, Nova, etc. ??? Not sure if that'd be possible but those two in a package together could go a long way in suring up the rotation and the pen..

i think CLE will want a lot for Carmona, probably more than the Yankees will be willing to give up.

as for Delcarmen, i read the Sux traded him to the Rockies for a minor league prospect a few months ago.

Wow. No kidding..My bad. Well that's another semi-decent reliever off the table..Not a lot of options left out there..I wonder if the Yanks already made up some 2nd place T-shirts for next year..Pathetic off-season bro. No way around it.
