don't count on it... the Royals always ask for the moon anytime they talk trade w/us... they'll want at least 3 or 4 of our top prospects including Jesus Montero... there's no way Cashman would make that trade especially w/Grienke's social anxiety disorder issues hanging over his head... if we were talking someone like Tim Lincecum or someone of that ilk, then i could see it... but i don't think the Yanks will bite on Grienke... not that i don't think he's awesome... i've always wanted us to make a play for him, but the Royals' asking price will be prohibitive.

i have no idea who else is available that we'd even want at this point... it's so late in the process... Lee really screwed us.

If Pettitte doesn't come back, we're really screwed.

He turned down an extra 2 years and basically 60 mil. Its not really a smart decision from any standpoint, but anyone who doesn't want to pitch in NY that badly probably would've flopped here.

This is not "panic" mode guys. They do need Burnett to bounce back in a big way but the Yankees still have a lot of talent.

If I'm the Yanks I absolutely go ahead and bolster my bullpen. Sign Guerrier, Wood and Fuentes if you have to.

We do need Pettitte back in a big way- thats certain. I think they may need to think about Joba as a starter again as well.

Should the Yanks make a play for Brandon Webb and/or Eric Bedard?

"not really a smart decision from any standpoint"...yeah other than the standpoint of being happy where you work. LOL. he's still making $120 million, which is probably more than everyone contributing on this board will make combined in their lifetime. (except briggs and his stock pickers). can't fault a guy for going where he wants to pitch and not just being a mercenary. leaving $20 million on the table when you're already agreeing to 6x that amount is what it is. it's like taking a job in NYC for 80k b/c you want to work in NYC versus moving to charlotte and getting paid 100k. yea you're leaving 20k on the table but you want to be in NYC.

in some people's minds, happiness > aggregate money earned in a lifetime.

Wow, I guess Ivan Nova and other prospects are just not ever going to crack the rotation.

Yanks are my fav. baseball team no doubt but at some point all the winning kind of gets dull with mercernary starphuck players. Yanks core came from minors and Im good with that. Yeah, I like to win every year but its also fun to root for the rookies and behold rookie sensations when they emerge.

I know Yankees are a different animal and the pressure to perform is huge and not for all players.

Yeah I wanted Cliff lee, but the era of 37-8-9 year old pitchers succeeding is rare. YOu'll have Cliff, AJ and CC all falling apart at some point.

Maybe we also wanted to raise the price on Lee so the Rangers have to pay up also.

Every year there are yankee killers because most years we are in the hunt.

Lee is no dummy and knows he can't pitch for all 7 years. If he can, there will be money for him. Yanks are a good place because if you get hurt they let you heal. They protect their investments.

He joins a Phillie staff that maybe the best of all time.

Competition is good and as a fan of the sport Im rooting against the Phillies but will follow this team a bit to see how it progresses.

Don't worry about the Yankees. If Ivan Nova goes 15-10 its a big story.

In American league east Tampa drops but Boston comes back. Toronto has to be decent one of these days.

I hate the bigger than NFL cowboys. I dont' want the Yankees to become too much like that. Its not our god given right to win all the time.

I hear ya but I think we needed Cliff Lee next year and the Yankees would buy some other free agent pitchers if Lee and CC were falling apart. So they might have been our #s 4 and 5 pitchers in 5 years. (Note AJ already has fallen apart though!)

They are an amazing franchise and spend an amazing amount of money.

I know Yanks prefer to buy and pay for proven talent on the mound. Its the pressure position but in the non Roid Era I would hope they are to consider the age of these guys.

Funny how so much money can allow for them to focus on "next year" and not beyond.

Papers read "Lee STIFFS Yanks". Its not like all players want NY. HE had a good time in Philly and his wife must have been happy there. These guys are gone half the time and even when they are home they are miles awway. Wife and kids have to be settled. PHucker gonna still make a kings ransom playing a game he loves!

Guess it will be that much sweeter if we make it to the world series and beat them.

He won't be there forever. He's leaving a small fortune on the table

i wonder if the idiots that heckled & poured beer on his wife during the playoffs had anything to do with this decision.

hey, look on the bright side guys, Chien Ming Wang was non tendered by the Nats... he's still living in Ft. Lee, NJ so who knows he might be Cashman's "big" acquisition this summer.

Everyone is talking like Cliff Lee would want to be pitching when he's 39... not everyone whores themselves out to the nth degree. He put in his dues, is going to bank some serious cash, be part of what will become the best rotation ever assembled, and then ride off into the sunset. Good for him. Fuck Philly

i'd love to go after brandon webb. i understand you need some patience with him since he's coming off major should surgery but he's a command guy and doesn't rely on a power-arm. i think his sinkerball fits in nicely in the bronx.

I think they leak this to press to make sure yanks have to overcome this with mo money and helps create a market. Yanks set the price.

Im sure Mrs. Cliff lee understands Phillie fans are not exactly the most polite either.
