4 years $60M... that should be their final offer.

agree that 3/$45 mil is more than fair. DJ is a 36 yr old SS coming off the worst yr of his career. that contract puts him atop the highest paid SS in the league.

disagree about DJ's career #'s... i mean, he's going to be the fastest to 3,000 hits and is possible he is the all-time hit king when all is said and done.

DJ has benefited but yanks have benefited from having him as the face of the franchise. he's the good looking SS hitting at the top of the order who fans love. he plays every day (unlike rivera and posada). everyone has made money off of this, yanks and jeter. hopefully the egos can be pushed aside and we can get something done here.

if its a 4 year deal, there is a pretty good chance jeter is 3rd or 4th all-time on the hits list at the end of the contract.

Having a very high hit total is a function of
(a) being a very good singles hitter;
(b) getting a lot of at bats by hitting at the top of a powerful lineup for so many years and also by not getting many walks.

Only point (a) has anything to do with hitting ability. (Point (b) shows the confounding factors that all happen to be in Jeter's favor.) No scout would just look at the raw number of hits to evaluate a player. In fact, there's no reason to look at all at that stat when you have better stats available. Other stats give a far more complete evaluation of a players' offensive impact--I always advocate looking at OPS and RC27. When you look at these stats, Jeter still has had a very good career but not as amazing as his reputation would suggest. The career is in the past and he's been generously rewarded for it anyway, though. It's clear that the Yankees' offer is taking his earlier career performance into account although I'm not at all convinced that from a winning perspective it's smart to.

2 years $30M for Mo... 1 down, 3 to go... Let's get Jeter & Andy P resigned & get Cliff Lee in the fold.

wouldn't mind signing a guy like Ty Wigginton to be our super sub utility guy either... dude is a good hitter & can play multiple positions & has performed well in NY in the past.

Aceves & Moseley non tendered... too bad Aceves couldn't stick around, he was a valuable arm outta the pen when healthy... 3 months of rehab i guess scared the Yankees away.

yo, cashman's a psycho:

Cashman’s alter ego makes it 22 stories and tells the tale
Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 03, 2010 Print This Post | Email This Post

The practice run is over for Brian Cashman. This morning, the Yankees general manager was in Stamford for an early run through of Sunday’s Heights & Lights rappel down the 22-story Landmark Building. The hair Cashman wore this morning was a wig. Cashman called it his alter ego.

Yankees discussed trading for Russell Martin

The Yankees and Dodgers talked about a trade that would have sent Russell Martin to New York in exchange for Francisco Cervelli, going so far as to exchange medical information on Martin, The New York Times reported Thursday.

But those talks, which heated up on Wednesday, stalled out when the Yankees had concerns about Martin's health.

As Michael S. Schmidt wrote:

The Yankees have been interested in Martin for some time but have had concerns about his health. Martin, 27, was an All-Star in 2007 and 2008 but did not play after Aug. 3 last season because of a right hip fracture.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers were concerned that if they went to arbitration with Martin, and kept him, he would receive an increase over the $5 million he was paid in 2010. Cervelli, who made a little over $400,000 in 2010, would cost Los Angeles much less.

The Dodgers and the Yankees went so far as to exchange medical files on Martin, but the Yankees had too many concerns about Martin's health and told the Dodgers they would not go ahead with the trade.

The Dodgers, who had also tried to trade Martin to other teams, instead decided Thursday night not to tender him a contract, and he became a free agent.

The Yankees' current plan is to have Jesus Montero, Cervelli and Austin Romine in camp competing to prove they should be the catcher, with Jorge Posada preparing as a catcher but more likely starting the year as a designated hitter.

Here's what Brian Cashman said recently on the YES Network:

"We are not handing the jobs to anybody. They have to be earned. These players have put themselves in the position to get a good, strong look. If there's another opportunity out there that maybe allows us to not put all our eggs in one basket that makes sense, then we might pursue that as well. We do believe we have catchers that are ready to battle, but they're going to have to do the work."

Thats weird...I would've kept Aceves. He was a very valuable pitcher with us. We're not that deep in the bullpen.

Aceves fractured his clavicle in some biking accident so the Yankees cut bait... i guess they didn't wanna wait on his subsequent rehab & probably weren't all that pleased he hurt himself biking when he had just gotten off an injury riddled season & was expected to be working hard to get healthy again for next season... his rehab was estimated to take at least 3 more months after 6 weeks of rest, which would have cut into pitchers & catchers workouts in February

Deal imminent: Derek Jeter, New York Yankees [deal worth between $45-51 million]

Brian Cashman's game of chicken with Derek Jeter looks like it's coming to an end. Eleven days after the Yankees' GM told the captain to find a better offer, the two sides are expected to reach a deal Saturday.

Well that is overpaying but at least it's not 100 mil like Jeter wanted.

George Steinbrenner not voted into the HOF... that's BS!... he did more for the game of baseball than any other owner in the sports' history... more of the typical anti-Yankee bias rearing its ugly head.

Werth is gonna have had time being worth that kind of money. Carl Crawford is gonna gonna get some ridiculous cash that I wouldn't want to give up for him. Yanks need to get Lee locked up and then start adding to the pen.

If the Yankees sign Crawford to an enormous long term deal, I'll be pissed. Give Lee 4 or 5 years at most too. Both of those guys are getting too old for my liking.

we don't need Crawford at the money it's gonna take to sign him... we need pitching help first & foremost... get Lee signed & address the setup man issue.

Jeter & the Yankees reached an agreement on a 4 year deal worth up to 65 mil. We're gonna have the oldest, slowest left side of the infield in a year or 2.
News: The fourth year in Jeter's new contract is actually a player option, Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports.
Spin: The fourth year adds a layer of complexity to this whole thing, but the Cliffs Notes version goes like this: the first three years are worth $51 million. If Jeter exercises the fourth-year option, the deal increases in value to somewhere between $56 million and $65 million, depending on certain performance bonuses.

Sux got Carl Crawford inked to a 7 year deal.
Yanks make official offer for 6 years $141M to Cliff Lee.
