Winn has been released cuz he couldn't even be a backup OFer for us, & Nick has been putrid all season & is now on the DL... having your sights set on longterm solutions doesn't mean you make bad decisions for short term solutions & be absolved of accountability... & i don't say this as an I Told You So either because i had no problem with the Nick Johnson signing, but that was only when i still thought Damon would be re-signed... when that didn't happen & we saw Nick be Nick as usual getting injured everytime he sneezed, it's proven to be a bad mistake.
damon turned us down. that's not our fault.
Cashman & Boras were at an impasse but Cashman did not exactly make it a priority to get Damon back in pinstripes this offseason, that much is clear... a 2 year $14M offer was the only offer we made... Boras hedged on that offer thinking he could get more elsewhere... instead of playing Boras' waiting game, Cashman went ahead & signed Nick Johnson to a 1 year $6M deal to prove some kind of point that he could land a #2 hitter for that level money... he was wrong... Nick Johnson has been a trainwreck this season... Damon had maintained all through the offseason that he wants to stay in NY but wasn't willing to sign a lowball offer after the season he had had... i don't blame him... he was a key reason why the Yankees won a championship last season, put up very good numbers & this was his final chance to land a big contract.
we spent the entire summer haggling with one of our best players over contract negotiations & lost him to another team, & ended up spending about $30M on players that can't hold Johnny Damon's jockstrap, 2 of which have been on the DL for most of the season & another that's already been waived... there's logic for ya.
when we traded for Curtis Granderson i had high hopes, but he hasn't lived up to the trade, that much is clear... he's still young enough & has enough talent to make that deal worthwhile someday, but right now you'd have to say the Tigers got the much better end of that deal... & sorry but Nick Johnson over Johnny Damon as our DH has been a disaster.
