looks like Hughes has won the #5 starter's role... now can we please lay to rest the whole Joba as a starter experiment & leave him in the bullpen where he belongs so he can grow into his role & stop jerking this kid around?

Joba may still eventually become a starter. I'm not so sure they see him as the heir apparent to Mo. Once Mo goes, you can be sure we'll take a long look at the free agent / trade market and look to buy the best out there. They will continue to explore getting Joba into the rotation. It seems like it may not be this year, but when Pettite retires for good at the end of this year, we will be back to considering both Joba and Hughes for the rotation...

joba's is too emotional. and it's TBD if he can ever get back to 98 mph like he did 3 years ago. i always thought hughes could be mo's heir apparent b/c they share the same demeanor.

tms - vazquez pitched pretty good yesterday for the club - i know youve been down on him but maybe this second stint and some key guys around him like cc and aj have put him in a better postion to win some games this year without feeling the pressure of being the 'it' guy:

Yankees on the mound: Taking the ball for his fourth spring start, Javier Vazquez faced the minimum through the first five frames, limiting Washington to a total of four hits over six-plus innings. Vazquez started the seventh by allowing a single on his 77th pitch and was relieved by Damaso Marte, who allowed the inherited runner to score on a double.

when or if Andy retires, we'll go hard after Cliff Lee this summer & Hughes will be higher up in the depth chart when considering other options... we need to let go of this idea of trying to force Joba into being a starter.

bro, it's not ST vs the Nationals or the regular season that i'm worried about w/Javy, it's the postseason & in big must win game situations vs the Red Sox, Rays, Angels, Tigers, etc.... we'll see if he proves me wrong about him, i hope he does.

Vazquez is a good pitcher. very talented. supposedly he was hurt during his short stay a few years back. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not as much pressure this time, too.

Aahh...no mas on the habla regarding who we didn't get or sign. I'll bet you a night of drinking that Vazquez has a better record than Chapman by mid-season AND that we don't miss Melky's dancing while injured ass one bit.

regular season records don't concern me dude... it's the post season that concerns me when it comes to Javy V... ask me who i think would be a better weapon to have going into a short series w/a top AL team like the M's, Red Sox, Tigers, etc. & i'll take Chapman everytime... u have options w/a guy like that on your team, either use him as a starter, long relief or as a dominant lefty situational guy to get a tough out... & it wouldn't have cost us prospects to get him either & less money invested in this year's salary.

Define implode...if he has one bad outing in the playoffs that is either preceeded or followed by a good / great outing, then I don't think that's different than any other team's 3rd/ 4th starter...

Define implode...if he has one bad outing in the playoffs that is either preceeded or followed by a good / great outing, then I don't think that's different than any other team's 3rd/ 4th starter...

dude has a career ERA in postseason play in the 10's dude... that's not just 1 bad game he's pitched that is skewing that average either.

in 3 different postseason series (all against AL competition), he's pitched to 9.00, 9.95 & 12.46 ERA's respectively in each, a total of 15.2 innings over 4 appearances, 2 of which were starts, where he's given up 24 hits & 18 earned runs with a whopping 2.17 WHIP!!!... that's a scary trend to say the least, i don't care who you're talking about... even Denny Neagle pitched to much better numbers than that in postseason play.

Phillies' rightfielder Jayson Werth will be one of the hottest commodities on the free agent market next year, and the Yankees might have an ace in the hole if they choose to pursue him. As if they need any more help, Joel Sherman of The New York Post notes that Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson - a special advisor for the Yanks - has a longstanding relationship with Werth's family.

Jackson became good friends with Werth's stepfather Dennis when the two patrolled the Yankees' outfield in the late-70's/early-80's, and he also played with Dick Schofield during his Angels years, who is Jayson's uncle (his mother's brother, to be specific). Sherman says that Jackson and Werth had lunch together before the two teams played yesterday, and then were spotted on the field chatting before first pitch. The commissioner's office frowns upon members of different organizations interacting like that, but Sherman says it happens all the time and the league would have to be able to illustrate tampering to act in any way.

GM Brian Cashman said he didn't know of the meeting and was unaware of Jackson's relationship with Werth's family, but history has shown that he's not above bringing the heat to recruit big free agents. Last offseason he brought Jackson along to a key meeting during their courtship of CC Sabathia.

Werth, 31 in May, finally started to deliver on some of the promise that landed him on Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects List four times from 1999 to 2003. A career .265/.360/.467 hitter in close to 2,300 big league plate appearances, Werth has hit .276/.376/.494 since arriving in Philadelphia during the 2007 season. His power has improved every year since then, topping out at 36 bombs last year, and he's a top notch defender in all three outfield spots according to UZR. Werth will earn $7MM this season as part of the two-year deal he signed last January.
