Yeah $3.3 million bucks for Nady pending the physical. For that amount of money, I would've been interested in keeping Nady around. If he's healthy, the Cubs got themselves a pretty good player. If he's all the way back he's a pretty good outfielder that could hit 30 HRs in that ballpark...Reading this morning that Ben Sheets just signed with the As for 1 yr., $10 million with another $2 million in "performance incentives." Man that's a lot more than I thought he'd get - I remember reading that he didn't even look that good in the recent audition he held in front of several teams' scouts. I remember reading a scout saying he really looked tired in the 3rd of 3 simulated 3-innings & looked mediocre overall. Hey, gotta give he and his agent some credit -- he got himself a good deal, considering he missed the whole season last year (he got a deal similar to what Andy Pettitte got and Andy pitched his ass off pretty much for 2 straight years, esp. last season). When he's right, this guy's a damn good pitcher. An ace. Good luck to him...Also reading that Jon Garland signed with San Diego -- 1 yr., $5.3 million.
I still say we should go get Mike MacDougal for the bullpen. Not only would he give us a reliable late-inning power arm that gets groundballs & keeps the ball in the park (great in terms of thinking about what type of pitchers we could use in this new Yankee Stadium) but he has a lot of experience closing games and would be excellent insurance in case something ever happened to Mo. Plus he'd give us some flexibility to start either Hughes or Joba and give either guy a longer leash as a starter if that's the route they intend on taking (if it were up to me, Hughes would start and I'd leave Joba in the pen - you know they won't do that though. Even more of a reason why I find MacDougal intriguing). I think MacDougal makes a ton of sense for us - we're a veteran team that's built to win now and win it all. This veteran reliever could only help the cause and give us some flexibility. You figure they had to have at least discussed him internally by now...Maybe he just wants too much money and/or wants to remain a closer (he did save 20 out of 21 for the Nats last year). If his asking price isn't too high, I think he's a no-brainer for us...
