I wouldn't be surprised only if we hadn't cleared some capspace. That 8 mil was all his , I believe. But, of course, we don't really know.What he took was not a team friendly deal. He is not a starter. Shamet and Alvarado took team friendly deals.

This makes me sad but the non emotional take in me says this contract was not a wise one for us to give. Mitch played like 12mpg in the playoffs for us. Hard to replace what he does but he’s not going to sink the ship. It hurts to picture him getting booed though.

Looking at the cap, Knicks might have only been able to offer 6 million per if they wanted to stay under the cap- and that's with bringing in both picks on regular minimum contracts.

Y2 (2027–28): $6,920,560 + $553,645 = $7,474,205

Y3 (2028–29): $7,474,205 + $553,645 = $8,027,850

Y4 (2029–30): $8,027,850 + $553,645 = $8,581,495

Total: ~$31,004,110 over 4 years.

True, it's not 8 it's 7. It would still be waay more than 4.5 Shamet got. And Shamet was just as important off the bench, probably contributed even more

And Jordan Clarkson! Go back and rewatch Game 4 vs. Atlanta. Knicks were on the ropes in the series and Brunson had to leave the game with an injury. Jose and Clarkson come in to steady the ship and the rest is history.

You can also plug and play Shamet vs having to use Mitch Rob in only specific circumstances. Mitch was probably upset that even though the Knicks could have paid him more than anyone else, the organization decided to keep their powder dry. It's understandable from both sides. Still Mitch was able to secure one of the more lucrative back up Center contracts in the league. Kudos to Leon- guys who play in NY get paid!

Probably right. It always made sense just from a foul limit perspective to have Robinson start. How does that sit with Queta though?

The point is taken that we're still s contending team without him on the floor, and in fact were limited in the minutes we got out of him...but yeah, I agree with you. They were impactful minutes, and opposing teams still had to strategize around him.

The same people brushing off this loss are going to be the same ones complaining about rebounding and an open paint next year, and the irony is they'll never concede Mitch's loss has anything to do with it.

But onto the next either way. Will feel much better once Leon settles on (and gets) his target.

I'm bummed about the loss too, however, when I really think about it logically instead of emotionally, I think the reality is there is a pretty good chance that Mitch does not play out his contract. He has serious, repeated injuries to his ankles, and that he has a much higher probability of a career ending injury in the next couple of years than most other players. I hope it doesn't happen, but FO can't operate on hope. I think there's more stuff behind the scenes that we're not privy too. And kudos to FO for not airing dirty laundry. I think the broken pinky was a thing. I think not being able to improve, nay, to actually REGRESS, at free throws during his 8 years here and being taken out of the game at will with hacking, I think all these things contribute.
What I don't understand is not retaining Huk, if you know you're losing Mitch. At least have SOME big body on the bench. But I'll wait for all the chips to fall.

2nd apron is about the next 3-4 seasons, not just now.

Mitch has value of a kind. He's a provisional player we managed to squeeze the juice out of with load management this year.

All it takes is for the Celtics to mismanage him even for a few games and he can miss half a season just like that. This is Mitch's history.

I am literally waiting to see Mazulla misread Mitch's capacity and play him 30 minutes in consecutive games. See what happens then.

For 10-15 minutes a game, his impact was real, but this overall value in terms of salary is questionable.

He was not worth going over the 2nd considering what it would do to the FO's future roster flexibility.

This is not about Mitch. It is about the 2nd apron. He's not a starter, he's a bench player.

Our FO will work it out with our coaches.

100% I don't know if ppl realize, I know it took me weeks for it to sink in. We just won a title. So that puts us into a different category of teams for the first time like ever. The one where smart guys take paycuts to be here. It's a legit chance to chase a ring. This is not a team where you get " paid" there are 29 other teams for that. Yes, unfortunate for Mitch to have to make that decision this particular year. But also very fortunate for him to have his value at an all time high level. So good for him, he got his payday.

Obviously it sucks losing his defense and rebounding. But I am pretty sure that a bench center can be had for a lot less. Probably at half the salary that Mitch got. Especially for a Championship team.
