Right now it's after the trade deadline and before the draft. At draft time they could do a trde with the Knicks just as any other team could do a trade at that time - that exchange could satisfy both teams.

He literally has done this each the last 3 years. Did he he give up those years also?

They gave up two starters for him, (Dinwiddie and Finny-Smith) which would set them back further.
But Kyrie said he at peace with the trade and sees it long term. My sense is Dallas agreed to a long term deal and money talks. I’d guess he gets traded at some point perhaps when Luka indicates he wants out.

Does one take PhilC or Kyrie at his word? Not really. Kyrie can and frequently changes his mind. Something tells me he has a mulit year offer in his back pocket and i’d have to guess Lakers would only want to pair him with Lebron contract length.

They salary dumped Finney Smith which wasn’t a good contract to begin with and Dinwiddie is on the last year of his deal. The mavs didn’t give up much at all for Kyrie and can move on. They are better off without Kyrie and his never ending baggage. Maybe they sign Elf? He did single-handedly get us the 4th seed

By all measures, Finney Smith contract is very good value, not a dump. Don't know if he is an elite starter but he is far from making vet starter money; he is making just above the MLE at $13M this year.

Helps to clarify the that Mavs did not pay a huge price but Dinwiddie and Finny smith were two starters for them and given how thin the asset base is for them, it was not disposable assets. They were important pieces. They did make conf. finals last year. The move for Kyrie was a gamble. He might bolt. After all, its Kyrie and he does change his mind. But we can't pretend we know whats in his mind or priorities.
Flaky as he is, he does understand his endorsement money is gone and his philanthropic goals require money to accomplish.
Thus, if his outside PASSIONS are more important than championship PASSIONS and Mavs will give him a longer term deal for more money, perhaps that factors in.
So I very much see a path where he does return. Is it a good idea? Hell if know or care. Its the Mavs. I can give a rat's ass.
