The problem is this. CP is going to opt out. I see no reason the Suns don’t give him a 3yr / $90 million contract, which actually reduces the Suns cap hit next year. The second and third year is going to be tough for them, but with Paul, they would have a 3 year window to win a championship. They groomed Payne, so I think they resign him for anything up to the MLE. So are you really going to sign Payne to a 3-4 year contract at $10 mill plus per year? That’s a big risk. I like the kid, but I think he wants to stay in Phoenix and the Suns are going to give him a decent offer to stay, so essentially you have to overpay him to leave and hope he blossoms. It’s a 50/50 gamble and we would still have to resign Rose. The upside though is he probably would be cheaper than Ball and might turn out to be just as good. I trust the Knicks talent scouts to determine if he is worth it.

Here's the thing - we'd be signing Payne in the hopes that he is Chris Childs, not Chris Paul. We just need a serviceable, steady upgrade to Elfrid Payton.

It's ironic looking at their stats - I mean, yea, Payne has hardly played - they're the same age. But Payne has shot almost as many 3's as Payton, and the percentage is just so much higher- .372 vs .289.

Payne looks good with Ayton, Bridges, Booker, etc. No doubt the effect of CP3 as mentor/role model etc elevates his game.
for all we know Chris Dugan might have excelled in this role.

In the indelible memory of Howard Eisley’s tenure here perhaps its ok to pause with caution and understand when a good role player is elevated to starter its not always a transferable situation. Sometimes players on other benches when given an opportunity shine when given the chance.

Idea is to take an undervalued asset and polish it up. Payne might be ready. Or he might be just OK/Paytonish.

Well, what do we think the rotation will be like next year? We still have Quickley and Vildoza on contract - and I presume Rose will be back. What role would we sell to Payne?

If you look at the formula over the 2nd half of the season, are we looking for a 15-25 minute starter (mild upgrade from Payton) OR are we looking for a game changer floor general that will transform the way the team plays?

I expect Rose and Quickley to share the backcourt bench rotation and play about 24-26 mpg each. Vildoza will be a 3rd string PG for next year i expect. So we need a starter who can play 28-30 mpg at minimum.

I was listening to Sam Mitchell on NBA Radio today describe how when he was an assistant at Univ. of Memphis Payne worked extensively with Penny Hardaway to get in shape and help him get back in the league. Talked about how hard Penny worked him and we're seeing the results now. As I'm warming to the idea of signing him I'm starting to think the chances are slim that he'll leave Phoenix or that he'll command a lot more money than we should consider offering him.
