To me, it is really obvious the negative effect that Melo has on this team. For that reason - he has to go. The negatives are - ball stopping, bad defense, uninspired play and that stupid smile he has when he misses shots or messes up. The man is not a leader that you build around. He never will be. He is best as 3rd wheel. No pressure, just go do his thing.
It would be SO unwise to have him around this YOUNG team for another minute, let alone a season or two.
I like that NY is holding out for as much as possible, if that really the case. They should, getting him cost many assets at the time.
If a trade does not happen, he should be informed that he needs to stay home and not report to camp or to the team. Pay him to stay away. Yes, I feel that strongly about his negative effect.
