Not to Wiggins! If your choice is to be a generational MVP talent, or just another HOFer wow... I could work with that.
I get what you're saying (and I agree) but like mreinman said, it was not positive and a shot at Melo.
Yeah, only desperate Knicks fans would look at that title and think it was a compliment to Melo.
I'm not the biggest Melo fan but Wiggins has a long way to go just to get to Melo's level. Next MVP or Isiah Rider might have been a more accurate title.
Its is interesting that they would choose Melo as Wiggins plays nothing like Melo. The only thing I could see them trying to compare is that they feel Melo underachieved. Melo and Lebron were viewed and players that were going to take over the league Magic Johnson and Larry Bird style.
So they are most likely saying can Wiggins reach his full potential and be an MVP o& arguably best player in the NBA or underachieve. Since they don't feel he will be a bust who turns into a role player or out of the league. They must be saying Melo level is that step below that. Since Melo hasn't won any MVPs or anything its a fair viewpoint.
They would not say the next Patrick Ewing. Ewing never won an MVP or a ring. That is because players like Ewing are great regardless of rings or mvp's. They gave it their all every night.
Melo is that guy who coming into the NBA and really early you thought that this guy will just be off the charts however he never lived up to what he could be because of a mental block that made him care (or believe) way too much about HIS shots and buckets and not always about defense and/or passing. Basically a selfish player.
Barkley and Malone won mvp's late but never rings and of course even before their rings, no one would have made such a comparison with them.
So basically your saying they are only using Melo's name to reference a player who underachieved due to selfishness and inability to make others better or be an all around player.
pretty much ... however, he did make others better, just not on the level that was expected of a player who is that talented and has such high expectations.
Has Wiggins showns signs of this though? Or are they just throwing Melo under the bus to feed there viewpoint on what a basketball player should be?
Wiggins has shown nothing to warrant being in such a conversation comparing him to a highly esteemed player.
Who do you think will become the Alpha? Wiggins or Towns?
They are also wasting talents like Deing and Muhammad
guard is usually the alpha but he will need to cater to towns or else he will be killed since if he plays inefficiently and does not have good advanced stats he will not be considered good. That is the way it is now and for good reason.
Wiggins better learn how to pass if wants to be respected or he can just be another afflalo
so here is what phil is thinking ....
