Knicks: Door open for them to acquire Dampier Tuesday, July 20, 2004 BY DAVE D'ALESSANDRO Star-Ledger Staff
The final barrier preventing the Knicks from acquiring Golden State's Erick Dampier could be lifted today, as Atlanta is expected to pass on making a substantial offer to the free-agent center -- or any offer at all, according to an Eastern Conference executive familiar with the Hawks' game plan.
The Hawks, the only team with abundant cap space left in this free-agent market, can offer Dampier more money than any other team, but they don't regard the 7-footer as a reliable building block, and are more likely to invest their bankroll in Memphis forward Stromile Swift.
That opens the door for the Knicks to complete a sign-and-trade acquisition with the Warriors for Dampier, though no agreement had been reached last night. The Knicks are offering Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington in the deal, which would enable them to pay Dampier $9 million in his first season.
Warriors GM Chris Mullin wouldn't tip his hand yesterday: "We talked to several other teams," he said, referring to Memphis and Indiana. "Nothing is imminent right now."
But Mullin, new on the job, has political ramifications to consider. Dampier is handled by Dan Fegan, one of the top agents in the game, and he favors his client landing in New York. Fegan already did Mullin a favor by having Dampier opt out of his contract, and he expects the GM to reciprocate by closing a deal with the Knicks -- otherwise, Fegan can make life miserable for the Warriors next summer, when two more clients, Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy, become free agents.
"He's certainly not setting Dampier up to play for somebody's midlevel exception," the executive said of Fegan, "or someone is going to be in serious trouble."
While Dampier could be a force in the East, he would represent the latest in a long line of mediocre Knicks players getting superstar contracts. Though Dampier had a career season last year (his 12.0 rebounds per game ranked fourth in the league), most GMs believe he was motivated by his opt-out opportunity, and more resembles the player who has averaged 8.9 points and 7.2 rebounds over his eight NBA seasons.
No plans have been made for Dampier to visit New York, a Knicks official said. Knicks president Isiah Thomas was home in Indianapolis yesterday, and was expected to return to New York later this week.
