good points all around. I think Islesfan and Briggs summed it up best. Dampier's upside of 12/12/3 for the next 4 years or so simply awesome... he's a good 2-way player and would an awesome fit. The downside is its tough to gage players that have spent 7 years on losing teams and have great seasons in contract years.

Rip made a good point though... 9mm seems awefully steep but w/ Camby getting 10mm, Kmart max, Foyal gets an insane 8mm-9mm, even guys like Doleac and Divac are getting solid paydays. Honestly I think 6 years 65mm is about market value for a 30 year old center coming off the year he had. If the deal's for Othella and Nazr its a no brainer to me.

Rip is BRIGGS? man, I gotta keep up.

Excellent two way player?! Well, I don't think he's that offensively polished. However, he seems to have a good enough feel to exploit teams if they leave him open. He's also big enough that he can manhandle those PFs masquerading as centers.

Interestingly, looking at the stats, Dampier actually had BETTER numbers against Western Conference teams than eastern conference teams.

check out this usenet scouting report on him from the 1996 draft:
http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/1996_draft/scout/c.html

Unlike many of these chumpy centers--- it seems like Dampier also has had a high FG%, meaning he doesn't take too many bad shots. (or conversely, he takes a lot of easy shots!)

STRANGELY, he put up some of his worst numbers against the Knicks--- however GS blew us out both games.

I don't care if Damps is a bench player for the final 3 yrs of a 7 year deal. By then, we will have used (or at least should have used) expiring contracts to obtain a star C in another deal anyway and Damps will still be a good backup (kind of like the role Penny has now). Just keep using expiring contracts to get stars. I'd like to have a roster with 8 very good players and the rest (7) being players we took back with bad contracts in order to get those eight players. You only need a strong 8 man rotation to win a championship. The remaining ones that fill the 15 man roster are irrelevant.

The more I think about it, the more excited I am about this Dampier deal. Not only are we getting (in theory) a better player, we're also opening up another roster spot for some experimental league-min-type players.

I hate grossly overpaying players who don't have a long history of proven production, but if the Knicks are going to do this, Isiah better have a couple more moves lined up. Adding Dampier to this lineup without further upgrades is a waste.

Rich, I really think this is the first of a few... I think this gets done tomorrow and then Zeke goes for Carter and a forward.

Golden State center Erick Dampier met with Atlanta Hawks general manager Billy Knight and new coach Mike Woodson on Monday in Salt Lake City, where the Hawks' summer league is playing.

According to David Aldridge, it is unlikely that Dampier would accept Atlanta's offer, which is approximately $1 million less per season than what the Knicks offered to him.

The Knicks have structured a sign-and-trade deal with the Warriors that would have Golden State sign Dampier to a six-year contract, starting at $9 million per season, and then trade him to New York for forwards Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington.

I don't see how he says no. The Knicks are offering him more money than Atlanta per year, and a chance to win.

He just turned 30 a few days ago, so I figure he'll give you 3 seasons of play near the level from last year.

Even if he is coasting, a guy that big and strong should still be an average to above-average C in the East.

Knicks now have to get Crawford. This helps Isiah, becuase he can negotiate knowing he can't give up Harrington or Mohammed. The Bulls have to lessen their demands, and I really don't see how Penny, Mutumbo, and Trybanski for Crawford and both their bad contracts doesn't work. They get immediate relief for next season with Mutumbo and Trybanski (over $5 million next year), and trade two bad contracts with three years left for one bad contract with two years left. That will be the biggest steal of all, keeping Frankd and KT while getting Dampier and Crawford.

Isola is reporting that there is no deal between the Knicks and Golden State. He has an attitude. I would like to see him look like a jerk:

Shaq v. Dampier head to head:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/ny-spknix203900242jul20,0,6511174.story?coll=ny-basketball-headlines

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, O'Neal shot 58.4 percent from the field and averaged 25.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 blocks. Dampier shot 39.8 percent with 7.8 points and 7.1 rebounds

Meanwhile, the long-running saga of Jamal Crawford and a possible trade to the Knicks could be drawing to a close. Reports in New York have Golden State agreeing to send center Erick Dampier to the Knicks for Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington.

Dampier is an unrestricted free agent and would have to agree to such a deal.

He is also negotiating with Atlanta, which has enough salary-cap room to sign him outright.

Harrington, who has one year left on his contract at $3.15 million, was included in the one combination the Bulls accepted - Harrington, Dikembe Mutombo, Shandon Anderson and Frank Williams for Crawford, Eddie Robinson and Jerome Williams.

If Harrington moves to Golden State, the chances of the Bulls and Knicks doing business would dwindle even further, as long as Bulls general manager John Paxson refuses to take Knicks guard Moochie Norris in any trade.

One deal that could appeal to the Bulls is Penny Hardaway and Cezary Trybanski for Crawford, Robinson and Williams. Hardaway has two years and $30.4 million remaining on his contract, but he would allow the Bulls to clear some salary-cap room in 2006.

If New York GM Isiah Thomas thought the Harrington, Mutombo, Anderson and Williams combo was too costly for the Knicks, he probably wouldn't green-light a Hardaway trade with the Bulls.

Crawford is a restricted free agent, which means the Bulls can match any offer he gets from another team. So far, the Knicks are the only team to show serious interest in the Bulls' leading scorer.

Knicks: Door open for them to acquire Dampier
Tuesday, July 20, 2004
BY DAVE D'ALESSANDRO
Star-Ledger Staff

The final barrier preventing the Knicks from acquiring Golden State's Erick Dampier could be lifted today, as Atlanta is expected to pass on making a substantial offer to the free-agent center -- or any offer at all, according to an Eastern Conference executive familiar with the Hawks' game plan.

The Hawks, the only team with abundant cap space left in this free-agent market, can offer Dampier more money than any other team, but they don't regard the 7-footer as a reliable building block, and are more likely to invest their bankroll in Memphis forward Stromile Swift.

That opens the door for the Knicks to complete a sign-and-trade acquisition with the Warriors for Dampier, though no agreement had been reached last night. The Knicks are offering Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington in the deal, which would enable them to pay Dampier $9 million in his first season.

Warriors GM Chris Mullin wouldn't tip his hand yesterday: "We talked to several other teams," he said, referring to Memphis and Indiana. "Nothing is imminent right now."

But Mullin, new on the job, has political ramifications to consider. Dampier is handled by Dan Fegan, one of the top agents in the game, and he favors his client landing in New York. Fegan already did Mullin a favor by having Dampier opt out of his contract, and he expects the GM to reciprocate by closing a deal with the Knicks -- otherwise, Fegan can make life miserable for the Warriors next summer, when two more clients, Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy, become free agents.

"He's certainly not setting Dampier up to play for somebody's midlevel exception," the executive said of Fegan, "or someone is going to be in serious trouble."

While Dampier could be a force in the East, he would represent the latest in a long line of mediocre Knicks players getting superstar contracts. Though Dampier had a career season last year (his 12.0 rebounds per game ranked fourth in the league), most GMs believe he was motivated by his opt-out opportunity, and more resembles the player who has averaged 8.9 points and 7.2 rebounds over his eight NBA seasons.

No plans have been made for Dampier to visit New York, a Knicks official said. Knicks president Isiah Thomas was home in Indianapolis yesterday, and was expected to return to New York later this week.

It's a concern. The mitigating factor is that it makes more sense to overpay for a starting C, like Dampier, than a back up PG, like Eisley, or a back up SF, like Anderson, or a back up PF, like Weatherpoon.

I think 6 years is excessive, but I really don't mind the money. Dampier appears to be in good shape and could be solid for a while, provided he gives the requisite effort. I just want to get this done...this certainly makes us better next year and leaves us with enough pawns. I don't think we can rule out Carter just yet.

BTW, did you guys read the mentions of Rodney White? He might be an interesting alternative to Crawford. I would only give him half the MLE though, and spend the other half on a backup big.

Some of the reports have Atlanta offering 1 million less per year over 6 years. I doubt they can squeeze a year 7 out of us. I've come to accept that 6 years 65 mil is ok.

when you see other guy's paydays its market value. Interesting issue w/ GS and the fact that Dampier has the same agent as Troy Murphy and Jason Richardson. This tells me GS will lean towards giving Dampier what he wants.
