On the flip side I prefer this to the years where the knicks go out of there way to hide who they like and it gets leaked 2 -3 days before the draft anyway.

Also people denying the possibility that Phil trades down are ignoring the fact that the one common theme of all Phil's trades is he gets picks back. Also the knicks have a D League team, and a coaching staff that consists of former development coaches from the Thunder. The knicks are a team primed for young talent.

Phil should be acting like he's interested in all these players that are projected to go top 10 so the teams that really want certain players will be nervous that the player they're interested in most might not make it to them and they'll try to trade up to get that player and then Phil can swoop in and get a really good trade offer for the #4 pick.

Given the way the NBA game is played today and the officiating rules - it totally favor superstar offensive talents. Given the #4 pick, the Knicks must do their diligent homework to see if they can identify if their is a kid available at 4 who they feel they can develop into a franchise player or consistent all-star talent going forward. If they identify one - let's not try to be too cute - just take him and start building from there. Melo can be a co-star until his contract expires. Hopefully, at some point, his head and game will age gracefully. If they can't identify that type of talent then I agree the prudent thing to do is to trade down and acquire multiple assets in this draft and 2016 - and hope to get a couple of key free agents. There's no need to repeat past mistakes and absorb any veteran contracts via trades. Unfortunately, we don't know their thinking or evaluations because we don't have access to their film sessions, private workouts or scouting. Rather than guessing at the names thrown out there, I just home they do their homework and take the smart approach.
Question - if they trade down and collect mid-level assets - they could develop into an Atlanta Hawks type model..a good consistent team that could possibly catch lightning and fall into a championship with a down year or injury from the star-laden teams (Sonics 1979, Pistons 2004). Would that satisfy the fan base and management?

I absolutely think that if Phil comes out of this draft with either a really good player at #4 or a trade down that gets him a good player and more assets whether those assets be more draft picks or a veteran player or both that the fan base kinda lets the so called bad trades he's made and whatever else he's done go away. I'm one of the guys that don't think he's done a horrible job so far cause i don't think the real job has started yet for him. People like to look at JR and Shump playing good in Cleveland was a bad move by Phil but those same people were saying before the trade that JR needs to go but he has no value so we'll never be able to trade him. The guy had no value at the time we traded him and neither did Tyson and i have no problem with either trade really. Do i wish we could of gotten more in either trade?? Absolutely i do but i'm glad they're both gone.

Either way, it has to be BPA! Trade suitors will still come knocking, if they don't have enough, we just groom the next superstar. Whether it be Mudiay, Winslow, WCS or PorZ

On a side note, say one of the top 3 slide to us at 4. would people still be open to trading down???

I think we have to draft the player but I might be wrong?

Pretty sure we have to draft the guy first, then trade him. If we select Mudiay, I'm basically going to be holding my breath and assume we're trading him all night.

Yes we absolutely have to make the pick before we can trade it. Whoever we draft we'll have no idea just how long that player will be a Knick.

My opinion. Many teams will miss on Kaminsky. He would simply wreck anyone not named Towns or Okafor in workouts and hes getting unfairly judged because hes 22--just like Vucevic did when he slid to 16(and shouldve been top 3)

Do you really think they would say he had a horrible workout?? They're always gonna say the workout was good no matter how that player did but i do think Kaminsky will bring a good workout to every team he worksout for which most player do well in their workouts.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely for him to drop further than 13. Hell, the Pacers might even grab him at 11. I was holding hope that maybe we could begin the process of trading down and possibly grab the Celtics' picks at 16 and 28 (along with more assets) to get him. But I'm definitely in your boat and prefer Kaminsky and assets than in keeping our current pick.

They were not compelled to praise him either or issue any comment. But they did. Do you think there would be any other prospect at 13 that is currently better than Kaminsky?

Trading down might be the best move for us, since picks 4-10 all come with similar risk levels and potential ceiling growth. All these guys might be NBA stars, but I can't say any of them is guaranteed to be an NBA super star. Every year, we say the draft is the best ever....or the deepest ever. Then 3 yrs later, we say it was the weakest ever.

Trade #4 and get multiple picks....Then use free agency to build the team core. And hope 1 of your draft pick(s) turn into a diamond. Thats all we can control at this point.

Any reasons why?

Will it depend on who becomes their coach?

Who would Denver be desperate to get in the draft, or give up?

Think Phil likes anything they have?

Picking at 4 is almost a better way of getting two potential stars for the price of 1...Assuming the teams we trade with is willing to give up two picks.

Everybody below 4 are looking at this draft as a top 4 draft (except for knick fans).....So that 4th spot is more valuable to other teams looking for that 1 missing piece. Meanwhile, we are looking for multiple missing pieces.

Here are the next tier of players, with Porzingis (6) and Hezonja (7) pushing down players like Johnson, Kaminsky (who's outside the top 14 http://www.nbadraft.net/), Payne, etc...

Mudiay (4)
Winslow (5)
WCS (9)
Stanley Johnson (11)
Myles Turner (13)
Payne (14)
Kaminsky (15)
Grant (18)

All these guys have similar star potential. Some of us have favorites, but in reality, they are all very close in value. Since this next tier starts at 4, see who's willing to bite and give up multiple picks to move up. I think Phil mostlikely have multiple trade options on the table. Just depends on how the top 3 play out.

I wonder if there is any truth to the Hornets being willing to trade #9 for a team that absorbs Stephenson contract? I mean they have a 65 mil salary, Biyombo is a RFA who I could see them wanting to keep and Jordan is notoriously Cheap. If so maybe the Knicks could get a second lottery pick and not have to trade down?

If the knicks took Lance's contract and then Stretched both Lance's and Calderon's contracts they would still be around 25 - 26 mil in cap space and would have draft picks at #4 and #9. The only real risk would be Phil's pride if Calderon or Lance got their game together on another team while the knicks were paying them and a few mil more on the salary cap that is about to explode.

The algorithm gives and the algorithm takes away

Why would the Hornets even entertain giving up their pick? They could stretch Stephenson themselves and save $6 million of his salary this season. That is far more tenable than losing a pick as a small market lottery team. In all seriousness, who is signing there anyway? So, why stockpile cap space?

Trading down to get pick #7 and Ty Lawson for pick #4 and Jose Calderon and then selecting Kaminsky if hes there is about as stabilizing a move as we can make. What are the odds if we just take Mudiay that he is materially better than Ty Lawson anytime soon? Id put the odds as low. You add in Kamnisky and look at the value? Two starters or a starter and a 6th man. You still get a rookie you dont overuse cap(some but moving down in the draft 3 spots helps fray that as well) I think Ty is a good situation is closer to a 50% scorer than a 44%. Hia assist to TO ratio is excellent and he has been a 40% 3 point shooter. That team has been a train wreck. If we can provide stability and a position where Lawson only has to give 30 minutes--he should stay healthy and give us the penetrating PG we need for nearly FREE.

Have not been reading this thread that much because I'm already sold on Kaminsky as a player.

I totally overlooked this comment from Hornacek. There is good stuff here, mentioning specifics...not the "he looked impressive out there" type the Knicks would say.

You hear enough out of Hornacek to know the kind of drills he was put through and how he looked.

His footwork, something people were worried about during the college season, was specifically mentioned.

Mentioned his handle, too.

The shooting we already knew about, and he mentioned the step back shot we knew he was working on.

He a good guy to trade down for, but a GM with balls would not shy away from taking him earlier than some are placing him in the draft.

Guy has a track record of improvement and success, and unlike some in the draft, he has proven himself under fire and helped take Wisconsin to great heights.

I say again, seemingly for the zillionth time, I cannot understand the lack of "respect" he seems to get from some folks.

People say he's Christian Laetner--my response if he was --than we made a good pick at 4 or 7 or where ever we are. We are NOT 1-2-3. At 1 wed take Towns but that ship sailed.

If Kaminsky is Laetner albeit with a 3 ball game--hes going to average 20-23 points in the NBA because his eFG will be higher than Laetner's. You look at the other stats and I can see it--good passing solid rebounding very respectable defensive numbers. I think Kaminsky has some upside that Laetner did not have with his ball-handling his 3 point shot and well hes 2.5 inches taller. Two keys for Kaminsky getting his body weight to 245 and adding some explosion with it. A good trainer could have him there in 3-4 months time at his age. Why would fans not want to have a C-PF who can avg 20-22 points -8-9 rebounds 4-5 assists in his prime with solid D and good team play on their team? Its like the "Lets make a deal " mentality. Ill take whats behind curtain #4 Monty because that car doesnt look fast enough.
